The NFL does so via collective bargaining with the NFLPA. If college football wants to go that route, I'd support it. But without that type of agreement, the courts have decided that the previous NCAA rules are illegal restraint of trade. Sorry that upsets you.

I would tend to agree, but does it upset you more WHAT he did, or that he's talking about it? Because for a lot of people, it appears to be the former.

Oh, I'm sure a bunch of Karens would complain about said billionaire donor not spending it on the medical school or something, as if it's anyone's business how others spend their money.

People would love it if we had those donors. People would love it more if NIL actually meant NIL and not pay for play. There is a reason TT doesn’t want to sign the CSC for NIL clearinghouse.

He was not officially part of the Texas Tech program. He gets no official credit. The record for this season will not contain his name.

He can tell himself that he "made this happen" all he wants. There's nothing standing the test of time that will prove that. He will be forgotten.


How long will rich people be willing to spend big, and get no glory themselves out of it? That's not how these people operate.

i don't think you understand how these handshakes, suites, access, etc. all work with all of this. there was a really good espn article on the bagmen down in the SEC a couple years back (ruiz at Miami has also talked about it). these guys absolutely get a ton of credit amongst their peers. it doesn't take it being written down somewhere to matter to him while he's alive

I disagree.

I've read that article and it says exactly what I'm getting at here. To be an SEC bagman was to be like a spy. You were owed a huge debt of gratitude, but you could never be publicly known/acknowledged. It was always a gladhand and wink from a coach. Nothing formal and public.

These fat cats want the glory. They want to be honored in public. Which is why I bet this guy wanted to make this video in the first place.

What he did doesn’t bother me because it’s now ‘in bounds’ to bankroll a team. And his boasting about it doesn’t bother me either. I just sensed he was overly pleased with himself and said so.

It’s interesting to know that he did it and what he thinks about it. I’ve posted a couple times prior to this that it will probably take a wealthy person with a big ego before we get serious NIL money.

I agree. It’s interesting that we often get posts mistakenly thinking the state funds Gopher athletics. Many years ago, they did, but no longer except, for maybe infrastructure loans. The stadium used a loan or guarantee from the state, but I think the Athletes Village was a loan from the University.

yes its true. if they win the title he will be sad and dejected they don't thank him first winning the title. is that what you seriously think? that unless his name is up on some banner it's going to mean nothing to him? Then he wouldn't have bank rolled shit to start with.

these guys love the notoriety. the same as the bagmen did. same reason why ruiz goes around and talks about himself to everyone who'll listen. it doesn't need to be in a book, just that they are known as that guy and within the circles they walk. you know these guys (not just this dude specifically) are talking about the players they "bought".

They don't get any notoriety. Unless they take it upon themselves to make some video to let anyone who is listening know that they were the reason. Kinda selfish, but that's how these people are.

The boosters at TTU didn’t waste money. They have significantly improved their athletic department.

There aren’t going to be any repercussions either.

Tech, and other Texas schools, hasn’t signed up with the CSC NIL clearinghouse as ordered by the Texas AG due to conflict with Texas law.
 

This HAS been going on for a long time. When the great Hugh McElhenny left Washington after being drafted by the 49ers in 1952, he claimed that he took of a massive pay cut.

they ran an espn article on this guy well before his video released. and again yesterday. and he's been featured earlier this year. he's all over the news pitching reform in college football (the saving college sports thing that he's the one featured in the commercials). so yes, he's gotten a ton of notoriety. Further articles about him in the NYT, USAToday, Pro Football Network. He's become TTUs chair of their board of regents. The field is named after him. he's on trumps commission to look into college sports.
