Michigan State in the $$$$

I've seen a few of these massive number announcements and while I'm sure there's an impact ... the whole massive sudden success rarely seems to come like you imagine it might.

I suspect these donations are a lot more nuanced, maybe not even guaranteed and so on.

As we've seen first-hand, facilities investments take time to be realized (additional fundraising and construction time) and only get you closer to the current standard which has typically moved by the time you complete your own project.

It is amazing how much influence one rich person can have on all of college football now. What's stopping someone from giving a massive amount of money to be used for NIL in a year or a short period so the program can just buy the best of the best?

Nothing, but it would be much harder in football due to the number of players and the nature of hte game. I fully expect this to happen in basketball very soon.

Soon? The LifeWallet guy already did it with Miami a couple years ago.

I think someone joked about this before but you almost have to wonder how long until a college team is bought/funded by the Saudis. It's happening in pro soccer already.

100%.....way harder to buy your way to a title in football, not impossible, but harder. The number of players plus injuries makes it really difficult.

Different story in basketball. Some rich dude could definitely come in and try to buy a dream team. Still have to get the right players though. Rutgers had the #2 and #5 picks in the most recent NBA draft but didn't get the results to show for having that kind of talent due to their age and injuries.

Coyle not much of a fundraiser. It’s like having one hand tied behind our back. Me thinks MSU will screw this up somehow, too.

That makes the donation amount make more sense.
Like the Ryans with Northwestern, and the Andersons with St. Thomas, if you donate a building to a college, it's good for tax purposes. If you just give a bunch of money to pay players, it's less so I think.

It’s only a matter of time. They’ve got F1, big time soccer, and a golf league, so it’s VERY likely they’ve already approached NCAA conferences. If that doesn’t get a foot in the door, they’ll go for an individual football or basketball program and throw a few hundred mill at it for naming rights, court/field branding, etc.

Would Gopher fans be cool if we renamed the stadium "Saudi Oil Stadium" if it got us a championship?

Paging Mr Coyle. Mark Coyle. Opportunity on line 1.

Sparty has some serious deep-pocketed alums (Matt and Justin Ishbia and Dan Gilbert are billionaires) who all give generously to MSU athletics. Count me envious as hell.

We do too; Sanford, Carlsons, Cargills, Gore (Gore-Tex inventor), etc. have made major gift. We just need them to care about NIL a little more.

They're giving to support athletics or the university at large? I'm thinking the majority--if not all--of their contributions are going toward the academic side (which I'm also appreciative of).

I hope it is in the sec. Would be so funny for bama to play in the Prince Mohammed Bin Salman stadium.

I assume the collective helped facilitate for a number of players that maybe underperformed expectations a bit (apologies to my guy Nestor and Tracy, Coleman, Biber) in terms of quality depth or starters or future starters to the program. Either the evaluation process or the coaches were faulty this round after hitting some home runs last several years. Can’t win em all. Hopefully a blip. Maybe a money issue.

It would be extremely fascinating to see Chernoff’s NIL spreadsheet and allocation.
