2024-2025 Gopher Soccer

Really? I'd rather get blown out by Brown than get shutout by Wisconsin. Way to show up ladies.

The Gophers drop their first match of the season
MADISON - The University of Minnesota soccer team (8-1-1, 2-1-0 B1G) lost to the Wisconsin Badgers (5-2-2, 1-1-1 B1G) on Sunday afternoon 1-0 at McClimon Soccer Complex.

Despite the loss, the Golden Gophers led the Badgers in shots (16-6) and corners (18-4). Senior Khyah Harper took five chances on the day, while redshirt freshman Caroline Birdsell took four. Harper and midfielder Evelyn Calhoon were the only two Gophers that registered a shot on goal.

The Badgers scored in the 15th minute off a corner kick. Wisconsin delivered a ball to Erin Connolly who headed it up into the six yard box. Peighton Steffen took advantage of the bobbling ball and finished.

In the second half, Minnesota saw a number of dangerous chances off set pieces and corner kicks. Despite the strong offensive effort, the Gophers were unable to finish.

Minnesota continues its season on the road as it travels to No. 25 USC and RV (receiving votes) UCLA. The Gophers face the Trojans on Thursday at 8 p.m. and Bruins on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT, respectively.

Gophers started off hot, scoring goals and playing defense. They are falling hard back to earth.

ST. PAUL - After a hard fought 90 minutes of play, the University of Minnesota soccer team tied the Northwestern Wildcats, 1-1, on Friday night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The Golden Gophers (8-2-3, 2-2-2 B1G) grab a point at home against Northwestern (5-6-3, 0-4-2).

Sophia Boman scored the lone Minnesota goal of the match, while Paige Kalal assisted her off a set piece play. Sophia Romine tallied four shots on the evening followed by Khyah Harper, who had three. Six other Gophers recorded one shot, totaling 13 on the night.

In the 11th minute of play, Minnesota was awarded a free kick outside of the 18-yard box. Kalal stepped up to take the opportunity and delivered it into the six-yard box. Boman used her head to push the ball past the keeper to put the Gophers on the board.

Minnesota came out of the locker room with the lead until the 48th minute. Northwestern's Caterina Regazzoni found an opportunity for the Wildcats and created a chance for Kennedy Roesch, who finished to tie the game, 1-1.

Minnesota looks ahead to next week for another road trip at No. 7 Ohio State and No. 15 Penn State. The Gophers face the Buckeyes on Thursday at 6 p.m., and the Nittany Lions on Sunday at 12 p.m., CT. Both matches can be streamed live on B1G+

Since the B1G opener win the team has gone 0-2-2, given how they are playing right now I don't see another win down the road. So much potential only to be squandered by a few missed plays.

The win is the first top ten win since 2015 and first top 25 win since 2019
COLUMBUS - Picking up its first top ten victory since 2015, the University of Minnesota soccer team defeated No. 8 Ohio State, 3-2, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Thursday evening. The Golden Gophers (9-2-3, 3-2-2 B1G) hand the eighth-ranked Buckeyes (9-2-3, 4-1-2 B1G) their first conference and home loss of the year.

Offensively, Minnesota was led by senior Khyah Harper who finished her 14th and 15th goals of 2024. Harper has now tallied five multi-goal games this season and is the nation's stand alone goals leader.

Sophomore Kate Childers finished her second career goal of the evening in the second half. Evelyn Calhoon and Paige Kalal also grabbed a point each, assisting Harper's first and Childers' goals, respectively.

In 2015 Minnesota defeated No. 4 Penn State, 1-0. Tonight's win also marks the first top 25 win in five seasons, when the Gophers beat No. 14 NC State, 1-0.

Harper got the scoring started 18 minutes into the match. Calhoon delivered a ball down the right sideline to Harper's feet to finish.

It would be Harper again to score in the 36th minute. After a ball was sent down from the back line, Harper received it and took a shot that was blocked by the Buckeyes' keeper. Harper collected the rebound to find the back of the net.

Minnesota ended the first half ahead of No. 8 Ohio State, 2-0.

The Gophers extended their lead by a third goal in the 57th minute. Childers finished her second goal of the season off a cross from Kalal

Three minutes later, Ohio State would cut down Minnesota's lead. A Buckeyes team goal came in the 60th minute followed by another in the 64th by forward Kailyn Dudukovich.

