All about Max Brosmer Making the Cut

It's because Brosmer will be the backup and Wentz the PS QB. O'Connell likes Brosmer that much. They couldn't put Howell on the PS.

If there is anything we have learned about O'Connell is that he knows his QBs. Brosmer has proved that he can play under pressure and is already to take the next step. His extra year of college with a completely different team makes him more than a rookie. O'Connell doesn't worry about traditional tactics. He just wins.

Wentz is a cheap and easy insurance policy. He may never play. Having Howell was the actual liability.
Wentz on the PS? Aww jeez

From an amateur not paying attention perspective it seems like they are just not confident naming Brosmer QB2

Wentz has made 133 million over his career. I doubt making 400k to be on the practice squad moves the needle much for him.

It's a chance to be back on an NFL roster. It's an opportunity to get his foot in the door with a team that has an offensive system he has some familiarity with. I'm betting Wentz will happily sign, practice squad or not.

Having said that though, I'm not sure how the Vikings will handle the backup QBs as far as who is active each week and who is on the practice squad.

As you yourself pointed out, Wentz has been unrostered for quite some time. That might be a clue... maybe the Vikings believe he'd pass through waivers easier than Brosmer would, and therefore makes a better practice squad candidate.

Max basically got a huge confidence vote here, they sign a veteran with strong connections to KOC, Wes Phillips, and McCown for the sake of stabilizing the QB room with a vet from Tue-Sat. Max likely starts if JJ goes out for an extended period.

Looking very likely that the Vikings QB room will be JJ, Wentz, Brosmer

Brosmer should have a great shot at the #2 gig next season, and might even get his name called ahead of Wentz if it's later in the year and the Vikings are out of contention.

Again, I trust KOC on qb's. He must have decided Howell wasn't fixable and Wentz is.
If they don't believe Howell has any sort of long term upside it makes sense to get something for him and then hand the backup role to an experienced guy like Wentz. Obviously the hope is he never has to play.

So it probably comes down to Brosmer vs. Rypen for the emergency QB/practice squad guy. Hopefully they see enough upside in Max to give him that role.

Based on Rypien's performance it doesn't look like a very hard decision to make.

I agree but you never know with these NFL roster decisions. But it certainly looks like Max is in a great position to have a spot with the Vikings next season, even if it is on the practice squad.

Opposite actually. Wentz is a one year stop gap backup. Assuming Max continues to progress, he's the long term #2/developmental QB. They couldn't roll with JJM and Max. They need someone with experience to jump in short term if needed.

Max shouldn't be #2 currently with zero NFL experience. But these moves speak a lot to how the staff views him.

BROS FOR BROSMER

As for Wentz, I don't see the point of bringing him on. Has a history of not getting along with his teammates, and every team who picks him up ... doesn't keep him around. Just seems like negatives, for a guy who is not gud ...

I think "long term upside" is one factor, but it might not be as important in choosing a backup QB as it is when picking your starter. The third QB might only be on the Vikings roster for 1-2 seasons, if that.

Ask O'Connell. Tell him you have concerns.

Here are some possible reasons:

1) Some experience in running a system similar to the Vikings'.

2) Has had some past success.

3) Very cheap.

4) Availability.

5) And... (drum roll)... He might, just might, turn out to be an upgrade over Howell and Rypien. It looks like O'Connell thinks he will be.

Prediction. Max is number 2 and Wentz is there because when your top 2 QBs have zero NFL starts it helps to have someone in the room that has over 100. He's here to impart knowledge, wisdom and experience.
Disagree. Wentz is the number 2. They didn't sign him just to be the number 3. he was sign to be the number 2. Max is the number 3.

I don't see why Wentz HAS to be 2 ... I don't think they paid a ton for Wentz did they?

Even if we just say it's a 50/50 chance he might be #2, but I'm not sure there's anything about this singing that means he HAS to be #2.

I agree with this to the point that it will be situational between 2 and 3. For instance, Wentz will get the call if JJ gets hurt in the middle of a game, but Max gets the nod if there’s available garbage time.

Beacuse you don't sign a qb to be a number 3. He was sign to be the backup to JJ McCarthy. Why do we have this and that and this and that. he was sign to be the number 2 QB not the number 3.

I've been a football fan since 1968, and this is the first I've heard of these ironclad rules.

You learn something new every day.

I agree that if JJ goes down in a game, Wentz will be the guy that goes in to finish that game meaning he will be listed as the #2 on the depth chart.

Beyond that however there might be a legit battle between Wentz and Brosmer for who would be the starter if JJ goes down for an extended period of time. Or they would make a trade of some kind.

Very well stated…and to help the young ones deal with the ups and downs of a big loss or an incredible win. Never get too cocky or too down. Twenty two and twenty four need a lot of stability in their qb room before this season is finished. Seems to me CW was a great hire and will be a great presence in that qb room!
