All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

Virginia Tech isn't a better job. While the ACC is easier to contend in, it's also little brother to the Big Two. And VT isn't one of the top 5 jobs in the ACC anymore. Peak Frank Beamer was a unicorn. They haven't been really good for a long time. They are way behind not just Miami and FSU, but also Clemson, GT and even UVa, SMU etc.

In a total non-sequitur to the post, I keep looking for SMU in the Big 12 standings and never equate them with the ACC.

The original post I quoted said "Jerry Jones a notoriously cheap person".

I don't think that holds water when giving away $10M to you alma mater.

By percentage of net worth I give more to the university of Minnesota annually (who didn’t let attend their esteemed university) than he did to his Alma mater. But sure 👍

To put it in perspective, and if you can believe reported net worth via the internet, Jerry Jones is worth $19.9BB and if he donated $10MM, that is .0005% of his net worth.

So, if you were worth $1,000,000, it would be equivalent to donating $502.

Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin is a Millionaire, a U of MN graduate and he has never given two pennies to the University of MN. That putz even wears Badger gear all the time. He is no Gopher

No but it is bad enough they might want him and good enough he might consider

I disagree that viewpoint holds water. $10M is still $10M.

We can agree to disagree

They might want him. I doubt he will consider it.
The reason would consider that job that is lateral and not a significant upgrade is if he thinks he’s peaked here and that’s a good exit ramp to an above average job.

If he leaves we should be happy for him and also happy for us.

The only thing I would say about fleck is there is an odd circumstance in the Venn diagram

All the teams in one circle are significant enough upgrades where they wouldn’t want fleck

The other teams are significant enough downgrades fleck wouldn’t want them.

Not sure who is in the middle.
If Arkansas really has the money some claim, they don’t want Fleck. If they don’t he doesn’t want them.

I think Virginia tech is the most likely job I’ve seen so far this cycle
First thing that popped into my head...

One of the more astute things I've ever read on GH. One component I would add: From the school's perspective, RTB doesn't really fly if they have their own established brand. PJ isn't getting the Penn State job, but can you imagine "We Are. Row the Boat."?! Of course not.

I think this means that if Fleck is going to be offered a job that the majority of observers would regard as "better" than Minnesota, it will mean the end of RTB. I have a hard time believing he'd do that, but perhaps it's become a Catch-22. He thinks RTB and using it as a way to create a life program is the best way to run a program, but the better jobs won't integrate RTB into their brand.

Per O'Donnell:

IN THE EXTENDED CIRCUMFERENCE AROUND CHICAGO, statuses of a select major five (in alphabetical order):

P.J. Fleck, Minnesota — Pre-pandemic, the Northern Illinois alum was one of the hottest young CFB coaches in the country. … Since then, he consistently produces C-list bowl-eligible teams that garner postseason glory in low-rumble exhibitions like the Pinstripe, the Quick Lane and Duke's Mayo. … If he ever returned to DeKalb as HC, it would suggest “plateaued” or the dreaded “arced out.”

Status: All is comfortably uncomfortable in Minneapolis.

Go Gophers!!

Putting aside his evaluation of PJ, that article was incredibly hard to read with the way that guy would shoehorn in what he thought was a lot of clever phrasing.

I can see a helmet school being sold on the idea that, with upper-echelon resources, PJ could be hugely successful. And if I’m PJ and his reps I’m selling those schools on the fact that he has achieved success despite getting relatively zero support from Minnesota. Not saying I agree, but I can 100% see that happening.
