Sparta struggling at Northwestern. If we're not careful the Gophers are gonna be the patsy of the league.
 

Anybody watching Nebraska and Wisconsin. Nebraska leading 10-5 with 8 minutes to go in 1st half.

UW started 2-17 but because they play great defense found themselves down on 10 and now have a 15 point lead.

i don't see why that's necessarily and explanation in purest sense of this game as I watched Nebraska clang multiple bricks on open shots as well. I'm not disagreeing they play hard, but Nebraska did themselves no favors with their own god awful shooting

Because during UW;s poor shooting stretch Nebraska shot a much higher % and the UW defense kept them in touch and then destroyed them. The point is Great defense can keep you in games.

I mean that I totally agree with. Just was saying that in this particular game, I don't know if it was WIs great defense as much as Nebraska missing some open shots (obviously some of this is also WIs defense). Extremely ugly first half for both teams. That's all.

Just disagree about the game we both saw, no big deal. Just grading them on posture,position, challenge, not reaching, helping, blocking out.

I agree, I would say it was more Nebraska’s inept offensive play rather than great defense by Wisconsin. I am not saying Wisconsin did not play good defense but Nebraska’s shooting was pretty poor.

Good teams usually beat bad teams. Wisconsin is good. They played OK and beat a bad team. Just how it works.

Very true. They have also made many good and great teams look bad. Great defense makes many teams look bad. Pitino Sr. has talked about this in press conferences when some of his great teams were dismantled by great defense.

No doubt. I just think wisco buys in. They don’t have greet athletes or length or anything. Just try hard and work together. Just have to focus on teaching it daily.

They built it into the culture, they recruit to it. They identify it early in looking for it, who kids played for. And yes, they practice it a great deal of time. You will not play if you will not defend. They have had guys that i do not like , Davison for example . But they had guys like Mike Kelley who just devoured the other teams best player on off the scale effort, instincts and knowledge .That group set the tone and a freshman that does not buy in will not earn his way with upperclassmen. I do not cheer for them but i really respect how far they take it with not great talent but high skill, high IQ and team execution. Hard core hoops junkies and coaches marvel at it. The group we have now can do really special things if they develop that mental toughness.I crave for that here.

Agreed. This gopher group has so much potential defensively. Tons of length and athleticism. Even Mashburn who is smaller should be able to get into someones chest and defend. He is strong for a freshman. I hate watching the gophers play defense a lot of the time

Could you imagine the gophers running that trap that St. Louis ran against us? Gach, Gabe, Ihnen, Williams. Carr isn't super long but neither were their guards. I've had this press/trap fetish since Pitino got here and we've very rarely seen anything.

Trust me when I say we share the fetish. He has had some really long athletes and they just play shitty defense. I’m not looking for 40 minutes of hell but I’d love to see it.

Now that we have an actual bench, I would love it. Pitino seems to have zero inclination to do so though....
 

NW up early on Indiana in Bloomington. They're looking like they will be a very tough out this year and very much like that Mich St win was a sign of things to come

Collins needs a good season and sounds like he is going to get one.
 

NW beats Indiana. Remember, they are a last minute meltdown against Pitt from being undefeated right now. Clearly going to be a tough out this year.

If I remember right, RP came to Mn saying he wanted to press and play pressure D. I think he tried some the first year and gave it up.
 


It will be interesting to see if the home/road free throw disparity is the same this year as usual
