Here is TxTech billionaire walking through blueprint for how they bought their way into the national spotlight. This is the new college football.

The NFL is a business.

And the NFL, correctly, forces strict pairity.

Makes it a vastly superior product.

I'll continue watching the Gophers, for the foreseeable future. I won't bother wasting my time on any other team in college football.
The NFL does so via collective bargaining with the NFLPA. If college football wants to go that route, I'd support it. But without that type of agreement, the courts have decided that the previous NCAA rules are illegal restraint of trade. Sorry that upsets you.

Some people are successful and boast about it. Most successful people are modest about it, and I prefer them over the loudmouths.
I would tend to agree, but does it upset you more WHAT he did, or that he's talking about it? Because for a lot of people, it appears to be the former.

No it wasn’t. They said there is a window of no rules and we want to blow a bunch of money. MN said we will play within the rules.

The problem was there is no enforcement of rules. I don’t fault donors or the U for not blowing money.
Would we, or the donors, feel like a bunch of money was blown if the Gophers were the #4 team in the country with a bye in the CFP?

Oh, I'm sure a bunch of Karens would complain about said billionaire donor not spending it on the medical school or something, as if it's anyone's business how others spend their money.

People would love it if we had those donors. People would love it more if NIL actually meant NIL and not pay for play. There is a reason TT doesn’t want to sign the CSC for NIL clearinghouse.

For sure he is. Should be, he brought in a ton of talent. While a portion of the country debates what’s right or wrong or amateur or professional - this dude saw an opportunity to bring folks together and made it happen. Spend your money how you want. Not surprised he is a successful business person.
He was not officially part of the Texas Tech program. He gets no official credit. The record for this season will not contain his name.

He can tell himself that he "made this happen" all he wants. There's nothing standing the test of time that will prove that. He will be forgotten.

How long will rich people be willing to spend big, and get no glory themselves out of it? That's not how these people operate.

Agree that new federal law is needed.

I assume the video provides some glory from his vantage point

i don't think you understand how these handshakes, suites, access, etc. all work with all of this. there was a really good espn article on the bagmen down in the SEC a couple years back (ruiz at Miami has also talked about it). these guys absolutely get a ton of credit amongst their peers. it doesn't take it being written down somewhere to matter to him while he's alive

The level of naivety among some Gopher fans never ceases to amaze me.

I disagree.

I've read that article and it says exactly what I'm getting at here. To be an SEC bagman was to be like a spy. You were owed a huge debt of gratitude, but you could never be publicly known/acknowledged. It was always a gladhand and wink from a coach. Nothing formal and public.

These fat cats want the glory. They want to be honored in public. Which is why I bet this guy wanted to make this video in the first place.

What he did doesn’t bother me because it’s now ‘in bounds’ to bankroll a team. And his boasting about it doesn’t bother me either. I just sensed he was overly pleased with himself and said so.

It’s interesting to know that he did it and what he thinks about it. I’ve posted a couple times prior to this that it will probably take a wealthy person with a big ego before we get serious NIL money.

Oh, I'm sure a bunch of Karens would complain about said billionaire donor not spending it on the medical school or something, as if it's anyone's business how others spend their money.
I agree. It’s interesting that we often get posts mistakenly thinking the state funds Gopher athletics. Many years ago, they did, but no longer except, for maybe infrastructure loans. The stadium used a loan or guarantee from the state, but I think the Athletes Village was a loan from the University.

I disagree.

yes its true. if they win the title he will be sad and dejected they don't thank him first winning the title. is that what you seriously think? that unless his name is up on some banner it's going to mean nothing to him? Then he wouldn't have bank rolled shit to start with.

these guys love the notoriety. the same as the bagmen did. same reason why ruiz goes around and talks about himself to everyone who'll listen. it doesn't need to be in a book, just that they are known as that guy and within the circles they walk. you know these guys (not just this dude specifically) are talking about the players they "bought".

They don't get any notoriety. Unless they take it upon themselves to make some video to let anyone who is listening know that they were the reason. Kinda selfish, but that's how these people are.

The boosters at TTU didn’t waste money. They have significantly improved their athletic department.

There aren’t going to be any repercussions either.

Tech, and other Texas schools, hasn’t signed up with the CSC NIL clearinghouse as ordered by the Texas AG due to conflict with Texas law.

This HAS been going on for a long time. When the great Hugh McElhenny left Washington after being drafted by the 49ers in 1952, he claimed that he took of a massive pay cut.

What will happen to the schools that don’t sign the CSC demand letter….

Nothing?

they ran an espn article on this guy well before his video released. and again yesterday. and he's been featured earlier this year. he's all over the news pitching reform in college football (the saving college sports thing that he's the one featured in the commercials). so yes, he's gotten a ton of notoriety. Further articles about him in the NYT, USAToday, Pro Football Network. He's become TTUs chair of their board of regents. The field is named after him. he's on trumps commission to look into college sports.

If they have any balls in Lubbock they will erect a statue of this guy.

I hope this post doesn't upset anyone, but being from Texas, I know that if it weren't for
Cody Campbell throwing MIllions of dollars into the texas tech football program tech would
be a middle of the pack team like they have been for years. Coach joey's record for the last
three years is average at best. And I know, all colleges have NIL money to pay players. It seems
texas tech found their Golden Goose in Campbell. I hope Minnesota can get the NIL money other school's have. Good Luck to the Gophers in their bowl game.

Not only what you mentioned, but I'm sure he'll get to be on the sidelines for playoff games, maybe even get to party in the locker room etc. Plenty of things like that that most never get access too.

Plus who says they don't paint a picture of his portrait alongside the banner they'll hang in the stadium if they win it all?

I think the other poster you are discussing with is just upset and being disagreeable.

Why would people love it more if NIL actually meant NIL? Many of us have accepted for years that big time programs pay big time money for players. The difference is it's just out in the open now. I'd prefer it all just be out on the table than in the shadows. I'd prefer even more if we had a whale to buy players like Tech.

They get notoriety among their peers.

One of the background stories behind the SMU Pony Express scandal, was that you had all these big time boosters in Texas business circles bragging about UT, A&M, Arkansas etc. The wealthy SMU alums decided they were going to do the same, and build a program they could brag about to their fellow fat cats.

but also brings into question why the TT boosters didn’t conform to the bags of cash legend earlier and only got into the game after NIL.
Not everyone wants to break the rules and break the law too. Now they don’t need to worry about that.

personally, don’t care what nil means. I just want to win.

TT’s institutional manifest destiny moment is cool and aspirational. Most complaints about current nil seem to be misdirected hall-monitor coded scorn, we should redirect that righteous rage to our own admin for not fund raising better so that we too can win more.

How good is Texas Tech actually? We’ll find out soon. But I suspect easily winning the Big 12 roughly translates to finishing about 4th-7th in the B1G, or 6th-9th in the SEC.

In other words, he probably isn’t throwing a whole lot more money at the problem than some boosters do elsewhere - but it has an outsized impact in the Big 12 because they have a lot of programs with very limited resources.

Teaching a generation that rules don't matter and we will find a way around the rules seems like a poor take.
