UNC was supposedly his dream school, wasn't it? If so, he's probably more likely to make exceptions for them. But are they for sure in the mix? Until he reschedules a visit with them I will be somewhat skeptical.

I don't think this eliminates Kansas at all, especially if Vaughn and Oubre compliment each other and enjoy playing together at Findlay.

Might not eliminate them, but I think it significantly reduces their chances. Selden will probably be returning to Kansas next year too. If Rashad wants a lot of shots (and I think he does), he'll go somewhere else.
 


I just tweeted this, and wanted to update the board - My sources tell me UNLV is making a major push & have positioned themselves as a legit option for Rashad Vaughn.

I don't want to use the word "leader" - but they have a got a very viable shot at him at this point in time.

That's why people who said it's fine if he goes out of state for college had it wrong. It's always bad when people leave your backyard. It gets other people in there ear.

On another note, is UNLV doing some shady business again? Is it possible for UNLV not to be shady?

To expand on my twitter thoughts, I'd be very disappointed if Rashad chose UNLV. With them getting Okobonoh at what seems like the last second, plus using a whole lot of somewhat shady coaching maneuvering with what appears to be the sole aim of getting Rashad, it'd be a sad reminder of the dirty reality of college basketball recruiting if Rashad went that route.
 

Well, with Okonoboh according to some national "inside" reporters he did commit to OSU on his visit there, then traveled to UNLV and set up an announcement date and picked UNLV. He said they had a better "blueprint" for him. I don't terribly mind him going there instead because he doesn't have Big Ten center size and that's the position he would've had to have played at OSU. At least in the Mountain West the bigs aren't as big so even if he's playing the 5 there it won't be against many players who are much bigger.

Hard to believe the "front-runners" for Vaughn are UNLV and ISU, but it seems like that may be the case.

You see, to younger people, Carrot Top and Wayne Newton aren't really why they go to Vegas. I get that you're playing dumb (at least I hope you are), but we shouldn't have to explain to anyone why Vegas is cool (to younger people), should we? I mean, we all get it, right?

There isn't a single person on the planet who has spent anytime at Tao, Hyde, XS or the Caesar's Pool that wouldn't laugh hysterically in your face with the comparison of Vegas to Hinckley. You think there might be a reason why the biggest party movie of this generation of kids was shot in Vegas. I get that nightclubs, partying, and that whole scene might not be yours. However, it's beyond stupid to not understand that it might appeal to a lot of younger people. It does.

Vegas is certainly cheesy, fake and all of that, but it has a cool factor (especially with younger people). Something tells me that you're one of those people who doesn't personally like it and therefore pretends to ignore that others do.

In other breaking news. . .
LA is hipper than Stillwater;
St. Tropez is cooler than White Bear Lake;
and, Rio is livelier than Duluth.

I don't really understand the 'coolest/most fun city in the country' point. I was under the assumption that mostly everything around there is 21+.

Yes and No. I had a lot of fun in Vegas when I was 18.. bottom line, he won't be carded as a casino..but thats not what he would be doing anyway. Lots of clubs and young hot spots.. I laughed when I saw a post about carrot top earlier, mocking Vegas. 18-22 year olds are having plenty of Non-carrot top fun in Vegas. Carrot Top comes into play when you are old and out of eligibility :)

Its tough to dispute Vegas being a fun town. It gets fricking hot in Summer, but he won't be there in summer.

I think UNLV will be a player if he ends up liking Vegas. It is a unique taste (Vegas), but if he likes it, UNLV will be tough to beat.

Vaughn has just always struck me as the type to lock himself in a gym and only cares about basketball. I think people are really hung up on the city and not the basketball program that DP pointed out.

I think UNLV is a major player, but it won't be because he gets to gamble and drink.

I think MN is also an awesome opportunity for him, but it isn't just the city drawing him anywhere IMO.

Having committed to Kansas on Tuesday, Kelly Oubre is now working on recruiting several other 2014 stars to join him.

“Tyus, Jahlil [and] Rashad,” Oubre told SNY.tv.

I'd personally be shocked to find out that Las Vegas was a popular destination for people under 40. However, despite all the people singing the praises of it as a tourist destination, I've yet to hear many people laud it as a place to live. Here's the thing. Every school is going to have good points and bad points. UNLV has the aging streetwalkers, the depressed and broken gamblers, and the mountains of under-the-table cash from boosters to offer. ISU offers the chance to look at cows and go to the odd bowling alley for some delicious onion rings and play on a team with some of the best pot dealers in the nation. The U offers the chance to play in front of the illustrious jmag21 on a raised floor. I guess it depends on what you're into.

These people want to visit Las Vegas, not live in it. Only the most hardcore party animals want to live there. I have plenty of friends who are or were party animals. Yet, when they went to Vegas they only went to the night clubs twice during a seven day stay. It gets old. You can only drink and dance and dress scantily (if you're a female) so much. You can also gamble, zip-line, see a show, etc. But you can only party so much. It's not exactly the kind of urban living that today's 20 somethings desire.

Ill add one more Vegas comment before steering back to the topic of the thread. I have two friends that love in Vegas (in their 30's). They both enjoy it and rarely go to the strip. Once in awhile for dinner (like going downtown here) but it's a nice town. Good weather. Nice suburbs. Outdoors, etc.

Who knows what Vaughn thinks. I'm guessing he is just going to better his hoops skills in Vegas. If he falls in love with town (for whatever reason), UNLV will be a player. Regardless. I think we have a shot. Even if small... Let's hope he gets homesick.

One of my classmates in grad school is from Las Vegas, and she says that the locals don't go anywhere near the strip.
 

Let us not forget the 20% unemployment, high crime rate, $350 AC & water bills, traffic that is just as bad as you have ever seen and, of course, the 120 degree summer days. But its a dry heat, so you got that going for you.

That said, I love Vegas, go once or twice a year and don't know if the sun is up until my phone alarm goes off telling me my flight leaves in 3 hours.
 

Vegas is a lot of fun - no dispute there. On the other hand, the UNLV campus sucks!

If Vaughn goes to UNLV he'll be on campus for 7 months tops since he'll declare for the draft immediately after his season so he probably doesn't much care what the campus is like, I'd guess. He will live in Vegas longer as a prep schooler than he would as a collegiate.

Anyone can have fun in Vegas, but no town gets older faster. Two days can be unbelievable, but four can feel like a year.

I might be the minority on this, But I think Vegas's best days are behind her. 10 years ago drinks were cheaper than Milwaukee, the women were still real, and every casino competed for your dollar. Now everything is overproduced, they're running low on the cheap gluttony, and the leviathan casinos are too over saturated to impress. Every detail is managed to a fault; there's no real adventure anymore outside downtown. That town need is in serious need of an enema.
