2025 Minnesota High School Football Thread

I live in the central part of the state. Here is my .02 on the class A and AA games listed

Minneota will win by a large margin.

Upsala swanville will win by 3+ scores. A-B-E doesnt have the size, speed, or discipline to play with good teams. Several ineligible players I had heard from grades and drinking through the season

Pillager over S-M In a barn burner. I think Pillager is ready to make the jump this year. Couple highly recruited players and thuer SIZE will be hard for any team to deal with moving forward
Yeah, it would be a good upset if Minneota lost. They should probably win by 25+

Yeah, hadn't heard abouyt the A-B-E issues and not familiar with the rosters but if Upsala has the bigger more athletic team you would have to take them.

Pillager looks good for sure.

The new large league no longer has playoffs. They play games and have competitive match-ups for a bowl game tomorrow. Then if teams want to they can play in a 3-game tournament next weekend at the National Sports Center against teams from MN and WI.
There are a bunch of leagues and most have playoffs

Crazy night of upsets

Edina over Minnetonka 27-20
Mounds View over Forest Lake 28-23
Osseo over Andover 23-21
STMA over Moorhead 29-27
Farmington over Shakopee 15-6

I’m mind blown
Tonka - Edina was an ugly one.

Tonka - Edina was an ugly one.
So was MV and FL. Even in a few years ago when FL was 6-2 and MV was 2-6 and 4-4 the games went right down to the end of the game for FL to win. MV just seems to be a terrible matchup for FL. MV just struggles with Stillwater every year and FL plays Stillwater tough every year and even won last year.

In what way?

Will be interesting to see how these upsets affect the seeding.

Looks like Prior Lake gave South a battle but South came out on top so it will be South at Rosemount next week in a winner take all matchup in the South Metro.

MV matches up and plays the option well on defense. Shakopee struggled to beat them last year as well. 6A has some parity to it because of matchups.

Seeing a lot of scores that suggest some wide open playoff action coming.

Blaine scored the tying TD against Centennial and had it called back.

Hutch destroyed TG.
Mahtomedi beat Cretin by one
Byron beat Stewartville by 3

Hard to get teens to consistently show up for games especially if they scoreboard watch or to get the focused after big win.

Shakopee must be injured as they lose to Farmington who just lost to Eagan.

Will be really interesting to see what happens with Maple Grove and Minnetonka play on the 15th. Those two definitely feel like they are a cut above everyone else.

But anything can happen once you get to playoffs...

Seeding projections 6a
It’s all coaches vote so this is my thoughts on how it’ll work out but there are no rules

West:
1) winner of Minnetonka vs maple Grove
2) loser of that game
3) EP
4) Edina
5) st Micheal
6) Moorhead
7) wayzata
8) Hopkins

East:
1. Forest lake
2. Woodbury (if they beat east ridge, if they don’t they’re 3)
3. Moundsview (if east ridge beats Woodbury slide to 4)
4. East ridge (jump to 2 with win over Woodbury
5. Stillwater (if they beat forest lake and white bear beats Moundsview could jump to 4)
6. White Bear lake - probably locked at 6 but could cause Moundsview to fall all the way to 5 by beating them)
7. Roseville
8. Park

North:
1. Centennial
2. Champlin park
3. Andover (if they beat Blaine, slide to 5 with a loss)
4. Blaine (slide up one if beat Andover)
5. Osseo (slide up one if they win week 8 and Blaine beats Andover)
6. Rogers
7. Anoka
8. Coon rapids

South
1. South vs Rosemount winner
2. South vs Rosemount loser
3. Farmington vs prior lake winner
4. Farmington vs prior lake loser
5. Shakopee
6. Lakeville North
7. Eagan
8. Eastview

Really appreciate you putting this together! I’m paying attention from IL, so I’m not super close to what’s going on back at home. This is great.

Mike Sherels fighting the MN Youth status quo of Youth Football and evenly distributing talent. MN Youth programs evenly distribute talent. He argues that it should be A, B, C level like other sports. The top programs disagree with him. Good article with some good quotes.

I'm I'm not in the football world but that's interesting to read. Every other sport has tiered levels so it's interesting that football doesn't. I think one thing that could potentially be a problem with football (I have no idea because all I hear is from neighbors and coworkers) is how many programs have enough players for C teams? Would you be able to find competitive games in a tiered system?

Soccer at U13 and up has basically 5 levels which is kind of crazy. But everyone for the most part finds the right level and leagues are competitive.

Youth football should be about three things:

1. Having fun
2. Safety
3. Learning the game

Boys develop physically at such differing levels. How many kids who play varsity football end up in a completely different position than what they played in youth ball? Dads who want to brag about their kids being on an “all-star” youth football team should not and will not dictate how programs are run.

If FL $hits the bed and loses to Stillwater, meaning they lose the final 2 games and Woodbury beats East Ridge to only have one league loss(even being head to head to FL by 51) with both teams being 6-2 then Woodbury gets the #1 seed I read according to Coach Lantz

As an LMAA youth football parent (for one more day - the boy starts high school next year) and former coach, I don't have a problem with the way they run the league for the most part. And the article is a little bit off. Of course everyone knows the scores of the games, even if they don't post standings. I disagree with Sherels - I think equal time keeps kids engaged and helps prevent attrition.

My only issue with the LMAA is the overly complicated rotation rules (I'm not even going to try to explain them - the article over simplified them) and the lack of enforcement. There's one program (rhymes with Medina) that consistently cheats in that aspect, every other team and coach knows it, and nothing is done about it.

If they wanted playoffs, they could just re-seed into A,B,C at that point. That's how SW league (non-travel) basketball does it. But then again, there are 30-40 teams in that league.
