Gophers currently have the #1 pass defense in the nation

Of our upcoming opponents, all but one extreme outlier (Maryland) are materially worse in the pass game than USC, which we just held to 17 points. If we tighten up our run defense some (LB play), and stay healthy, I like our chances in the 2nd half of the schedule … especially if PJ lets Brosmer...

    How's Koi doing?

Gousby and Bryson both have strengths. Bryson has size. I could see him as a nickel back next year, once Henderson moves on …

I'm worried PJ will become a thrill seeking degenerate play calling gambler now

We got a couple more (meaningful) offensive drive opportunities simply because no “arm twitch” false starts by Johnson. Little things like that make a big difference in OL play in a close game against a very talented team.

I'm worried PJ will become a thrill seeking degenerate play calling gambler now

I won't necessarily call it the "right" call," but PJ clearly made the "play to win" call. Kicking a FG from the one-half yard line in a game with under 2 minutes left against the #11 team in the nation that had been gashing our run defense all night would have been the "play not to lose" call...

    Drew Allar vs UCLA

Max was 15 of 19 yesterday, but with few downfield throws. If our OL continues to gel as a pass blocking unit, I think we'll see more of what Max can do on slower-developing downfield throws. Go Gophers.

Play of the game from my seat. ;-)

Agree with your assessment--certainly the make or break play. But I call it a tie with Koi's interception, because 6'1" Koi went up the ladder and topped out well above the arms of an enormous 6'6" WR (#2). Koi's elevation on that interception was phenomenal ... probably the only guy among our...

    How's Koi doing?

We need to find a way to get Kerry Brown and Koi both lots of playing time. Brown is a playmaker, too, and a very aggressive tackler. He's no Annexstad.

I'm worried PJ will become a thrill seeking degenerate play calling gambler now

    1. The 4th down call was not inexplicable. If we score a TD, USC, which has burned all its timeouts, has a very tough time marching downfield for a TD against our very stout pass defense. 2. If Gophs kick a field goal, USC has a much shorter march to tie with a FG, perhaps exploiting our not so...

    Curt Cignetti’s Contract

Agree. He might be at IU for 5-7 years, or he might in effect be auditioning for a much higher paid job elsewhere ... a place with huge NIL money for player recruiting, etc. $6M is peanuts if a helmet school wants him.

    How many wins are left????

IF the Gophers play as they did in the 2nd half of the Michigan game, and the entire USC game, I think we have 5 toss-up games out if the final 6. I think we can take 4. Record ends up 7-5. Might make it to 8-4. If we don’t stay at the Mich/USC level of play we might not make a bowl. Injuries...

    Pick'ems Week 7, October 12

Some pretty tough calls this week! Gotta chew on it for a while.

    Was Henderson Injured?

USC threw a lot of quick passes to the side line in bubble screen type plays. Having a true, very quick CB in the nickel position was probably a good thing for this game—as USC passed much more than it ran. USC did, however, really gashed us with its running game—which might be related to the...

    Was Henderson Injured?

He was woozy on the field and went into the tent. He made a brilliant diving tackle, but might have gotten kneed in the helmet. Hope he is available again soon.

PFF player grades: Several Gophers shine in upset of USC

I thought I saw Finnessy line up sometimes at LB, too, though his current spot is DE. We had all kinds of new faces in at LB in the game. They acquired themselves pretty well, given the level of competition.

UCLA has played a really tough schedule

UCLA has had trouble scoring—but understandable against 4 ranked teams. Gopher D needs to play another strong, complete game. UCLA defense is middle of the pack in the B1G against the rush, despite its tough schedule. But against the pass, UCLA is worst in the B1G. Might be a pass to set up the...

    Transfer QB for 2025

If 2024 is any indication, there will be a lot of QB talent in the portal for the 2025 season. We’ve actually got a moderately experienced back-up QB, a transfer, on the roster right now, I believe. I’d like to see Lindsay get a fair shot: big arm. Time will tell.

Big Ten teams in conference play traveling 2+ time zones: 1-8

We travel 2 time zones to play UCLA this coming weekend. Hope we buck the trans. Go Gophers!

    Was Henderson Injured?

Baranowski was out at LB, injured. I don’t recall seeing Henderson play (wasn’t specifically watching for him). Eli Mau and Joey Gerlach got play at LB; Lucas Finnessy also played a lot at edge. Gophers might have come out of this big win with some new injuries. PJ subtly referenced this...

Good Vibes Thread: List your positives from the win and your thoughts about the team moving forward into UCLA + the bye week.

Brosmer’s 79% completion rate. He is dependable and steady, and getting used to B1G pace, etc. Much better OC play calling; making our opponents defend the whole field. Taylor + Major are a good pair. Gophers now have top ranked passing defense in the B1G (based on yards surrendered per game...
