One of the things tubby is known for is his tendency to sub 5 guys at a time. What do you guys think our starters and 2nd team will be? I was thinking maybe-

Starters- Dre, Austin, Big Mo, Rodney, Mbakwe
2nd team- Welch, Coleman, EE, Oto, Ellenson

Thoughts?

I would start EE over Big Mo. I'd put Ingram on the second team over Ellenson. Considering Tubby's love for long, athletic defenders, I would count on Buggs getting some PT too.

But with Ellenson off the second team, that really only leaves one perimeter scorer on the floor.

I think Welch, EE and Coleman will share the 5th spot starter with Mo developing off the bench.

I think Elliot will start. Perimeter shooting is not what this staff recruits. Ellenson isn't a good outside shooter at this point anyhow. Much as it might surprise most Maverik may play a bigger role than most think. By that I mean 10,15 minutes a game. He is a player at times you think he should be at a lower level and then sometimes you watch him and he does some good things. I'm not sure where Oto fits in. There doesn't appear to be minutes for him.

Welch can score from the perimeter. I'd like to see if Coleman develops a little outside game as well. Oto's shooting ability has been touted too. With the frontline of Big Mo and Ingram on the 2nd team, Oto can slide out to the wing.

I think Oto's shooting will improve. Austin Hollins shot 13-50 for 26% from 3 in his freshman year and went 51-138 for 37% this season according to ESPN. I know his shooting ability was touted when he came in, but didn't exactly set the world on fire from beyond the arc in his freshman season, but he significantly improved this year. I think Oto could show similar improvement. His shooting ability was spoken highly of as well. He made fewer attempts than Austin did as a freshman, but shot 11-41 for 26.8%, slightly better than Austin did. I believe Oto will contribute next year, maybe not quite as much as Austin did this year, but I doubt he will simply be lost in the shuffle.

I use to think that EE would start because of how well he played down the stretch last year. But now I worry that if EE, Trevor and Rodney are on the court at the same time if all that size will clug the middle and hinder Trevor and Rodney. If Rodney becomes a shooter this season it won't matter as much, but we can't rely on that yet. Would rather have Welch or Coleman take that spot in the starting lineup at the start of the season.

I think (and am hopeful) that since Tubby quit the line changes last year when they were successful that he will continue to play a rotation of 8 or so.

I think:
Dre (lock), Mbakwe (lock), Rodney (lock), Austin (near lock) and a mixture of EE and Mo (interchangeable pretty much).

Off the bench Welch, Coleman, Oto (when need scoring), Ingram (for muscle) and Mav (need PG, he is a junior), but not at once but rather 1 or 2 at a time like other teams do.

Buggs and Wally should redshirt unless Tubby sees meaningful minutes for them.

Problem is that while EE is likely better han Mo right now, he's basically a poor mans Mbakwe in that he's also just a banger. since Trevor and EE are our only real interior players in terms of rebounding and defense you don't wan to have to play them together a ton. That said I bet Trevor plays a good 8-15 mns a night at C with Rodney at the 4 and likely in crunch time as well a lot with the Hollins boys and either Joe or Welch

I may be in the minority here but I like the idea of starting the game small with Andre, Austin, Joe, Rodney, and Trevor. If you can run on the opponent to start the true bigs should have more room to work inside due to fatigue of the opponents bigs.

I hope Elliot and Mo split 30 minutes a game.

Good post. If Oto can improve the 3pt shooting percentage he will be a valuable asset.

There were times where Joe looked great and there were times when he seemed lost. He was a freshman last year. I think he takes the biggest step this year and gets major minutes whether as a starter or 6th man. Tubby will go with his hockey line changes early in the season but as 6 or 7 best emerge I think he will not employ it as much during the Big Ten season and beyond.

That's your seven man rotation, with Mo and Oto getting some minutes.

Mav will get some minutes out of necessity.

CONCERNS:

Health/conditioning of Mo.

Coleman needs to develop ball-handling and outside shot.

Welch-fewer turnovers.

Mav-scares me.

Team: FEWER TURNOVERS.

Like most teams, guard play will determine how well this team does.

Don't tell the FIRE TUBBY crowd that after DeVoe smoked his way into a transfer and Al broke his foot, because Tubby still should have won with Blake at the point.

If Mo has health/conditioning issues, Ingram will have to fill his minutes.

