In fairness, recent success usually indicates that a program is doing well overall. But clearly not always, as Wayzata was horrible this season.

For sure. But you shouldn’t take 2019 into account when seeding 2023 high school playoffs.
You should only take 2023 into account

They should’ve only dropped to 5a IMO but I guess winning is more important than competitiveness for them. Which makes sense because they need to recruit students to survive as a school

They’re not good enough to get there in 5A. Their would be section is good.

Would be nice for other teams in the section to have the option of playing 4a

Totino by size is 4a but there is a reason they had opted up two classes for a decade. Pretty soft of them to not even opt up one. Fundraising dollars must have been drying up without the state tourney appearances

It’s all basketball focused now.
 

9M to 5A should do cross over at 16 teams left based on the predetermined section pairings.

You literally dug yourself 6 feet underground going on and on about the 2000 Purdue Boilermakers somehow proving the 2024 Gophers schedule wouldnt be tougher, and now 3 years ago is irrelevant.

Would be good. That’s how 6a started on current path.
Would only increase travel for 1 game for 48 teams

You think it is easier to win the big ten in 2023 than it would’ve been in 2000?

I said it would be about as tough in 2024 as it is in 2023. Feel free to disagree.
If you consider UCLA and USC unwinnable games. It is definitely tougher.

I'm surprised Owatonna did not bid on a State Quarterfinal game. Maybe it was completed too late for this year or they just did not want the hassle in Year 1.

IMO, MN Football Hub is an easier resource site than MSHL just to find the Dates, Times and Locations. Half the games (14) are on Thursday with 7 each on Friday and then Saturday. 5A gets the spotlight on Saturday, which makes sense because their Semis are also on the following Saturday.

Bummer for those that have to travel on a Thursday but I presume that's to allow the teams to get a full week to prep for the games at the Zygi Dome.

I don’t think many teams want to host because of all the labor you need to host well.
And if you’re a program that expects to be still alive, some of those laborers are busy with the local team.

Yeah, probably true.

New Prague has seemed to embrace it, they host Cannon Falls vs Triton in 2A this year. I have happened to see a couple games there before that have drawn well, concessions probably made some solid bucks. Mayo too, but they are fortunate to get Caledonia to bring in solid numbers.

They also host Section 2 playoff volleyball and basketball, and those events always seem to draw well.

Many factors. Add in that it's November and many schools don't have restroom/concessions facilities where the running water is still functioning.

It's typically the same schools every year that host.

Owatonna may have wanted to see how the facility operated before hosting state as well.

Just a side note on Owatonna's concessions and restrooms, they are actually attached to the new HS building, separate from the actual football stadium/stands. The restroom has a back entrance right across from the gym, and for the concessions they have service windows to the outside and inside.

Cool design to serve for dual purposes. Quite efficient.

Hey Maxy - a referee-related question.

it's become common these days for radio and TV announcers to refer to penalty flags as "laundry."

as in "there's laundry on the field" when a flag is thrown.

I tend to think of "laundry" as things you wash in a washing machine - clothing, sheets, towels, etc.

SO - do officials wash their penalty flags in the washing machine, allowing them to be classified as "laundry?" Do they wash penalty flags at all?

(I was watching an MIAC game on the video-stream Saturday, and the announcers - I assume they were students - called it 'laundry' on every penalty - prompting me to ponder this question.....)

I've never washed a flag in 20+ years. The weighted material in the ball of the flag would likely expand or harden. I use them until they go bad and buy a new one.
 

Weird schedule quirk in 6A that I am pretty sure was the case last year as well. Rosemount/Centennial is on Thursday night and the winner plays the following Thursday at US Bank.

You would think their opponent in that game would be in the other 6A game being played on Thursday but that isn’t the case. South/East Ridge play Friday with the winner playing the following Thursday. That makes no sense to me, does anyone have any clue why they would set it up that way?

so, you're assuming the MSHSL uses logic and common sense in making its decisions?

seriously, if I had to guess, I would say it's all based on the brackets and is pre-arranged well before the teams are known. with the MSHSL, it often comes down to "this is the way we do it, and we do it that way."

with the quarter-finals, it might (speculating here) also come down to which schools are willing to host and which night that fields are available.

It's been this way before. There are a number of things that play into it. Stillwater and Lakeville South are both playing and both hosting games this week, so that probably is the answer and they are on opposite sides of the bracket.

They also have used this set up on the days the classes play for a few years.

Is it always the case that a team can't play at their home field - hence Stillwater hosting a game the same night their team is playing at Park Center?
 

I also thing 6A was set up in way so they can scout each other by being on different nights.

I agree it would make more sense to have the same side of the bracket playing on the same night
