2019 recruiting

Thanks for putting that together. I wonder who will be the post play guru?

> I wonder who will be the post play guru?

One can hope that Lindsay will invite Syl https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvia_Fowles and Rebekkah https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebekkah_Brunson to hang out with the team during practice, early and often.

Noting that 46% of the 2019-20 team is six-foot-two or taller, that kinda supports claims by various posters that Lindsay is going after tall/agile/fast post players (along with great-shooting/agile/fast guards).

It only makes sense to go tall and athletic to compete against upper tier teams like last year's Oregon Duck team with 8 out of 13 players 6'1" to 6' 6" tall. Their guards are 5' 9" to 5' 11". They only have fast athletic Guards and Forwards.

I would suspect that Lindasy Whalen will look recruit to faster athletic defensive minded athletes. Expect the Gophers to also go even taller in succeeding recruiting classes.

The key word in conjunction with post players is "agile". Gophers were tall enough last year..."agile" was the problem.

If you look at Oregon's lineup that beat the Gophers in the NCAAs last year, not only are they tall and loaded, they have a program changer in 5' 11" Sophomore Point Guard Sabrina Ionescu from CA. She was National High School Player of the Year coming out of high school and played for US National Teams like Paige Bueckers has.

This is how Paige Bueckers can transform the Gophers Women's Basketball for years to come.

She can go to a powerhouse like Notre Dame. That would be the easy rout. But, if she decides to stay home and help transform and win the National Championship as a Gopher that would be really special. It will be more satisfying. Her family and the entire State will treasure her forever and quite possibly may reverse the trend of top instate kids leaving.

She will inspire generations of young girls like Lindsay Whalen did.

That would be truly special.

If Lindsay Whalen brings forth the very best out of her current group of players and make it into the NCAA Tournament, top recruits will start to notice. They'd be watching how she coaches up Kenisha Bell to realize her aspirations for the WNBA or foreign pro basketball.

And number five.

As fanfromthevalley noted, it's nice to have a drama-free signing day. Anyone else notice that UConn and Baylor are missing from the Top 25 recruiting classes.

That's because the big signings haven't been announced yet.

Gophers coach Lindsay Whalen arrived just in time to watch one of her future players, Sara Scalia, lead Stillwater over Lakeville South 66-40.Scalia had 24 points and created chances for the other Ponies.

Whalen and Gophers assistant coach Kelly Roysland stayed to watch St. Michael-Albertville face Lakeville North, a duel between two of the state’s best junior guards in the Knights’ Kenzie Kramer and the Panthers’ Lauren Jensen.

Jensen scored 24 points, but the creativity of Kramer, along with the standout efforts from guards Tessa Johnson and Jadyn Hanson, helped St. Michael-Albertville prevail 74-53. Kramer finished with 16 points.

“I played with her in AAU and it’s always fun when you go play someone you know,” Kramer said of Jensen.

Whalen and Roysland-Curry were there scouting several players!

Both MN born and bred and both know how important it is to get the best home grown kids in the State. They've got a great place to scout within the seven county metro area alone. Many D1 players that attract national attention. Wait until Spring when they go outstate.

Whalen being from Hutchinson, and Roysland-Curry from tiny Fosston (between Bemidji and Grand Forks) know what it is like to dream about being a Golden Gopher.

I am impressed. How they will scout outstate MN? Will we ever see Whalen at Rochester, Fargo/Moorehead, Duluth/Cloquet, Bemidji area, etc...? I guess the big focus is in the Twin Cities Metro. Lots of kids play AAU basketball and other leagues today.

I can't wait to see the MN Gophers Caravan this Spring/Summer with Whalen, Fleck, Motzko, Pitino, and others.

For some reason, Iggy didn’t highlight the part about Bueckers. There’s a few people around here that are interested in her.

Before the game, Royals superstar guard Paige Bueckers sat along the wall and kept her teammates entertained by lip-syncing and dancing to the music in her headphones.

When the game started, Bueckers did her dancing on the court, toying with the Lightning by slashing to the basket, hitting off-balance pull-up shots and draining long-range bombs, leading Hopkins to a 75-48 victory.

Eastview led 11-10 in the first half before Bueckers took over. She scored six straight points, then began feeding her teammates as Hopkins went on a 26-5 run. The game was essentially over after that.

Bueckers had 25 points for Hopkins (4-0), which earned its third victory of the young season over a highly touted foe, having already beaten Stillwater and Lakeville North.

As far as “Kenzie” goes, it’s good to hear that she’s creative. I wanna know if she still has the sick handles she did back in eighth grade.

Lindsay Whalen fan. Check.

Former Top 100 recruit (#36) Grace Berg is transferring from Mizzou. She's been removed from the Mizzou roster already, but Hoopgurlz had her listed as a 6'0'' wing player. She averaged 3.8 points, 1.7 rebounds in 13 minutes as a freshman.

Carly and Whalen just followed her on her Twitter.

Just looking at who Grace has followed on twitter, id say its very very likely shes going to Drake.

FWIW: Shemara Williams has reopened her recruiting after Carolyn Kieger left for Penn State. The Gophers were in Williams' top ten but not in her final six. Plus, Fiveout was not impressed by her play.

Maybe she’ll consider Penn St?

She’s a Milwaukee girl, so she was looking to stay home. Maybe Minneapolis is close enough to home? Of course, Holmes might be the starter after Brunson leaves.

ALSO CONSIDERED
Arizona State Sun Devils, Georgia Lady Bulldogs, Kentucky Wildcats, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Virginia Cavaliers, West Virginia

The official announcement:

The Minnesota women's basketball team has added a member to its 2019-20 recruiting class as Maryia "Masha" Adashchyk has signed a National Letter of Intent, head coach Lindsay Whalen announced Wednesday.

A 5'11 guard from Minsk, Belarus, Adashchyk has spent the last two seasons playing for Panola College in Carthage, Texas. She averaged 12.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.4 steals per contest in her two seasons and helped the Fillies reach the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship in her freshman campaign.

Adashchyk, who is the first player from Belarus to sign with the Gophers, shot 48.6 percent from the field, 38.6 percent on 3-pointers and 79.2 percent on free throws in her two-year career.