Despite the late Buckeyes' goals, Minnesota held onto their lead to grab the 3-2 wi

Gophers with a 3-2 win over #8 Ohio State in Columbus
Huge win. Last night was a sports rollercoaster for me. Had the Gophers on my phone. We were up 1-0. Went outside to play some baseball with my son and came back in to find us up 3-0. Looked away from my phone to make my kids a late dinner, and saw we had given up two quick ones. Then, pissed off my wife by bringing my phone to put my son to bed and she caught us watching the end of an instant classic Lynx game on my phone. Plus, the Wild won their opener. Yesterday was the most un-Minnesota sports day ever.

Since the B1G opener win the team has gone 0-2-2, given how they are playing right now I don't see another win down the road. So much potential only to be squandered by a few missed plays.

You're always silent unless things are going poorly.

Almost gave it away after leading 3-0. Let's see if they can duplicate it against Penn State. There how about that?😁
Hopefully we beat PSU, but if told told me we'd come away with 1 win out of those two games before the OSU game, I'd have taken it. I don't care about almost lowing a lead any more than I care about almost winning. It's competitive sports, you either win or lose (or, in some sports, tie). Style points and moral victories don't count for much.

With 8:33 remaining, PSU finished a cross with a header for a 3-2 victory over Minnesota

Despite a two goal rally, the Golden Gophers fell to the 20th ranked Nittany Lions
UNIVERSITY PARK - A late goal from the Nittany Lions in the 82nd minute made the difference as the University of Minnesota soccer team (9-3-3, 3-3-2 B1G) fell, 3-2, at No. 20 Penn State (11-3-2, 5-2-1 B1G) at Jeffrey Field on Sunday afternoon.

As a team, the Golden Gophers outshot the Nittany Lions 13-11 (8-5 S.O.G.). Senior Khyah Harper led the way for Minnesota, scoring one goal and dishing out three shots on net. Graduate Sophia Romine followed behind, scoring a goal unassisted and tallying two shots.

Penn State started out hot, scoring 55 seconds into the match. Kaelyn Wolfe found the bottom right of the goal off an assist from Julia Raich and Bella Ayscue.

The Gophers answered back quickly in the 11th minute. After a Caroline Birdsell shot got pushed wide by the Penn State keeper, Minnesota earned a corner kick. Sophomore Paige Kalal delivered an opportunity to Harper, who scored her 16th goal of the season.

Five minutes later, Romine gave Minnesota the lead on her own. The graduate midfielder earned possession and dribbled down the field to score 25 yards out. The goal marks her fourth of the season.

In the 31st minute, Penn State's Kaitlyn MacBean would tie up the match. Raich found MacBean, to notch her second assist of the game. The Gophers and Nittany Lions were tied 2-2 at the half.

The second half stayed even between the Gophers and Nittany Lions, both teams keeping up the offensive pressure. With eight minutes left in the game, Olivia Damico scored her first goal of the season off a cross from Jordan Fusco to seal the win for Penn State.

Minnesota returns home this Thursday to host Maryland at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium at 7 p.m. CT. The match can also be streamed live on B1G+

The Gophers earn a bid to the Big Ten Tournament
ST. PAUL -
Earning a berth to the Big Ten Tournament, the Minnesota Golden Gophers (11-3-3, 5-3-2 B1G) defeated the Indiana Hoosiers (6-8-2, 1-8-1 B1G) 3-0 at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Khyah Harper's game-winner marked the sixth of the season for the forward. The accomplishment matches a Minnesota season record that hasn't been touched since Simone Kolander (2015). With one more game-winning goal this season, Harper will be the Maroon and Gold's standalone leader in the category.

Harper, Evelyn Calhoon, and Sophia Boman all found the back of the Hoosiers' net. Harper led the offensive drive with seven shots followed by Boman who had four. Assists came from Sophia Romine and Harper. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Martin picked up the shutout with one save.

In the 13th minute, Romine earned possession and delivered a long ball to Harper's feet. Harper broke through Indiana's backline and finished a bar-down goal to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead in the first half.

It would be Harper in the 56th minute who assisted Calhoon. Calhoon put the ball past the keeper, scoring her first goal of the season.

In the 84th minute, Harper was fouled by an Indiana defender. Boman stepped up and converted the penalty kick to a third goal, handing the Gophers the 3-0 win.

Minnesota returns home next Sunday to face No. 14 Iowa. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. CT at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
