“UT needs rich donors”: Emails show wealthy alumni supporting “Eyes of Texas” threatened to pull donations

I don’t follow you. Did your last link say they supported replacing the song?

Yessir. From the Wiki link:

In June 2020, several players on the University of Texas at Austin football team requested that the university replace the song with one "without racist undertones."[8][9] In response to the players request, African-American former University of Texas football players Earl Campbell and Ricky Williamsspoke out to keep the song in place as UT's alma mater.[10]

Campbell's comments on "The Eyes of Texas" are as follows:

"I'm proud of that song,” ~ “I think there's a lot of things that can be done other than that song in my opinion. I just believe 'The Eyes of Texas' stands for something."[10]
Williams was also quoted as saying:

"I think it's important to understand our history and to understand where the song came from, but I think it's more powerful to transform the meaning of the song and the definition of the song rather than trying to erase our history like it never existed,”[10]

Well, I didn’t say that all people support it are ____.

I just said that you could see that. Because it’s true.

No doubt, the Sooners had some part in planting these seeds of discord 😜

After some guys transferred our when Tom Herman showed up similar theories abounded.

Now it's because Steve showed up that Texas fans attribute bad news to Oklahoma ;)

Humans are tribal and sinful at heart, the anti-racist meme attempts to create new tribal boundaries, but it is inherently unstable because it stokes self-righteousness and hatred. It does not transform individuals through love because it vindictively targets groups with rough justice.

Go Gophers.

If only a compromise could be worked out. Or has this country forgotten what that is?

How do you compromise between the sides of "keep the song" and "replace the song"?

Replace half the chorus?

If your donors are telling kids they won't be able to get a job in the state and that black people should move out of state ... I think they're not interested in much of that.

Mpls, I'm not trying to sell you, but I think you might really enjoy this article. It's well-written and unbiased:

Why would anyone choose to read something that isn't slanted? The smart person limits themselves to watching, listening to or reading things that support their established opinion. Strictly following that one rule means you'll never be tempted to modify your thinking.

Seriously, I thought the article you posted was good. Thanks.

Not echoing in my head already ? = BIASED!

I would have to see some direct articles or emails with direct quotes for me to believe that donors are telling black people to move out of state. Honestly, where do people come up with this stuff? Are we that desperate to paint the picture we want that this kind of embellishment is necessary?

I recall Univ of North Dakota had serious concerns from their donors about changing the Fighting Sioux nickname. What is it that makes their concerns or opinions any more or less valid than those that think the name should change? Why is a UT donors concerns over changing the school song any less valid than an 18-yr old recruit from south Florida or western Pennsylvania?

This first world problem is classic Texas.
Somehow a lot of people there have never got over joining the USA.
Their descent into stone age living when because of lack of regulation and refusal to join a wide electric power grid the power failed across most of the state when the temperature dropped below freezing.
Of course they came running with their hands out to the hated Federal Government asking for help.
Now their bitter at life governor and the wackadoodle lt. governor are "opening the state up and don't wear masks" while the pandemic has not been diminished to a safe level and the vaccination rate is at the bottom of all the states.
Now the the former guy is muted and I can see the news and read the papers without agitation I simply do not want to think about or care what happens to a self destructive state.

An example of a compromise could be something like: 1. Keep the song, but 2. UT commits to bringing the African American % of students equal or greater to that of the state by 2025 and also creating new scholarships and grants for African American students.

That's just off the top of my head. No idea if either side would agree to it.

Can you tell I'm a middle child?

It seems as if there should be room for compromise here, but of course I'm speaking from a removed perspective and as we know, it will depend upon how strident the voices are that drive the conversation.

In regards to the song, I think most can see the actual lyrics are pretty innocuous; it's the context of the song's creation and the ongoing racial disparity (in relation to the other issues brought up by the student athletes over the summer) that is the fuel to this fire. It seems pretty reasonable to ask for renaming of campus buildings that were named after blatant segregationists, doesn't it? Perhaps a commitment to increasing the African-American student population to be more representative of the overall population?

One thing, they better hope they can come to some type of compromise sooner rather than later. The football program is in a precarious position and Steve Sarkisian's previous tenure as U. of Washington's head coach doesn't illicit great confidence. The likes of Oklahoma, Texas A&M, LSU and many many others are surely hoping this controversy draws out as long as possible. (although A&M's African-American student population at College Station is a smaller percentage than UT-Austin's).

Haha, Loony Lefty garbage from a clown who believes in the nanny state. Liberalism truly is a mental disorder.

I like my compromise because it acknowledges that the song may have had a bad past (but currently is not used that way) but moves the situation forward by righting past wrongs by offering more opportunities for African Americans.

That's obviously not a compromise on the song, by definition. But I absolutely applaud you for trying to get something to both sides. That's how you would try to do it, no doubt.

Maybe change a word or a line or a phrase or add another ... something. Might help some folks figure that now it isn't the same song.

Nanny state is a good description for Texas which required federal disaster aid (your and my tax dollars in action) because it couldn't keep the lights and heat on and the water running. And the recent surge in gas prices? You can thank Texas for that also because of the disruption of energy supplies. So while I could care less about Texas we find out we're in this together because moral - social - economic ties. if the concerns of athletes are ignored by Texas, they can find plenty of other programs to meet their needs.

If your comment was meant to be a convincing argument it failed.
However,I am sure it would be successful in middle school.

Les got laughed out of middle school.

In other news....the Texas Varsity Minstrel Show will resume performing the song in black face....citing that there is no racist intent behind it.

Did you even read the link I provided? The University of Texas created a large committee to do their own independent research to determine if the song had racist intent.

"This committee was composed of former students, current students, administrators, faculty members, student athletes, retiredadministrators, spirit squad members, and communication specialists. Individuals on the committee sacrificed for the good ofour university – with members spread across the world, some caring for elderly parents and newborns, and many with full-timecareers and family responsibilities. On a weekly, and for many daily basis, this team voluntarily made the time to listen, work, discuss, and conduct research. As a collective, we were supported by the excellent research and investment of time each memberbrought to our work. The university is fortunate to have these dedicated individuals serving on the committee. I am indebted tothem for their grace and hard work."

This is how these types of issues should be handled. Not with emotional temper tantrums but by making a committee and compiling a report.

I think you're missing the point.

I suspect the issues aren't "the person who wrote it or folks who sing the song intend to be racist", the issue for some is that the origins of the song are.

Not exactly the same thing.

Also if you're going to go with the 'committee run by folks determined to do a thing' ... I got NFL football some stadiums I'd like you to pay for because the return on them is AMAZING! Check out these studies that the owners paid for!

You might also be interested in what Les's lawyer has to say about how horrible he's being treated .... and so on ...

Fair enough. In my opinion, if you have to look so hard for the racism in something that it requires an independent investigation, it probably isn't an issue. The booster response has definitely forced it keeping it to seem racist.

On a side note, the president of UT already said no one will be forced to sing the song or even stay on the field for the song.

"That “The Eyes of Texas” was most probably debuted in blackface is a painful reality of the song's The Eyes of Texas History Committee Report. The University of Texas at Austin origin. Although it was not written in dialect and was not composed as a minstrel song, we are uncomfortable with this aspect of its history. We believe it is important to fully acknowledge and learn from the university's past."

I suspect most folks who are worried about 'look so hard' are the folks not experiencing racism... and that just ads up to 'doesn't bother me, so it shouldn't bother you'.
