All-Big Ten

What's not true?
Literally true because some clowns voted and announced results. But not true by objective standards because we have more than one defensive player worthy of the recognition.

There may be six or more linebackers in the league as good as Gibbons but only one clearly better.

All true but if you want guys on all conference teams you gotta win games. Simple as that.

All conference honors isn’t a team award or even a unit award though.

The criteria to be all conference isn’t be a starter on a good defense. It is be the best at your position in the conference.
But in almost all all conference voting it IS a team award in almost any conference at any level. You gotta win games.
In high school in many conferences…coaches nominate players and get to sell why their nominees deserve the honor.
Finish first… you get 5 nominees. (This was basketball)
Finish last…your one person nomination has to be pretty good to garner any votes.
Voting here shows the same … Michigan was listed with 7 guys.

That’s literally not how it works at least for the media

I would put our defense up against any in the conference, outside of Michigan. I think WI has us by an edge, but not leaps and bounds better. I am surprised others did not get recognition. Hard to believe the only person recognized wasn't even an every down player. Still, all most people know is how we played against OSU (which was really poor in the 2nd half) and that we lost to 2 poor teams. Unless you have a star who will be a 1st or 2nd round draft talent, you won't stand out on a team that people weren't watching all the time.

The Gophers need more sacks, TFLs, and interceptions. Those are the things the voters look for (right or wrong). Mafe made the 2nd all-Big Ten team because he had decent sack numbers. But, he wasn't the Gophers best defensive player this year. He was good, but was not our best defensive player, but he led us in sacks and TFLs.

Gibbens had a stellar year, but the Big Ten is full of great LBs. There are LBs from other teams with more tackles than Gibbens who are not in the top 9, either. Gibbens was 18th in the Big Ten in tackles and had no sacks.

It's harder to accumulate stats when your offense is 4th in time of possession and you're not on the field that much.

Durr was the biggest miss. Teams rarely threw his way, for a reason.

True, although Wisconsin was 8th in TOP and had two guys in the Top 15 in tackles. Gibbens was 18th. Wisconsin plays a little different style of defense, too.

Bottom line is, Gibbens was good. But, there are A LOT of good LBs in the league.
