Payne and Garcia are solid options. I don't consider them "stars"... Best players on our team... Yes

And do answer my own question: Battle scored 20 against Indiana and 14 against Nebraska. So you can't pin those losses on him. He did no-show the Wisconsin home game. I don't think that equates to "lost us so many others."

Payne will be a star this year. Garcia while not that productive the first half of the year, really came on later and made all Big Ten 3rd team I believe. That's borderline star- top 15 player in the conference. He'll be better this year. So yeah- I agree with you and that's why I think we will be much better than 3 Big Ten wins.

Howie predicts a loss/"game is over" after nearly every made bucket by the opponent. I have to admit that last year he was mostly right- but pessimists won the day last year. I think this year will be better.

The addition by subtraction talk is definitely a bit over the top but replacing the 22-23 version of Battle is not impossible either.

Battle was the best option we had at the 3 last season but he had a horrible year for the most part. His shooting percentages were poor, he didn't get to the line, and he was not good on defense.

The 21-22 version of Battle was a different story, the 22-23 version was pretty disappointing for most of the year outside of a few games where he played really well.

Battle was the best shooter we had when he took good shots. Unfortunately those were far too few in the overall mix and he shot 30% which was near the bottom of our shooters. 21-22 Battle was solid. Also- he is not a good defensive player or rebounder for his size.

Something was amiss with him, and I think people owe it to him or to anyone to recognize that these players aren't robots or equipment; they're people. On senior day, Coach Johnson somewhat cryptically made reference to some difficulties Battle had encountered, and I don't think he would have said anything like that if there was nothing to it. My hope is that he regains his form and has a big year next year with the Buckeyes and a long pro career. He's a good dude and will always have a warm spot in my heart.

Ben hates having too many players because he doesn't feel he can keep them all happy. If there is one thing I dislike about Ben it is his not using all of his scholarships. We've had no depth these last two years and players have had to play with injuries which just delays their healing. It is beyond stupid to not use all the scholarships on players who can help the team in some way.

Good stuff Bad. I was always in Battles camp as he played the game the right way and was a solid UM student/athlete.

He’s not a bad guy, but he really didn’t play the right way. He was very inconsistent with his effort on defense, rarely contesting shots effectively, and was often pretty lazy off the ball. Offensively he did not move well without the ball, took selfish shots, etc. That is not playing the right way.
 

Battle’s leaving confirms what most everyone already knew. Team leadership is lacking and not benefiting the athletes.

Good stuff Bad. I was always in his camp as he played the game the right way and was a great rxamole in414 area
 


Ryan James write up on Shemari Allen reading Gophers In conversation but he’s heavy favorite to move back home to North Carolina for school.

One of the bigger disappointments of the whole season last year was Battle not looking anything like the player he was in 21-22.

Hopefully the change of scenery helps him rediscover his game and get back closer to the player he is obviously capable of being.

It was just strange. I could tell right away in his first game the previous year that he was going to be an offensive force, which he was, and I could tell in his first game last year that something was off. My hope at that time was that he was still working his way back from his injury/surgery and that he'd regain his form, but he never did. I don't think it was as much him playing a different position as it was simply him not playing as well period. This next season will be the tie breaker, I guess.
 

So even though he’s likely headed back to Carolinas for school, this first dunk on his highlight video is worth a look see. What if…

Yes, will be interesting to see. As I have shared before, I think much of his success the first year was playing off of Willis. He provided open looks for Battle, and the other team routinely put the best perimeter defender on Peyton. This past year Battle drew the best defender typically, and he couldn't do anything with that. My disappointment with him this year was his inconsistent/poor performance on defense - it's really just effort.

There's something to this, but it's not a complete explanation. He missed open shots he would have made in his sleep before. Hey, he wouldn't be the first player in history who regressed.

I like! Shot 47% from 3 point range on almost 4 attempts per game. 1.7 steals per game. Led a winning team. Close the deal!

One negative- he turns it over at an alarming rate - 4 turnovers per game- so he takes too many risks. Howard did play some pretty high scoring games so lots of possessions.
