2025 Minnesota High School Football Thread

I couldn't believe Orono was going for 2.....it's hard to believe they thought the odds of getting the 2 point conversion were better than making a 35 yard extra point/field goal.....but they obviously knew their kicker's limitations....
I think a lot of high school coaches don’t want that kid to live with the result of that kick the rest of their lives.

Would you rather have a 60% chance of tying or a 40% chance of winning?

40% seems high for one play from the 18….but if they’re playing man zero what’s the chance you catch a fade?

A 35 yarder seems like nothing in college and the pros but for a high school kid that is a pretty long kick. Not to mention you have to rely on a good snap and hold as well under a ton of pressure.

Going for 2 was their best option from there and they caught a break on how it was defended.

I didn’t watch the first game in its entirety but I say yes they certainly could.
They’ve got the better QB and are one of the best coached teams year after year, to me.

So they have a chance

I am picking Edina to win the whole thing
^ Brilliant mind right here!

Didn't like the two-point conversion play call. The previous two drives you spread the field and your QB looks like Drew Brees, so bring in a hobbled RB who hasn't been on the field for a long time and slowly and predictably run him into the teeth of the defense. Too horizontal, if a run was the call they should've gone up the middle, where their OL was dominating.

Yeah, 35 yarder in HS is like a 60+ yarder in the NFL. There aren't that many HS teams that have a kicker that has a good chance to make that.

I turned it off at 28-7 and came back at 28-28. Great game with nearly 1,000 yards of offense
It was a very similar script to the first time they played. Tonka was absolutely steamrolling Edina out of the gate and scored 4 quick TDs on 4 possessions. Then a series of turnovers and busted coverages allowed Mason West to absolutely torch the Tonka secondary.
Francois and Tonka’s top WR were injured in the third quarter, but Tonka scored two quick touchdowns with under 8 minutes without those two to bring it within 1. For some reason, Tonka burned two time outs with 1:40 left and put in a cold and injured Francois who had sat the whole 4th Quarter to try for the 2-pt conversion. He limped out to the backfield and was absolutely stuffed on an OZ run.

I was at the game and walking out of the stadium on the Tonka side, there was so much "WTF coach" commentary happening. I like the decision to go for the win (Tonka had finally swung momentum back to their side), but the burning of two timeouts only to bring on Francois who was limping on the sideline for 30 minutes, and then run a very east/west outside zone play to the player everyone was keying on...wow.

The burning of the timeouts was wild.
Because they could’ve gotten ball back with 3 timeouts
By calling two it made it do or die

May have been anyways Edina needed just one or two first downs but

At the end of the day high school overtime is really short fields.
Whoever has the better kicker has a serious advantage.
So I get why tonka wanted to win right there.
Edina has a really good kicker

Tough way to end the season, but Tonka has a couple really strong classes coming up, I think they’ll be contenders for awhile!

I have no issue going for two especially in high school. Really hard to put high school careers on the foot of kicker.

Put it on the coaches call and if it doesn’t work, he can live with it.

Taking two timeouts is malpractice as well as putting in a kid that was too hurt to play the last quarter of the game.

Hard for me to rag on playing someone banged up

If he is cleared by trainer and wants to play hard to tell a kid no.
Now, if them being hurt hurts the team that’s malpractice if the next option was better.

In that situation if you have to call timeout, I think you come back from it and kick so the timeout was irrelevant

City/town Population doesn't really correlate to school enrolment either
Alexandria just under 15K and is a 5A so by comparison to FF less than 1000 people more and a class higher
There’s lots of small towns/farming communities around Alex, that didn’t have a HS when I went there in the 80s, like: Miltona, Carlos, Nelson, Villard.
Pillager Population is 531 - their school website says more than 1300 enrolled kids k-12

Yeah, lots of surrounding small towns tend to open enroll at the biggest school or they're just in that bigger town's school district.

Like out here in Hutchinson we get kids from Stewart, Cedar Mills, Brownton, and Biscay.

It's why classes go by enrollment not by population. And the further North you go it seems like the more of these bigger schools have the surround towns sending kids to their school.

When McLeod West closed, was the district dissolved and the area split between Hutch, Glencoe, and Buffalo Lake-Hector? Or is the district still there and everyone in it open enrolls to the school of their choice?

I went through Brownton recently, and they still have billboards on Hwy 212 celebrating their state championship from the early 2000s.

The other thing that perhaps wasn't said is Edina connected deep on numerous contested catches for TD's and Minnetonka had at minimum four drops on drive-changing plays down field. Kudos to Edina for swinging the momentum and not quitting after finding themselves down 28-7.

The legend is the two board members that couldn’t agree on where to build a new school due to their loyalty to their hometown ended the district. I believe everyone got to open enroll where they want between Hutchinson, Sibley East, Glenco and others.

38-0 JCC at half. Voss with 4 Rushing and 2 passing TD’s. Also a pick on defense. Eden Valley is up 5-1 in stopping 2pt conversions.

Stewart is part of Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart now. Brownton is part of GSL now.

But there are kids from both towns the open enroll and go to Hutch and for a while now for Wrestling Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart has a co-op with Hutchinson.

Ultimately the district was going under financially and there was a vote and Brownton voted yes to raise taxes to fund the district and Stewart voted no but the total votes between the two would have still resulted in passing but I guess the farmers voted it down in the end.

But I'm not from either town so may be missing something.

I know we do get so kids open enroll from both districts to Hutch and I think some open enroll to GFW too but not sure.
