Absolutely Embarrassing By All the Non-Students

I've said it before and I'll say it again -- Williams Arena lost a lot of its advantage when we replaced the wooden benches with seats between the baselines. When you're sitting on a hard wooden bench for 2 hours, you're not going to mind standing. As someone who's seen and attended these games for almost 30 years, the crowd difference is very noticeable to me.

I think everybody would agree that it isn't as loud as it used to be, but you said you weren't there last night, and it was very loud.

It is so wearisome to continually hear how AWESOME the U of M student section thinks it is.

The University of Minnesota has a student population of nearly 50,000. Yet we couldn't get more that 1000 to show up prior to the Tubby era. 1000 students that pretty much just sat there. Now we have an exciting team that has peeked the interest of a small portion of the 50,000 strong student body. They come to some of the games and start their clever little chants and marvel at how great they are.

The contempt expressed by this poster(awag777) for the balance of the Gopher fan base is disheartening. I really thought the entire crowd was pretty good last night. I know I was hoarse. But then when you are in the middle of a bunch of screaming fans it might be easy underestimate the contribution of the rest of the crowd.

Our student section is great when they show up like they did for the last two games but for the rest of the year it was certainly not outstanding.

I guarantee you the student section WILL NOT BE FULL for the Iowa game. And the enthusiasm in the student section will be lackluster at best. If student section was as awesome as this poster implies it is, it would be full and just as wonderful for Iowa as it was last night.

Look. We can all stop pointing fingers at fellow fans with how they react. I happened to be able to get front row seats last night, right in front of the recruits, and I was standing at every opportunity. Are there people that sit down too much? Sure. But guess what? The last two or three games are the only times this year I've seen a full student section. Let's all admit that there are some people who come to games, whatever their age, who don't care as much. We can't control that. All we can do is cheer as loud as we can, and hope our enthusiasm is infectious.

There are 4 million people in the state of minnesota, and before the tubby era you couldn't get 12000 to come to the barn.

It is even more wearisome to continually hear how TERRIBLE everyone thinks the student section is. Last game I don't remember the non-students standing for any thing other than a timeout until there were 4 seconds left. I dont remember seeing anyone else clapping for our important defensive stands for that matter, everybody was just sitting there.

Students don't show up to every game because many of 50000 either commute to campus, are international students who don't care about our sports that much, or have academic conflicts. I have been going to gopher games my whole life, and if this wasn't the biggest game of the year, I probably wouldn't have gone because I had a class conflict. But I was in line at 5, and I lost my voice by halftime.

I am not saying all non students didnt cheer, but the vast majority I saw were half-heartedly cheering.

You are wrong. Plain-and-simple.

A little FYI - you don't need to stand in order to be loud. Plenty of people were doing that.

p.s. I thought the student section was excellent last night.

I sat behind the Purdue bench, and there are plenty of older people in that area. They were very vocal last night. Just because they dont stand up, doesnt mean they arent being vocal. A lot of the people on the sidelines have been season ticket holders for 50+ years. When it takes you 30 seconds just to stand up, you arent gonna be doing a lot of standing and sitting. But you better believe these people were vocal. So please just shut up about everyone else not being loud enough. The Barn had a great buzz about it last night, and it was great in there.

The student section will be full against Iowa.
