All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

We haven't seen Gaston play yet, so we don't know for sure what position he will be playing. Being listed as a PF doesn't mean much. I would guess he will play PF next season and possibly move to center the year after. We NEED two centers after next season, so having both Gaston and Konate play there after this year would make perfect sense unless we get commitments from more guys who can play there. Gaston is plenty big/long enough to play the 5 and Pitino would probably idealy like a better shooter at the 4 (assuming Gaston isn't a shooter, but maybe he is). After next season if we have both Martin and Illikainen on the roster and no other center besides Konate, which is very possible, I'd bet my life savings (not saying much) that Gaston would play the 5 and I bet Pitino would be happy with that.

Him listed as a PF means more than people projecting him as a center without ever seeing him play, which is why I ask why do people just assume he is going to be center?

I understand it is a reasonable proposition. I also understand we will need another center by this time next year. I just don't think we really have a chance to begin with--even if we ignore the Konate signing.

That I will accept, if we don't land manyang, then yeah maybe look into moving Gaston to center, but Gaston shouldn't scare manyang off, and by all accounts nor should konate, if hr chooses elsewhere it would not be because of those 2 players

Other then the fact that Martin announced his desire to transfer, which prompted immediate interest on GopherHole, is there any evidence or rumors that we have a chance with Martin???

As has been mentioned numerous times, Richard had Martin ready to commit to Louisville when he was an assistant. Martin only chose Xavier after Richard took the head assistant job at Florida. So Richard has history with this kid.

Why would konate rule out manyang? We lose 2 centers next year, by your logic no center would wanna sign here if konate signs. Also manyang is older, so he'd likely to get more minutes over a redshirt freshman, manyyang starting and konate off the bench is a perfect situation for us and them, and after 2 years konate is the main center mentoring another center

Makes it tough to sign both Big Al and Manyang by bringing in Konate, would make us thin in the back court. Unless we "Crean" someone like Buggs off the roster
Of course that's all assuming Manyang even wants to come here. Probably shouldn't not recruit someone because you might get someone next year, sounds like a bad strategy

I might be wrong, but I think he actually did commit and ended up decommitting after Richard left. If I'm right, then I'd have to imagine their relationship is pretty damn good, which obviously bodes very well for us.

please let this anecdote be true

That's a fair point, but I mean Louisville signed like 10 very good bigs just in this class alone. Not completely out of the ordinary, also think king will be playing more of the 3 in the long run as a spot up shooter, which he is pretty good at

I could see that, you think King's quick enough on D to guard the wing? Suppose they could play a zone in those situations

Can't speak for everyone, but a combination of a few things make me think he will be playing the 5 after next season. Pitino has made it clear publicly that he likes his power forwards to be able to shoot and put the ball on the floor from the perimeter. Since we haven't seen Gaston play, we don't know for sure that he can't do that, but I don't remember him attempting any jumpers in any of his videos and people who have described his game haven't mentioned anything about shooting, so the assumption is that he isn't a stretch 4 like Pitino likes. He's also more than big, strong and long enough to play center and seems like a low block player, which would make him a better fit at the 5 than the 4 here. With Martin already here, if Illikainen commits I'd imagine those two will split time at the 4. We also currently have zero centers on the roster after next season, so with Martin and possibly Illikainen at the 4 and empty spots at the 5, it makes sense that Gaston will probably slide to the 5 after next season. Pretty logical if you break it down. We'll see what happens when he gets here though and what other commitments we get. Obviously Illikainen isn't a guarantee.

From what I have read, most people understand he will play the 4. Which is perfect for us. All we have is King right now, along with the freshman Martin. While I expect the transition to be fairly easy for Martin, I think it was a priority for us to recruit another 4-- especially one who is strong and can play D..

Konate signing should rule us out of the Manyang running. Which I am also fine with.

Again, our main priority should be getting another shooter. I hope its Xavier's Martin, but I won't hold my breath.

Does anyone know of any other rumblings regarding a shooter (outside Martin and Lofton). I know there was talk of that 6'5 guard who isn't very athletic but has the ability to shoot--however, I don't see him as being a savior for this team. We need someone who can really step up and fill Austin's shoes
The 6'5 guard/forward was Ryan Johnson and I believe he was supposed to visit this weekend but that visit was cancelled.

Looks like we won't/can't hear from Justin Martin until after he graduates. Ironically, it might be a good sign if we don't hear much about recruiting these next couple of weeks

Not sure the link of the video, but it was posted in the Gaston thread, it was the only video I watched but it showed him taking 3s, putting the ball on the floor and driving and throwing some nice passes, it was sorta why I'm not convinced he is a center.

For the way that pitino has played this far I don't think king can play the three. Look how much Austin had to handle to ball on the perimeter there is no way king can do that unless he vastly improves his ball handling and quickness.

If he was actually shooting threes in one of the videos, then my mistake. I watched a few and don't recall any. Are you sure it wasn't another player shooting them (not saying you're wrong, I'm just wondering)? Some of the videos posted showed highlights of the whole team.

Yeah, no way in hell he plays the 3 in my opinion. I'd be shocked if he plays there at all unless there are injuries or guys like Morris and McNeil are just playing terrible.

That's kinda what I am thinking

If Josh Martin's handles are as good as they appear in his highlights, I could see Martin and King playing together in the front court with someone like Mo at center. Between the two of them I think we could get by without a natural SF.

I honestly just don't think he'd get much playing time on an improved team, and he'd be more of speciality guy and maybe run zone while he is out there or something, he is liability on defense at any position to be frank, and with the way pitino likes to get out and run it would be nice to have a 4 to help get rebounds so the dre's can leak out and get into transition which was when we were at our best. Also let's not forget the other end of it, where king would be taller than most 3s who would have to guard him, he'd be matchup problem for other teams in that regard where at the 4 he isn't matchup problem for them on offense and is libiailty on defense regardless

Maybe I'm wrong, I'd try to find the video again but I'm on my phone, but I'm pretty sure it was him I saw, I mean didn't look like a guy I'd want taking 3s often because wasnt the greatest form but shows he has the abilty

If Josh can guard a 3 then I expect him to spend some time there although the 4 is certainly his natural position. I want Konate but we could be pretty thin at Guard in 2 years.

I think josh is a much more likely to play the 3. Based on the film I've seen he seems to move pretty well and has a good enough handle but as far as shooting goes I don't know if he is capable enough to play on the outside

King is a 4. PERIOD. Stop it.

Martin is a 4.

Gaston is a 5. He's 6'9'' with long arms and not much offensive skill. This is college, not the NBA, 6'9'' is FINE for your center.

Any news on recruits for 2014? Piper is just done because of academics, huh?

Lol at anyone other than Pitino declaring definitively what position a player will or won't play.

And I repeat, you have NEVER seen Gaston play before. Stop acting like you know he'll play center here.
