B1G Game 6: Gophers host UCLA 1-14-26

Be interesting to see how coach P matches up players vs UCLA. Believe one of her strengths is figure out unique possible ways to defend certain teams. After watching highlights vs Nebraska, I would not have bad collapses on Betts to give UCLA the 3 ball as they have 5 G/F that are 33% or higher and they feed off attention for Betts. Betts is only 68% at the FT line and so what if she scores 30 points. Can't allow the 3 balls. I know last year we also got beat by the longer shots from collapsing on Betts too many times.

Would like to see Coach P play Betts 1 on 1 with Battle and Holloway. Yes, don't believe can prevent from scoring, but believe they could hold tough getting some balls in at more difficult locations and frustrate Betts while she is trying to score. Yes, give up a few fouls sure too, but Betts might also get frustrated and get some offensive calls(not likely to get them). Think both Battle and Holloway have shown ability to guard the 5 spot (Battle did with Maryland). Tonga and Christian could also be used to give fouls and see on the 5. It is a unique aspect to have a player like Battle who has been willing to accept those challenges.

Then maybe get Hart in while Betts is sitting? Would keep Braun, Glenn, McKinney, GG guarding the 3 pt shot and still make it tough for Betts to get some balls and convert the 2.

I would let Betts score 30 before giving up 10-15 each of the outside guards in the shooting. 3's hurt ya more then 2's with UCLA. 1 UCLA loss is when Texas held UCLA to 13 3PT shot attempts and they only made 4.

My lineup chart would be

C-Battle/Hart/Holloway/Tonga
G/F-McKinney
G/F-GG
G/F-Braun
G/F- Glenn

Let Christian give the 4 G/F rest.

If Battle and Holloway can force Betts to catch the ball few feet farther from the basket than normal, would be ideal. 4 g/F cant get caught watching or collapsing and leaving their perimeter players. With correct spacing could get some tipped passes and need to get the loose balls!

No McKinney

Ugh. You don’t get many opportunities to score against UCLA, you need to score at the rim. I know the Bruins defense is tough but has been an issue the last few seasons. Too many shots around the rim that are short. Gophers defense is tough tho that’s encouraging

Gophers would be tied at half if they didn't have that run(s) of missing so many shots. They worked hard to evade the defense stops and get shots. Gophers defense is strong. Kept UCLA's high powered offense to 34 points at half. Gophers down 10. Would be, could be even.

Can't keep giving up the 3's though. UCLA makes more teams pay with the 3's then going low to Betts.

We're doing a great job of preventing UCLA shots, but they're making the ones we give them. UCLA on the other hand is gumming up our offensive sets pretty badly. We can't seem to get a decent screen set. They're either effectively switching and hedging, or simply fighting over our screens. I'm a little shocked, but getting the ball into our posts, or GG in the lane, seems to be our best bet so far.

Playing the #3 team in the country and all you see on TV are open seats. Now I get why recruits want to go to Iowa :) lol

I see Gophers on offense repeatedly stopped and gummed up but they creatively work, work, work and get the shots. GG smoked Rice on one play working it. It then is a bummer to miss so many shots they worked hard. Overall I am impressed with staying even with UCLA.

Or maybe they want the freedom to be able to play some OFFENSE and not just worry about the D. Now down 14 with many cold shooters yet have not looked for one off the bench to see if they might get hot shooting. Have no set plays to get any open 3's or any shots period. We get the ball and drive to the middle to get trapped almost every single possession. Try playing Christian at the 5 and see if Betts allows her to have the 3 pt shot. Cmon Coach, try making an adjustment for some offense.

I know it is the #3 team, I know McKinney is out, but if all we also have a veteran team with a lot more skill then most think, but coach just doesn't have any offense.

Hope McKinney is alright(lot of out with concussions already in two years) . Tough situation

Ugh.

Almost all of GG's success tonight has been when she gets the ball in the paint and uses her old post moves. UCLA is doing a great job on her and the rest of the Gophers out on the perimeter. Even when we do get a rare open look from outside, UCLA closes very quickly with size in our face.

Down 17 with 5 left. Nothing to lose to put Christian at the 5 and even has to foul Betts but start shooting the 3's

Braun 3 gets back to 11 or 12 with little over two minutes. Foul Betts instantly and stretch out the game...Instead we allow wide open hot Kiki for another 3 after 15 seconds for game over. No time management just liked missed TIMEOUT vs Maryland. Like we are settling for the moral victory again.
