And how is this different than the last few guys MSU has hired that almost everyone around here was sure were going to do great?

Resources aren't enough and Fitz went 1-8 in the conference 3 of the last 4 years he coached. (went 6-1 in 2020) He was 11 games under .500 overall in conference at Northwestern.

Fits is a classic example of why most fan bases of non blue bloods would prefer swapping 1-8 records with 8-1 records rather that consistent 4-5, 5-4, maybe 6-3. Cats have been bad overall as numbers show but have enough time close to the top to remember the good and forget the bad.

I can’t be sure but I bet a lot of us would have taken a Rose Bowl appearance as a trade for the 5-4 type records were in now.

Fits has something to prove. I’m not so sure he will.

Totally agree. Pre-portal and to a great extent now, Northwestern keeps its players in the program and every now and then has a recruiting class that develops and puts up a stellar season (by their standards). They've been up and down, but they always play hard and smart. The consistent problem for them is landing above-average players at the skilled positions.

I've always thought Fitzgerald gets a pass from the jockocracy for some reason. Very good college player and energetic coach. Comes off as a good guy. He did get the Wildcats ranked in the Top 25 a number of times in his career, but things were bottoming out when he left.

I'm not a Kiffin fan, nor an LSU fan. Blake Baker, LSU's D-Coordinator, is getting a lot of rumors about becoming the next Tulane HC. Kiffen apparently wants him to stay, but being a HC for arguably the best G5 team is a big pull. If he travels the 90-minute drive to Tulane, I wonder how many of his recruits will follow him? Hope it's a lot.

I get it, they didn't do gud there .... but also just one year, new guy is going to take time to get his system in and such.

Also what about their OL???

I like Fitz...I think he was a very solid coach for a school that he loves. There is a reason they went after him for the hazing (I have no interest in litigating that) despite being the prodigal son. It was becoming obvious the system was peetering out and cfb was changing. Sucks cause schools like NW need coaches like that but cfb doesn't care.

MSU won't have the patience so he better hit the ground running and be squeeky clean.

Well I'd like to see LSU get screwed as well, I doubt too many kids will be interested in downgrading from the LSU scholly to Tulane.

Not trying to be a jerk, but having trouble following you here (bolded). If cfb was changing, then why would NW need a coach that isn't keeping with the changes?
 

That isnt how I meant it. Cfb changing is why NW was right to want him out (again not litigating the hazing) because he was showing signs of the system not working and they cant afford to keep losing. If this was 10 years ago they give him a couple more years based on his record and history with the school. Now they had to find a way out...

The changing nature of the sport forces teams to make rash decisions and not let coaches adapt or change. No more benefit of the doubt. Its like every school is run by message board fans like us.

Wasn't Butler the guy who would argue with fellow Dinkytown bargoers and sometimes disparage Brewster's coaching ability to said assembly?

Good news if you hope PJ is staying (most of us do)
UCLA and Arkansas both filled. Both were rumored suitors for him recently.

I think Penn State (long shot) is the only remaining major job he might consider

I'd much rather have a degree from Tulane vs LSU, not even in the same league... But yes, the LSU football program is a bigger stage.

Well that depends, are you applying for a "business" job in the Baton Rouge area. ;)

Kidding aside, I do wonder if that gives you a leg up for some entry level stuff - wanting to hire a former athlete of the primo sport in your area.
