Max

Yikes, felt a little bad for Max, it was brutal. Our Kevinly Father said he was processing too fast, whatever that means
It sounds counter-intuitive but I was seeing someting similar to what O'Connell was saying. Brosmer was getting a little jumpy and not letting plays develop. Of course, the Seahawks were all over him so he had good reason to rush things or get sacked twice as many times as he did.

I thought his bigger problem is that his footwork was off and he was sailing the ball something terrible. It's obvious he spent a lot of time developing arm strength but it looks like he has sacrificed accuracy in the process.

It was awful but I think if Addison had caught that first ball he dropped, it might have settled Max down and he would have gotten into a rhythm. Someone might miss 5 three-pointers in a row, but one goes through and suddenly the player can't miss. We probably wouldn't have won, but Max wouldn't be in the Viking Hall of Disasters.

Same goes for the disaster pick 6 fourth down. If a field goal is kicked, or literally any other play run that doesn’t leave the play-side defensive end completely unblocked in the QBs face, the game and Max’s status is different. Oh well. The play is now immortalized.

Ever since Dan Campbell started going for it on 4th-and-whatever, every coach in the league seems to think he has to do the same thing regardless of game situation. Take the points there and hope your defense can keep you in the game. Can't assume the field goal would have been good (although it would have been a rare miss from that range), but that was likely a 10-point swing.

That said, no excuse of Max's continuing the play.

When more and more teams follow the analytics it’ll be interesting to see the numbers change

All the data saying go for it is based on teams usually not going for it.

Perhaps in 6 years it’ll confirm 2025 analytics
Perhaps new data will say whoops

That's all true, but it seems the decisions often don't fall in line within the context of the game. The counterargument to my point is O'Connell probably thought he had to think outside the box and somehow get a lead when in a situation to do so with Max under center and hope the defense could hold it. He's the coach and I'm not.

It’ll be interesting to see how he counters.
He takes more 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 shots than any coach I’ve seen

The more you do that the less it’s there.
I have no problem with him going for it. But if you’re trying to play gotcha instead of physical on 4th and 2….you better not get out smarted by the defense.

He was 0/1 on that play.

Thinking outside the box would have been to run the ball in that situation as he is known to want to always throw it. The way the D was aligned, they were playing pass all the way.

Max will process all this and be fine. Whether that means he ever sees a field again is another issue.

Anyone watching the game saw that he was in a very low probability success situation. Seattle's defense is the real deal, his receivers were not helping, and thank god for the TE that gave some positive yards.

I'm not a pro ball guy nor do I watch the Vikings, but Jefferson was in major pout mode to these eyes. Limited dataset but it didn't look like he was trying very hard to get open. Go ahead any significant other of Mr. Jefferson and let me have it if you are reading this...

I couldn’t help but see the same thing you did about the Viking’s “…star baby… “for much of this season. It’s a tough season all the way around for that team, Good luck to JJ and Max. Tony Dungy switched his dream to coaching. Who knows…they say he really inderstands offenses.

Yeah, brutal spot for first start and unfortunately he wasn't able to overcome it.

Can't speak specifically to Jefferson's effort but sure the WR are very frustrated with the QB situation this year. There have been a lot of dropped balls as well which doesn't help.

Will be interesting to see if Max gets another shot at all this year. Odds of JJ staying healthy behind this messed up O-Line isn't very high....especially with the way he holds onto the ball.

Interesting why they didn’t replicate it in 25-26 or 23-24 then

If they have a roster to win 13 games consistently and 2/3 years they’re sub.500 the coach needs to go
In 2023 Cousins got hurt while in the middle of a winning streak, sure they pulled a couple out of their ass after that, longer Dobbs played the more he got exposed and all the other options that year were bad as well, but to answer your question the difference is QB play, this is clearly a good team with competent QB play. This team will finish 4-13 maybe 5-12

I do not think this is a good team with competent QB play. They’re an average team with competent QB play

They’re too old and slow on D
Too little depth

When I said they pulled 13 wins out their butt I meant they’re a 9-8 team who got to 13

With competent QB play they’re probably an 8-10 win team.

John Wolford
MIN Quarterback #5

Vikings signed QB John Wolford off their practice squad.

Wolford’s signing likely means that he’ll be the backup quarterback for JJ McCarthy for Week 14 against the Commanders, with Max Brosmer the emergency third quarterback.

Max was the sacrificial lamb last Sunday.

Certainly yesterday against the Commanders would likely have been a better debut for Max. Understand the starting O-Line was back so that certainly helped too. Hopefully he'll get some mop-up before the season ends. Also, must be said it's good to see JJ have a good game too. He's way too expensive to not succeed.

JJ McCarthy is too expensive?

So many sources trying to identify the worst stat line or worst QB performance ever. I seem to remember Vikings backup Steve Bono once going 1/10 for 5 yards.

And then Bono stayed in the league for about fifteen years and was even KC's starter for a stretch.

Max was put in a brutal situation, on the road against a contender with a really strong defense and with a patchwork O-Line in front of him that was missing multiple starters. He didn't play well and the pick 6 was a horrible decision but he was also put into a spot where it would have been highly unlikely for him to succeed in his first NFL start.

JJ had a really good game against a bad Commanders team while playing at home with his full O-Line protecting him. Next weekend against Dallas will be a much better indication as to whether or not JJ has started to turn a corner into being a respectable NFL QB.

For the Vikings sake I hope JJ works out to be the long term solution but he still has a ways to go. As for Max, hopefully he can put the rough start behind him, keep learning and developing and if he gets another shot at some point, make the most of it.

Was nice to see him have a good game, but rookie contracts are not expensive, in NFL terms.

I believe for his slot it is just under $22MM for 4 years, which includes a signing bonus.

His total value for 4 years is less than the 2025 salary of 19 other QBs this season. Led by Dak Prescott, of the 6-6-1 Cowboys [smack my face emoji] at $60MM for this season alone.
