All about Max Brosmer Making the Cut

With the QB having a larger impact on blocking scheme in the upper levels, I’m hoping part of the O Line issue has been QB inexperience. That might be just hope.

We'll see, but they had the same problem at the end of last year. And a QB can't prevent players from just running around or through Skule.

I think coach's want to win and DGAF about what we say online.

If JJ isn't playing it doesn't matter what anyone thinks of someone else is playing good.
I don't know if a quarterback controvery indicating that they may have drafted poorly is as severe as the risk of not making the playoffs and jeopardizing their employment/lighting a small fire under their chair. The fanbase wouldn't care if they threw a ham sandwich out there if said ham sandwich got the team into the playoffs and got them some Ws.

Not to mention, say Brosmer ends up looking good. Really good. Wouldn't the coaching staff end up being considered brilliant for the steal they got in him? People would forget about JJ reeeeeally quickly if the next man up played at a highly competitive rate. Also, the casual fanbase, who doesn't pay attention to injury statuses or intangible things that contribute to the offense being garbage, doesn't care about anything but wins at this point. All they know is that McCarthy looks like a dud and they want to see some touchdowns to Jefferson
I don't think any NFL team would care. Look how things played out with the 49ers, Trey Lance, and Brock Purdy.

I think you're misunderstanding my point here. If Brosmer were a legitimate, starting NFL QB talent RIGHT NOW, I'd agree with you. Chances are that he's not at this point (and may not be at all). But what if he looked even marginally better than JJ? Team still isn't going to make any noise this year. Do you even want the questions coming up in the locker room about whether JJ is the guy or not? The coaches know what they have, and I'm guessing that even if Brosmer is an upgrade at this point, the margin is minimal to the point that they don't even want the potential for controversy.

It's all speculation. I'm hoping that Brosmer gets in the game. I'd love it if he ended up becoming the Vikings franchise quarterback. But there's a reason why the Vikings are choosing to roll with Wentz, a guy that was basically out of the league before we signed him, instead. And I'm not sure it has anything to do with Brosmer's readiness. His play in camp and the preseason is why the Vikes traded Howell. So they clearly think something's there.....but aren't going to play him now?

Again.....I'm just guessing that since this is a short term injury for JJ, that they don't want even a hint of controversy dredging up since they'll undoubtedly be going back to JJ when he's healthy.

I know teams are all looking at the 49ers cheap qb strategy but maybe the vikes were penny wise and pound foolish. If this were the Twins management people would be screaming ‘cheap sob ownership!’

I think you have a good read on things. If the Vikings see JJ as the longterm option and all indications are that they still do then they will want to protect him to a degree.

Tough to know what exactly they think of Brosmer's prospects but they chose to keep him so that says something. He is cheap so that certainly plays into it but they also aren't going to waste the roster spot on a guy they don't see any prospects in.

At the same time they have to try and win now so they honestly may believe a vet like Wentz or Ridder is a better short term option than a rookie like Brosmer would be.

Vikings have spent money though.

Twins had success and cut ... and apparently mortgaged the team ...

Sorta sets the stage.

Nothing wrong with the strategy if you have your guy and he pans out. If you can get production out of him on his rookie deal where he is cheap it gives you the option to spend a lot more on the pieces around him

Of course it all hinges on that guy being able to get it done. It's risky but if it works the payoff is huge.

The Vikings have salary cap considerations the Twins do not have and the Vikings typically spend right up to the limit while leaving some wiggle room in the event of the need for emergency roster additions, which may be wholesale this year at this rate. The Twins don't spend money, period.

The cheap QB strategy works. I believe prior to the 24 draft I did a fairly detailed analysis in the Vikings forum here that showed that since the salary cap era started, Super Bowls were almost always won by a team with either a hall of fame QB (Peyton, Brady, Rogers, et all) or a QB on a rookie scale contract. The Kirk Cousins of the NFL world (high priced/mid results) don't win Super Bowls.

Its early but the Vikings seemed to have believed in JJM, and that spending money around his would result in good things. The Vikings took a lot of risk on spendy, aging veterans, to surround JJM and while its possible it will come together, the injuries are already piling up deep. Its possible that the Vikings lose both gambles (JJM and the expensive veterans around him).
