2018 College Football Head Coach Fire and Hire Thread

I agree. CSU has worsened every year

They were 7-6 for each of his first 3 years and is the only coach, other than Sonny Lubick to have led them to Bowl Games in 3 consecutive seasons. He was extended to 2022 last December and if fired, CSU would have owed him $8 million. This season, they went 3-9 while he dealt with health issues. They were not a good football team this season but he’s not going anywhere IMO.

I bet they had harsher opinions for how Kaler/Coyle handled it. They probably didn't love how Claeys handled it either, but anyone with a fully-functioning brain knows he had little choice but to support his players.

Lol

Kliff Kingsbury, former Head Coach at Texas Tech, to be named Offensive Coordinator at USC.

You honestly think AD's and presidents at other schools will side with a coach that was publicly insubordinate? Really?

You think they'll think it's OK if they suspend a player and Claeys publicly implies the player shouldn't be suspended???

Whether Kaler/Coyle handled it correctly or not, from an outside view as an AD or president Claeys came across as someone they can't trust. And when in his last interview I've seen on the subject, he still doesn't understand the U was legally obligated to do the investigation and he is still claiming it was unjustified, it really makes him look like a liability, not to mention pretty thick.

I think a lot of other ADs are smart and realize that Claeys was fired long before the scandal happened, due to a new AD wanting to hire his own guy. They know that Claeys was hung out to dry and saying that he supported his players while knowing you are a lame duck coach is not the same as insubordination. They also know the AD could have handled things better and not put the coach in such a difficult situation. They also know that Claeys was a 1st year head coach and that if mistakes were made on his part, he can learn from them (failing=growing).

If you consider 11-18 over 3 years remarkable I have a bridge Id like to sell you

His predecessor finished 1-34 over 3 years, and almost all of the games were non-competitive blowouts. In that context, 11-18 is damn near a miracle.

Denny Green was named Big Ten Coach of the Year after going 3-8 (2-7) at Northwestern. They were 1-31-1 in the 3 years before he arrived.

I knew someone was going to post that. To each their own but I still think "remarkable" is too strong a word for winning 1/3 of your games over three seasons. I'm sure the line to coach the Charlotte 49ers wasn't long though. Beggars can't be choosers. Will Healy isnt the next Dennis Green

Sure, when you remove context, it doesn't look impressive.

2015 (year before he was hired): 0-11, were outscored 429-133 (average game score: 39-12)
2017 (2nd year): 8-4, outscored opponents 327-297 (average game score: 27-25)

In two years, he managed to go from 0 to 8 wins, while simultaneously increasing his team's scoring by 15 points per game and lowering the opponents' scoring by 14 points per game. A swing of 29 points per game in two seasons is unbelievable.

I'm sure the line to coach the Charlotte 49ers wasn't long though. Beggars can't be choosers.

It's an FBS job. There are only 130 in the country. The theoretical talent pool is every Division II head coach, every FCS head coach, and many FBS coordinators/position coaches. They had plenty of candidates from which to choose.

You can't possibly know that.

How dare I have an opinion and point of view. As always dpo we all very impressed by you and your elite posts.

Nope, and I never said that. I said that they would think that how Kaler and Coyle handled the situation was much worse than how Claeys handled the situation. Proportionality.

Nope and I never said that. I said that they would never put a coach into the position that they put Claeys. They probably don't like how Claeys handled it, but I'd be shocked if they wouldn't be more appalled with how Coyle and Kaler handled it.

Whether Kaler/Coyle handled it correctly or not, from an outside view as an AD or president Claeys came across as someone they can't trust. This full of so much.

(1) I've never seen where he said that, but that is really beside the point. If you're referring to his statement regarding the suspensions (something like "I understand why some of the players were suspended, but I don't understand why the additional six are suspended"), well, that is so different from not understanding the U was legally obligated to do an investigation.
(2) My point wasn't that an AD would love Claeys, I'm saying that Kaler/Coyle butchered this situation completely. So I would imagine that in their judgement of the two sets of groups (Claeys vs. Coyle/Kaler), most people would come to the conclusion that Kaler and Coyle messed this thing up worse.

Note - this isn't a rip on PJ. I would prefer PJ Fleck to Tracy Claeys as our coach.

Locksley to Maryland

How do you all feel about this? I feel like Matt Canada was dealt a crummy hand.

Pros:
This should help lock down the “DMV” area for Maryland. Locksley has strong ties to the high school community there. Also, was able to learn from Saban for 3 years

Cons:
Terrible previous tenure as a head coach
Has some off-field issues from his time at New Mexico

Be careful dissing his previous head coaching results, remember Bill Belichick, didn't exactly light the world on fire at Cleveland in his first HC position. I'm not saying that Locksley will be successful just don't assume he won't be either.

As a Gopher fan, I love the Locksley hire.

Maryland football is like the 1990s Baltimore Orioles.

Willing to spend lots of money but some of the personal decisions make you scratch your head.

Think about this:

If he goes 6-30 in 3 years and doesn’t punch out any of his assitants he will have doubled his success on the field and infinitely improced it off the field compared to his last head job

Female escort seeking Hugh Freeze reported to be the next Head Coach for the Liberty University Fightin' Falwells. Since the AD at Liberty was dumped by Baylor after the sex scandal there, Freeze will fit right in.

I like Klieman, I think that'd be a great hire for them.

Kind of surprising that the best Bohl could do is Wyoming (where he's been mediocre at best), and Klieman might be getting a Power 5 job - particularly since Bohl was older, more experienced, and more accomplished in 2013 compared to where Klieman is now.
