2014 2-deep

I have faith in Kill bringing in a JuCo Wr and having them succeed. Outside of Gillum and Harris (who was late in Kill's first class, so I really don't hold it against him), Kill has done a great job identifying talent and having that talent contribute.

2013
Campbell - showed flashes and has athleticism
Hinojosa - RS
Wilson - big success

2012
Baltazar - not great but contributed
BBC - was playing like the real deal before injury
Fruechte - has contributed and started
Gillum - miss
R Johnson - starter and arguable our best run stopping DT
Shabazz - had some pretty solid moments and contributed

2011
Harris - miss
Rabe - decent to solid
Moulton - played some, not great

(missing anyone??)

I do agree that we shouldn't be hoping/depending on a JuCo to come in, but if Kill brings in a JuCo wide receiver, I have confidence that they will contribute and help the program take another step forward.

Malcom Moulton (Sp?) was another WR miss.

This chart makes me really happy. Amazed at how quickly Kill has been able to amass depth. The D-backfield, offensive line, and running back look especially solid for the next few seasons. And it looks like they have a good plan set for linebacker.

At the moment, the only holes I can spot:

1)Defensive Line: Looks a little thin, especially in the middle. Replacing Hagemen wont be easy.

2)The Passing Game: They have the pieces. Hopefully our youth at WR and QB can develop over the off season.

3)Fullback: Others have mentioned this. Interesting to see how Henry is replaced.

I seem to recall Gabe Mezzenga filling in fairly admirably in spot duty when Henry was dinged up?

The way some people here are looking at JuCo players says a lot about the depth of our pessimism at the GopherHole. Instead of looking at the misses how about looking at the successes. I do realize that under Brewster there were problems but for god sakes he is gone and we now have a new coach who seems to be doing okay with JuCos, so get over it! By the way, signing JuCos has a definite advantages when it comes to balancing out classes and positions, solving a short term problem and doing it without tying up a scholarship for four plus years (less risk).

FTR my concern is on finding a JuCo WR. I think we have done great with JuCo players and I get the balancing aspect. I'm not keen on doing it with WRs as I think that is tougher for any team. Maybe I'm wrong, but I have always had that perspective.

My guess is that Gabe Mezzenga gets a lot of Mike Henry's playing time. He played a good deal this year on special teams and came in for certain packages when Henry was out. He'll be a RS Senior and almost 23 by next season, so he's physically mature to take that beating.

Edit: I see Ogee mentioned him above.

Did Mezzenga graduate?

Yes but still had eligibility left but decided to quit the team.
My understanding is that Mezzenga got a quality job offer and after talking it of with Coach Kill decide to pursue it. Saying he quit the team is a bad way to put it.

Exactly! Now if you want to say that Dr.Don quit the Predict The Score team you would be right but on the other hand, he also had a better offer, i.e. no more grief.
