2025 Transfer Portal Watch

Is it not equally possible that the situation the school presented failed to materialize? South Carolina just had their best player announce for the NBA. If the school told Eaglestaff either a) this guy is staying and you get to play with him and/or b) indicated they could pay $X and then failed to produce that amount of money, is it not fair for him to reconsider?

This board puts a lot of onus on the players in situations where we only have partial information.
Entirely possible you are right, there is so much unknown in all this. A lot of the onus gets put on the players because they are the ones choosing to enter the transfer portal and move from school to school. But the schools share in the blame for the craziness as well.

Entire thing is a mess.

The ranking of portal addns to rosters, having MN #10 is not a "thing". leib0039 is correct as it is a numbers game based more on volume of transfers than roster quality moving forward.

A far better/fun purely analytic evaluation of the current rosters is available on Torvik. Go to Funalytics/Rostercast/Minnesota and the Gopher roster currently has a numerical "power rating" of .7551. That places MN roughly at a TRank of 75th in NCAA. Using "Add Anybody" feature, you can place anyone from the portal onto MN roster and see the analytic-based change of the team. I added a rim protector like fmr MN recruit Christian Reeves (7-0, Clemson) and it raised MN up a few spots nationally. You can see the influence certain players have on the AdjOff/AdjDef by the change in the team value. MN currently has AdjO 107.6, AdjD 97.6 which projects as reasonably balanced.

As a reality check, I looked at North Carolina current roster ranked .9500 projecting them about 8th in the country. AdjO 118.5, AdjD 91.8 highly skilled on both ends.

It makes me wonder what analytics and player ratings the coaching staffs are using in the "War Room" to evaluate who they should/shouldn't contact.

As an aside, despite the transfer portal closing in a week, anybody already in the portal at that time can sign with any team in the next 3 months. There is no urgency in signing players by 4/22, the urgency is on the players to get into the portal before that date. Grad. students or special exemptions extend the 4/22 date further.

And I said I wasn't going to do this again. :)

Good stuff! Thanks. However, right after you made that adjustment, I see that Christian Reeves has committed to the College of Charleston. You'll have to pick a different center for your next simulation.

I am wondering if a bigger fish came sniffing around. Or wants to be closer to home. (I don't think he ends up on the gophers)
Maybe, but the cynical side of me is inclined to believe he got a better offer from someone else and suddenly wasn't as interested in South Carolina anymore. Will be interesting to see where he ends up and what kind of $$$ figures are released in regards to his pay for play numbers.

I don't disagree that they need to figure out the eligibility limits and fast but if a kid can make six or seven figures to pretend to go to school for a year why not.

Working 9-5 for the next forty years sucks for most. If you can jump start early retirement or at least pay cash for a house or other expenses that bury most for years why not.

Wondering if programs will keep scholarships open in case they can snag these players or retain existing ones.
i'm more on the side that NIL and rev share will dominate the decision making, as long as a chair is still available (roster spot). scholarship or no scholarship. 15 spots and six still open? i might wait a bit to see how the dollars shake out

We need to get old men out of college basketball. This is utter insanity if these hangers-on get another year of eligibility for no reason.
I don't really care if the players get another year or not but would love to see things get to the point where the eligibility rules make sense the way they used to in the good ole days. :)

Every other human being in American has lived under these "new rules" since at least the Civil War. You go about it in your daily life every time you hire, fire, apply for a job, quit, land a contract, etc. Students were slowly robbed by the NCAA since their inception. Maybe we should kill the beast entirely. Death to the organization known as the NCAA.

huh?

Lu'Cye Patterson in portal further emphasizes a likely NCAA 5th year allowance to be ruled in June....
I thought I just read a statement the NCAA denying football players another year that they are taking eligibility rules seriously at least in part because perpetual eligibility denies others opportunities. There is no way they can rule on all these cases individually. It will be yes or no and when it is no, the court will decide.

I bet very few teams get near fifteen scholarships ever. 12-13 scholarships and a couple of walk ons with some cash associated with it. That’s a lot of bodies. No need to have a whole roster of scholarship players.

Every other human being in the United States has the right to determine their life as opposed to these college students who have to deal with the NCAA, an organization that does not represent their needs. I'll set up an LLC tomorrow to regulate your life tomorrow in the name of fairness to all the other sports bulletin boards. You can only transfer to another board to make a post if you apply in a narrow window in May and the board has to accept you. We are doing this to keep your amateur writer status pure.

what?

My apologies if this has been previously posted, but on3's big ten transfer portal ranking top 4. Much credit to the new coach:
1. Michigan
2. Wisconsin
3. Washington
4. Minnesota
Looks good. But not really. We need a 5 in the worst way. And another potential impact player.

Right now these premature rankings aren’t even worth discussing

Yeah, we have brought in 6 transfers so far. Really doesn't matter if they are good or not ...
