2025 Minnesota High School Football Thread

The Maple Grove vs Minnetonka game at the end of the regular season should be a really interesting high school football tilt. 6A looks like Maple Grove and Minnetonka are the cream of the crop with EP, Shakopee, Rosemount, Lakeville South pick em's. Playoffs this year should display great HS football.
Forest lake is in that upper group as well

I’ve seen them play and I would say they’re not. Based on way the bracket is set up. The 1-2 seeds from the north and east are huge to possibly get two home games.

Rosemount 4-1 lost to Cenntennial
Centennial lost to Andover
Andover lost to Champlin

I’d go
Maple Grove
Minnetonka
Eden Prairie
Centennial
Rosemount
Shakopee

All before considering Forest lake. FL will get a #1 seed however based on section.

Well then fingers crossed that Rosemount ends up in Forest Lake's part of the bracket I guess :)

Will be interesting to see how it all shakes out over the next few weeks. Definitely a couple clear cut favorites at the top but anything can happen once you get to playoffs.

In other 6A news, Moorhead at home got crushed by Maple Grove.

No idea if they were still without their QB, guessing so
Moorhead QB did not play yet. He would absolutely make a difference, but from what I have observed watching a couple Moorhead games is that their defense will have a hard time slowing down those top end offenses, especially on the ground.

The Robbinsdale school district wants to close Armstrong and Cooper high schools because of declining enrollment and a growing deficit. They want to build one state of the art high school for the whole district. If this does happen I am sure they would be in the biggest class. Bring back the old Robbinsdale Robins?
It would be really cool if they became the Robins again.

I wonder what the adjusted enrollment would be. It's not the wealthiest district.

Armstrong is currently 1518
Cooper is 1003

Together that’s 2521 which would be number 6 in the state

Armstrong on its own has been a 6a school as recently as 2017-2018

The western half where Armstrong is in Plymouth but I am not sure of the exact boundaries. That is where the money is. I wonder if Bloomington will ever go this route.
I’ve heard people say that Minneapolis should go this route and consolidate to two high schools

Robbinsdale district only spears (for lack of aa better word) into Plymouth in a particular bit.

I have to wild guess a lot of folks who happen to land in that, living west of 169 try to get into MG or Wayzata, similar to how Minnetonka residents in the Hopkins district try to get into Minnetonka.

No idea on their success rates.

Wayzata and MG high schools are closed to open enrollment.

As far as Bloomington goes, they just built brand new football stadiums at each high school.

I don't think they're planning to consolidate any time soon.

Have to think a good number of families would try to transfer out, if they do this.

Takes away opportunities for kids on the lower end of the talent spectrum to participate and start. Not just sports, but activities as well.

Probably also not going to be an exact 1:1 keeping of every teacher and every seat .... so class sizes will rise.

Overall crappy deal ... but money is money.

Most families don't want to transfer out and most do it for a ademic reasons, not sports. There could be a academic benefits to merging schools (more offerings and if money is saved you could get smaller class sizes). And the top athletes (which are the ones more likely to transfer), would probably appreciate having better sports teams.

It's tough for me to imagine academic benefits of increased class sizes.

Again main problem being the district is financially broke ... how are they then going to turn around and say they're offering a brand new, expensive academic thing -- to make something up, say a new IB program -- while closing two schools to build a brand new one??

That makes no sense.

My guess is that this is a bluff, to try to force the state into bailing them out.

There was a period of about 10 years in the 1970's when Bloomington had 3 high schools. Enrollment, finances, and demographics can change rapidly. Perhaps we may at some point go back to the Bloomington Bears. The city is land locked for growth but it still may be just to big for one high school.

If they merge high schools and save money they could presumably make class sizes smaller. Keeping as is will make class sizes higher.

There is actually quite a lot of wealth in West Bloomington. And East Bloomington is comparatively quite poor.

That will also be a factor in preventing a city-wide merger.

They have to save money just to dig out of debt. They aren't going to hire even more teachers than they already have now, at one building.

If I'm wrong, fine I'm wrong. Just doesn't make sense to me, given the financial situation

I think we can at least agree that spending more money by having 2 high schools won't help hire more teachers and lower class sizes.

It's the deferred and upcoming maintenance that's breaking their backs.

It will cost a pretty penny to build a new building at a new site, but the accountants are trying to price it out on the 10-20 year scale.

I think they're looking for a bailout

Well people don’t transfer out of Minnetonka and wayzata

So I guess it depends on if the perception of the school is that it’s great or terrible
