??????

I just think that your personal crusade over one particular error that is common is silly, as is disregarding everything someone says if they make it.

That's not what I said.

Everyone has those one or two words they always spell incorrectly or mix up.

I don't. Sure, I make mistakes in logic and thought sometimes, but I never spell incorrectly.

combing posts looking for errors

I don't have to "comb" anything. When someone has misspelled words, it may as well be a giant flashing billboard on the Vegas Strip.

rather then taking them at the face value intended by the poster is a waste of time, IMO

I disagree.

I thought he meant Rodney was playing worse, and then Hollins is something..... :)

So when my brother-in law says " I seen you do it" I can disregard him because he is ignorant?

Oh if life were only that simple.

Do you not understand how misusing a homonym that even my 4-year-old understands (no exaggeration) makes one look like a simpleton?

I mean, how does a fully-functioning adult expect to be taken seriously as a poster if they can't utilize basic elementary spelling skills? And, conversely, if one doesn't expect to be taken seriously, then don't get upset when one's posts are dissected.

I know that when I see a post rife with spelling and grammatical errors, I pretty much discredit anything the poster has to say from there on out. Whether you want to believe it or not, proper use of communication is a sign of intelligence, and someone who can't use basic words properly either has a learning disability or is not very intelligent.

And, while I do realize that we are on an informal message board, misspelling basic words like "then/than" do not fall under the umbrella of "internet slang" or whatever moniker you wish to use.

That specific type of error is not misspelling, it is misusing. "Then" was spelled properly. It's okay, I still read your post.

does this all mean I can't use pizzing (or pi$$ing) contest terminology anymore unless I spell pissing correctly or catch hell?

You know, as a teacher, I would agree that spelling is very important. And when I see teachers that can't spell, it sends up red flags as you indicate. But let's get serious. This is basketball. We aren't building NASA rockets. If Kevin Garnett comes to GopherHole and critiques Colton Iverson's post play with some less than spectacular grammar and spelling, one should disregard everything he says? Being a grammar snob is one thing (I'm in a family of them, so I know) but being completely unrealistic about the topic is another.

If the correct word was "than", and you spell it "then", that is a misspelling. Just because the misspelled word also happens to be another word doesn't mean that it is not a misspelling.

I guarantee that every person on this board who misspells homonyms does it in their (school/work/hobby/fantasy football) life. It's not like they're just doing it here, and then magically using them correctly everywhere else. Further, these are the types of errors that spell check doesn't catch. They probably won't care and will continue to do it anyway, but that won't stop me from speaking up.

I think you're (not your) misusing the word homonym. I just got around to reading this thread. "Then" and "than" are not homonyms.

At least, not according to Alan Cooper.

http://www.cooper.com/alan/homonym_list.html

I don't know who Alan Cooper is, or why I'm supposed to care what he thinks. Technically, he is correct according to the strict dictionary definition. However, given that most people pronounce the two exactly the same, for practical purposes, they are homonyms. If they weren't, people wouldn't confuse the two so commonly in written usage.

I agree. And if my son did it, I'd speak up. When other adults do it, in the process of trying to make a legitimate argument and not trying to cause trouble, your critique comes off as arrogant. But to each his own I guess.

You guarantee it? How? I can assure you that if I am writing something for work, I take my time, re-read it, and you use something with a spell-check capability. If I'm responding to a post on here, I write whatever my thought is and hit send, half the time using something with no spell-check. Even though I got A's in English, I'm far more likely to make a mistake in the latter scenario. I'm sure others are in the same boat. And almost no one except you will care.

Did you work endless hours to be a prick, or did it just come naturally?

I disagree. Spell check to avoid the random typo that we all are bound to make is one thing. However. you shouldn't have to take your time and re-read something just to make sure you're not using any words incorrectly, such as a your/you're. Homonyms are not the same as a typo. That's his whole point. If you can't avoid using words incorrectly in your normal way of typing then you're already behind the battle.

Who gives a $hit about a few grammatical errors on a fricking blog? I mean, like, they're there in their right minds and that is all that counts. And then, I would rather the message gets delivered than it not getting delivered.

Josh you normally seem like a voice of reason around here (and I hope you don't take my quote "Josh makes one of the best points..." quote off of your moniker here ...I had technical issues and had to choose a different "Jags" year but its me).

BUT, the point is: No one is disputing that spelling, etc ...is important. What people are disputing is the arrogance of someone on a basketball board who says one can't be listened to - or even given respect that adults are usally afforded in normal society - because one makes grammatical errors. No doubt a person is better off if you can write correctly. But I'm sorry, again, we are talking about people who are writing about basketball. I know at least two very good local basketball coaches who know more than most any of us about the game, but probably would get savaged on this board because of their writing.

As an example, read your first line starting with "However." There are typos and it makes no sense. I'm sure you are a very bright guy and you have a lot to offer. Your friend here just condescendingly casts everyone off for the same stuff.

Enough of this silliness.

dpodoll, do you disregard posters with obvious basketball knowledge just because they spell a word incorrectly? Something tells me that not all of the ESPN basketball experts are excellent spellers. Obviously that's an exaggerated example, but I'm sure there are plenty of people on here who have more basketball knowledge than either of us but struggle to spell correctly at times.

Holy cow. I come to this topic expecting to read about "??????????" but instead I get a grammar and spelling lesson? Come on, let's get back to the topic at hand which obviously was punctuation.

eye think weave all learned hour lessen! Right like ewe now wat your talking a bout. If you don't be pre-paired too bee called out. Butt donut let it bother u. Just move on.

That's a fair viewpoint. Heck, you pointed out that I accidentally used a period instead of a comma. We all make those typos. I don't go after people pointing out their grammatical mistakes like DP, but I think people need to realize that how they write does influence how people perceive their thoughts and viewpoints even if they don't get called out in a post.

First of all, wow, I can’t believe I actually read this entire thread, and am now contributing to the cluster F.

Next, I think it is funny that someone said people pronounce “than” and “then” the same because I think of MN as being one of the few places where things are annunciated well. Here in CA you never know what you are going to get. People here say “get off the car” instead of “get out of the car.”

Also, I just have say this issue comes up at least once a year on this board since 2002 and it always gets out of proportion, but entertains.

Finally, you folks are forgetting one of the worst and now acceptable butcher-ings of our beloved language: I’m doin’ good. People say that on TV now and no one blinks.

But most entertaining are eggcorns: old-timers disease, a mute point, all for not, baited breath, for all intensive purposes…

Oh, and yeah, I think Hollins is greater scoring threat than Williams, but won’t end up on SportsCenter as often.

Sweet Jesus !

I agree Stewie. This is an all-time classic thread hijacking.

Can an Admin move this mess to the Off-Topic Board, please?

I'd be completely fine with that, but... the thread title is a little vague.