My breakout player is Oto. Keep in mind I also picked Devron Bostick to lead the team in scoring his jr. year.:)

Starting 5

Coleman will start some and EE will start some. I see those two starting over big mo at this time.

Replace Welch with Coleman we all know has choked way too many times to be in at the end of games.

EE may not be that advanced offensively this coming year so your point is probably valid. That said he's already more than "just a banger". Even if he wasn't a finished product last year his passing skills were obvious, he's got natural touch that can't be coached, a decent little hook (work in progress) with either hand & Tubby ran plays for him in the post as a Freshman. When I think of guy's who're "just a banger" I think of Colt, a guy who's essentially a hockey goon. I predict EE will average double figures scoring his Jr/Sr years & not just off put backs & dunks.

Agreed, I think Oto's shot will come around & he'll find a way to contribute again this year. People who suggested he transfer will be surprised by how important his role is after Trevor/Rodney graduate.

I would like to see the small lineup, but I think Tubby goes big, partially because it will prepare Trevor and Rodney for the pros and partially because I think he likes going big.

PG: Andre Hollins
SG: Austin Hollins
SF: Rodney Williams
PF: Trevor Mbakwe
C: Eliot Eliason

6th Man: Julian Welch
7th Man: Joe Coleman

8th Man: Mo Walker
9th Man: Oto Osenieks

10th Man: Maverick Ahanmisi
11th Man: Andre Ingram

Redshirt/Walk on: Charles Buggs, Wally Ellenson, Chris Halvorsen, and Kendal Shell

Tubby will go as deep on the bench as he has to given fouls, injuries, and matchups. Welch and Joe will be used as spark plugs off the bench. Mav shouldn't have to play much with Dre and Welch eatting up most if not all of the PG minutes. If Mo is extremely rusty, out of shape, or injured, he could easily switch spots on the bench with Ingram.

Replace Welch with Coleman we all know has choked way too many times to be in at the end of games.

Obviously, you have chosen only to remember Welch's key missed free throws. I remember just as many (and probably more) clutch shots late in games, usually 3-pointers, when the Gophers really needed a big hoop. I'll take my chances with Welch on the floor late in a game.

PG- Andre Hollins
SG- Austin Hollins
SF- Rodney Willams
PF- Trevor Mbakwe
C- Elliot Elliason
1st off the bench- Julian Welch, Joe Coleman, Mo Walker, Oto Oseniks
Depth guys- Andre Ingram, Maverick Ahamnisi. If everything goes right hopefully Charles Buggs and Wally Ellenson can redshirt unless they show they are ready to play and can make a significant contribution you can't get from someone else.
Walk ons- Kendall Shell and Chris Halverson.
I think if Walker can get back to the level he was at he could slide into the starting lineup at the center spot. Depending on who we are playing we can maybe go small for a time at front and maybe go to a even more athleltic lineup, something like Hollins, Welch, Hollins, Willams, Mbakwe which could definitely give some teams problems.

Yea I think he'll be a decent player but in terms of how pieces fit, Mo (if healthy) fits much better next to Mbakwe than EE next year.

considering Walker's injuries and his conditioning, it would not suprise me if Ingram plays more than Moe. I am for the smaller line up all the way. But Tubby, likes to go big a lot especially early. The starters will be the two Hollins, EE, Rodney, and Trevor. Welch, coleman, Ingram, Oto, and Walker the second 5 in the hockey line change that Tubby will employ in the non-confernece like always. This is a solid 2nd 5, could they beat Penn State?

There are 200 minutes available on average (assuming no overtime). Less worried about who starts than who gets the minutes, especially down the stretch. Best guess on minutes/game:

Dre Hollins - 25
Rodney - 25
Mbakwe - 25
Austin Hollins - 25
Welsh - 20
Coleman - 20
EE - 18
Mo - 12
Ingram - 10
Oto - 10
Mav - 5
Wally - 3
Buggs - 2

Down the stretch of BT play, I suspect the rotation shortens to 8 or 9 players with the top 4 listed above getting the minutes that went to the bottom 4 during NC play.

I really don't think we've seen enough of Mo to say" if he gets back to the level he was playing before." He showed some promise. But I think fans are looking at him through rose colored glasses. The deepest spots on the team are the 4 and 5 with multiple players capable of good minutes. I really hope Tubby quits with these line changes but I'm sure in the nonconference that will continue.
