Alipate

Kill's QB checklist
1. plays basketball - check

ok he's athletic enough
I'm not quite sure what your point is? Are you saying that basketball players are not good athletes?

I saw Alipate play football and basketball in HS and he is a good athlete. He may not be a speedster, but he can run over DB's. I think Alipate can play in Kill's offense.

Apilate will do fine.

Remember are game against NIU this year? The NIU quarterback wasn't all that athletic. You gotta think that Apilate is just as athletic as him. I think Apilate is just as athletic as Weber right? And Weber certainly did fine in the spread as a frosh. He lead our team in rushing as a freshman. I wouldn't be shocked if Apilate transfered, but I would be surprised if he transferred because of Kill's offense and what type of qb kill wanted.

I also think Alipate will be fine. However, I don't think he is as fast as the NIU QB. That kid is pretty quick for a QB, i'd compare him to Persa from NWestern. He ran for 120 against Illinois.

So when you say Alipate will be fine in Kill's offense. Are all of you saying you think and want him to play QB instead of Gray?

Harnish can run circles around Alipate. I doubt we have a QB that is as complete as Harnish.

Alipate will do fine? How? He is one of the softest looking kids on the gopher sidelines, it looks like he let himself go in 8th grade. He is overweight and slow and would never cut it in a spread offense. NIU's QB Harnish was pretty athletic, we rushed for 760 yards this past year which put him 2nd on the team in rushing. If Alipate is named the starter next fall then this program really has no hope and I will refuse to go to any games; Gray is one of the best athletes we have ever had, put the ball and game in his hands and good thins will happen. If he is left at WR and thrown to 6 times a game it will be the biggest waste of talent.[/QUOTE

Has anyone even mentioned the prospect of Alipate starting next season? The question was might he transfer because the system isn't a good fit?

You sound like you know a lot about him. When have you ever seen him play? Or are you just judging him by how he looks on the sideline?

Wow, a 36 post thread about football!

And only 1 or 2 entries where someone got out of their e-bed on the wrong side. For a second I thought I wasn't on the gopherhole.;)

Good discussion. I agree that Alipate is a good athlete, and he does seem to bleed maroon & gold for a variety of reasons. I think there is an argument, however, that his strengths may not mesh well with Kill's preferred philosophy. Time will tell. I hope he does get an opportunity.

If nothing else, it will be interesting to see if Kill taps into his JUCO network to bring in a QB. That decision will be a vote of confidence in Gray and the other QB talent on the current roster. No JUCO means Kill is all in on Gray (with Alipate as a backup). Yes on a 2-yr QB means that he's hedging his bets. Either way its probably Gray's job to lose going into spring ball.

We're assessing health by how people look on the sidelines?

Are we selling jeans or trying to win football games? There are plenty of guys who pass the eyeball test yet have no heart or just aren't good football players, in the same way there are guys who might not look the part but are fantastic division one athletes.

This goes to a different sport, but I can't help but think of Khalid El-Amin, who won a national championship at UConn, despite the fact that he always looked like he enjoyed eating at his restaurant more than running sprints. It takes a lot more than a chiseled body to play quarterback for a division I team. Byron Leftwich sure did alright in college.

I don't know that Alipate is the solution, but I would like to see him in AT LEAST spring practice before people completely write him off.

Watch the last two games. Clearly the QB most involved from the bench is Lueck.

It seems odd to me that Lueck would always be the one discussing things with Weber/coaches and not Alipate.
