2025 Minnesota High School Football Thread

It is good as far as rating formulas go. None of them are 100% accurate but if you just go look at the results of the playoffs over the last several years it's pretty accurate. Now the issue is 6A is a whole different thing and the way things work with relief section...ect kinda skews things. This is why in my examples I used AAAA-A as I think for most of the rest of the classes it's actually pretty good.

So if you don't like it for 6A, I understand that but it's not a bad formula to assist in seeding. Nobody should use any formula as the only criteria for seeding but I think it's a good piece of data to put teams in order then debate with other data to see if teams positions should be adjusted from there. You should also look at head to head and margins of victory and loss vs common opponents. However, when starting the seeding process if you order them by QRF it gives you a starting point.

I know for soccer they typically do use QRF and it works pretty well but it's not the only factor. Like teams close in QRF they usually will dig deeper into win margin and common opponents. But if there's a big gap they don't. It has come out pretty fair that way for soccer. This past season my daughter's team ended up getting a lower seed than than their QRF. They lost to the other team earlier in the year but had a higher QRF and same record but our team played a much tougher schedule. But the QRF was only like 5 points difference so the HtH overrode the 5 point difference. That seemed fair enough to me.
QRF is a bad metric to use on its own.
People will continue to use it anyways

One of the benefits of everybody makes it model is that it gets played out anyways.

Every metric is bad to use on it's own. There's no one data point that can be used on it's own and be accurate. And almost nobody is using QRF alone as seeding criteria. Just like wins alone isn't perfect. Or points differential isn't perfect. Or strength of schedule isn't perfect. But these are all things that are considered.

Like I said, I think the best use would be to use QRF to get your initial seeding. Then let coaches make cases for changes to the seedings. But for 6A where all the teams are tossed into one bracket that probably doesn't work as well. And then you have the relief section thing. 6A is kinda it's own weird thing. But I think it works for the other classes.

This is just wrong. About half of football sections straight up seed by QRF

What an awful unsportsman like conduct penalty called in OT on Orono. Absolutely terrible call.

But then Mauer throws a dime for the 2pt conversion to win it for Orono! At least the terrible call didn't end up mattering.

Orono was a team I thought could be a Darkhorse. Good defensive team so as long as the defense has a good day they have a chance.

So for those that have followed the West Metro closely this year......does Edina have what it takes to knock off Minnetonka again?

I's going to be cheering for Lakeville, one of my co-workers kids plays on that team and he was so happy after they upset MG last week. Not sure they can stop Mooreheads offense but I doubt Morehead will be able to stop their running game either. Hopefully its an exciting 52-49 game or something...

Minnetonka will be more balanced tonight vs. the regular season loss. Their QB is back, allowing Francois to play RB with some likely wildcat mixed in.

nutso 4A semi final today Orono vs Marshall. 7-7 tie at the end of regulation but should be noted Orono's TD was an impossible pass that bounced straight up from the receiver in the end zone, only to be caught by the same receiver as he hit the ground.

To OT we go. Marshall scores and hits the PAT for a relatively easy score of 14-7 and the lead. Orono QB is nearly tackled as he was going out of bounds and retreating - very nearly creating a disastrous loss, but after collecting himself just in time before going out of bounds, he heaved a pass into the middle of the end zone and it was caught. 14-13 at that point with the Orono PAT pending.

But... as the receiver excitedly collected the TD pass, he got a little over-excited and quickly spiked the ball. Sure enough, blown as a personal foul and setting Orono up for a VERY long PAT.

Orono sets up for the PAT but during a time out realizes it was probably just too long, so they come back out to go for a two point conversion, set up way out near the 20. Orono down to its last breath, thanks to the 15 yard penalty.

But, a long pass is completed in the right corner and Orono survives with a 2 pt PAT and wins the game 14-15.

That should not have been a penalty. I don't know 100% what the wording of the rule is but he more like flung the ball backwards kinda semi spike and it wasn't directed at anyone and wasn't egregious. Would have been incredibly stupid if Orono lost because of that kind of call.

Either in sections or at state. They're always in the section championship or state undefeated and lose.
I thought with new districts that they were well tested but Orono had a good matchup with them. 13-12 and 15-14. Two really good games. Interested to see Grand Rapids play.

Here’s the last play. Why are they playing press coverage there?

That is a penalty by the letter of the law but Mn doesn’t want that called especially in this situation. It’s authentic exuberance and should not be called. They overcame it.

The height of the spike is likely what got the call.

Heck of a throw and catch by the QB/WR but yeah.....D should have been way off because the play had to reach the EZ. Probably not a situation they practice all that much but basically a hail mary defense is what you want in a situation like that. Can't let the WR get behind the D.

Yeah, I was sure by letter of the rule it probably was a penalty but sometimes refs need to consider the moment. Damn near every kid in the state is going to do something like that if they make that play.

Press didn't seem like the good way to go. Give them 10 and tackle them but you can't let them get over the top under any circumstances.

I think they were tested this time but just Hutch and Rocori were all down this year. Hutch more than Rocori.

Orono is a stout defensive team, which is why I thought they might be a Darkhorse to win it all. Marshall just couldn't crack that defense in either game. Will be interesting to see the prep bowl, I have K-M as the likely opponent but you never know.

Imagine being Byron and having two teams you beat in the regular season playing for the Championship.

That's gonna sting the Marshall players/coaches for a while. Tough way to lose but well executed pass/catch by Orono
I think in the end that is a play a HS QB is probably only going to make 3 of 10 times. So they were in a spot where they can make the QB beat them or they can give a cushion and make the WR make the catch and break a tackle. Defense was all wrong though. If I remember Steiner is their go to WR and they got him 1 on 1. Maybe the safety should have been told to shade that side of the field given they have their best kid on that side so you know their play is going to be designed to get him a 1 on 1.

I didn’t watch the first game in its entirety but I say yes they certainly could.
They’ve got the better QB and are one of the best coached teams year after year, to me.

So they have a chance

I am picking Edina to win the whole thing

The regular season schedule was much tougher so I thought they would win it all.

Agree.
Strangely the passing team probably wins TOP because Lakeville may score every play

Don’t like it. Stuff that hasn’t been called all year will be called all of a sudden because of changing angles of vision
Yeah I agree that’s an argument. It really helps the back judge in passing game and punts. I don’t think it will have a huge impact on regular plays.

I couldn't believe Orono was going for 2.....it's hard to believe they thought the odds of getting the 2 point conversion were better than making a 35 yard extra point/field goal.....but they obviously knew their kicker's limitations....
