7 Footer Liam Robbins from Drake Commits

Robbins' story reminds me of Patrick O Bryant the 7 footer from Minnesota who was lightly regarded and then blew up at Bradley by his Soph year and got drafted.

I like tourney runs.

Of course, you're better positioned to make run if you're seeded higher....
Right, so of course the implied context is with a seed that the Gophers would typically have.

Not like a 1/2/3/4 seed.

per Shama:

The NCAA has yet to rule on whether players can transfer one time during their college careers and become eligible to play the next season (rather than sit out a year). That will impact former Drake center Liam Robbins, a shot blocking specialist who is transferring to the Gophers. The guess here is the NCAA will approve the immediate eligibility rule. Keeping players on the field or court is in the organization’s best interest for marketing the college product. It’s also a difficult argument to say free-wheeling coaches can leave one school for another but players cannot.

Go Gophers!!

Finally something he wrote that I like and seems well thought out IMO

Check out videos on this free page from Gopher Illustrated on Robbins. Ryan James does a great job of pulling together these clips. I am very impressed with the play of Liam! He strong around the basket, gets his shot to fall and is athletic and aggressive. He looks by far the best of the big guys that were linked to the U. I can see where some people are saying they think he will play in the NBA.

I doubt he gets pushed around very much. He looks to have a pretty sturdy base. It should be helpful against players like Garza.

Go Gophers!!

Was just coming in here to post this haha. His post moves aren’t always this clean and there will be an adjustment to the size in the Big Ten but the more you watch of him, the more you like him. He’s got great touch around the basket as Daniels says and looks a natural shot blocker on the other end. There’s definitely All-B1G potential there. Quite the coup by the staff

Just need one or two (?) More good ones and we'll be Dancin' yah

This is a great reel. So in control of his body making moves in the post there. Great touch. This kid is legit.
He makes everything he puts up (which is obviously good), but he's got that RSIII thing where he's falling away from the basket on every shot that makes me nervous

Yeah I like when he goes straight up with the hook. Left or right hand. That's a 3ft shot right over smaller guys. It looks like the power is there if it's encouraged more than the fade.

Huge get. We had nothing to protect the rim. He'll get immediate eligibility just for the simple fact that they are going to put the one time waiver rule in for all sports.
Rim protection is vital! It allows our guards to play a little closer to the perimeter and in the opponent’s pockets just a little bit more; which in a high quality league like the B1G can be the difference between an average to good or good to great defense. Now, hopefully his foul rate is low. For how great a Gopher he was, two of THE most underrated qualities that Daniel Oturu possessed were his vastly improved conditioning and his ability to not foul and stay on the floor. If Robbins is eligible and healthy he will block shots and make our whole defense better. Huge get!

Great post for a new member - welcome - and you have a great moniker as well. Surprised your post wasn't fumbled and dropped and resulted in a turnover.

Philosophically, Konate was kind of like The personification of Leroy Hoard’s; if you need two yards I’ll get you three. If you need four yards, I’ll get you three. BK was more like, if you need a foul, I’ll get you two. If you need a bucket, I’ll get you two fouls. All jokes aside, I thought he played his heart out, left it out on the floor, played for his teammates, and represented the Maroon and Gold well for four years (just could have used a certain #3’s hands)

Liam also helps in the recruitment of Holmgren who is on record about not playing the 5 in college...Also getting Chet would likely cement another year here for Richard

per Marcus' Q&A:

Q: Do you expect Liam Robbins to take Daniel Oturu’s spot in the starting lineup? – Chris B (@Cbeams27)

A: Robbins, a sophomore transfer from Drake, has everything you would want in a starting center. He’s got size at 7-feet and 240 pounds. He’s a rim protector having ranked fifth in the nation with 2.9 blocks last season. His offensive skills are advanced enough with his post game and facing the basket to give you double figures in scoring. The biggest question is whether Robbins will be eligible to play immeadiately. He told me after committing Sunday that he's filing a waiver to the NCAA, which is about being able to play with family. His uncle (Gophers assistant Ed Conroy is his mom's brother) and cousin (walk-on Hunt Conroy) are on the team. Their families have planned summer trips together for years. Liam and Hunt are very close, so it's pretty cool they'll be college teammates. There's still a chance Robbins might not be eligible until 2021-22. That's why the Gophers reached out earlier to Loyola Marymount's Mattias Markusson and recently to Purdue's Matt Haarms, both 7-3 graduate transfers. Freshman Sam Freeman is the only true center currently on the roster.

Go Gophers!!

Better left hand then Oturu. But boy, will I miss Big Dan.

@RyanBurnsMN: That'd be some big news.
Forgot to post this last night when I saw it. Would be good news for Robbins.
This is definitely great news for Robbins. This would also make it more palatable to get a non-grad transfer for the final open spot (like Drew Peterson from Rice).

Since the vote is May 20th. Unlikely to impact final scholarship.
