All Things Immaculate Grid-related (MLB, NBA, NFL)

Wolves, Lynx and Vikes too. Wild didn't make the cut. I got tired of trying to think of a deep pull on Vikes/Jets and typed in Brett just to get it done, but I hit the second name instead of the first one with my fat finger. Brett Favre would have given me a full grid. Stupid Brett Keisel did not work. (Not the first time this has happened to me).
For the Vikings I went with a SAM's Club.

Eagles - Sam Bradford / 13%
Jets - Sam Darnold / 19%
1 Team - Sammy White / 0.2%

I feel your pain on the slip of the finger or the last millisecond rearranging of names that thwarts my board.

I'm not sure why he's stuck in my head as a Vikings/Jets alum, but Todd Scott works. He may not have been an all time great, but he gave us an all-time great memory in housing an interception against Jim Harbaugh and the Bears on MNF back in '92.

Twins Alert on the Grid with a Coolhand 2fer special paired with the Rangers.

Nats / Matt Capps - 2%
Rangers / Danny Thompson - 0.6%
HoF /Big Ed Delehanty - 0.3%

I was shooting for overall single digit Rarity but Mickey Rivers (4%) for Tanks/Rangers pushed me to 11%.
Check it out again, my overall number went from double digits to single digits overnight.

And you are correct, I was salivating when the categories came up today. It was such a bonanza that I was able to use former Twins for the Yankees category too.

Nats/Expos: Chris Speier (.3%)
Rangers: Mike Bacsik (.05%) his biggest contribution as a Twin was his beautiful 1980 Topps card, a great action shot in the Twins' baby blue uniforms
HOF: Goose Goslin (1%)

For the Yankees (and former Twins)
Nats/Expos: Graig Nettles (.6%)
Rangers: Ruben Sierra (3%)

My Rarity went down, but not quite enough. Went from 11 to 10.

Cardinals - Gary Gaetti 13%
Marlins - Mark Redman 0.9%
Padres-Buck Buchanan (.3%)
Cards-Tom Nieto (.4%)
Marlins-Mike Redmond (2%)

I slid Gaetti into Cards/300 homers for .8%

Unfortunately, Reds/Marlins kept me from a perfect grid. April’s been a rough month for me.

I used Dontrelle Willis there. That's purely from previous Grid experience, not any actual recollection of him suiting up in Cincinnati.

Archer saved me. Otherwise, it would have lights out. And after a lot of thought, Delmon Young was the only player I could think of for the Phils/Rays square.

Thank goodness for marginal Twins!
It took me over 15 minutes to recall Chris Archer for today's Pirates/Rays square.

Whew. Day 2 only.

Sergio Romo (Giants) and Crime Dog McGriff (.300 BA Season) worked for the rest of the Rays categories.

Twins Alert on todays Grid:

Braves - Bartolo Colon / 8%
Brewers - Matt Garza / 1%
6WAR - Johan Santana / 10%

Looking at the WAR category, the 2 biggest surprises (not including the Senators) for me are Jerry Koosman & Joe Mays.

I went with...
Braves: Joe Niekro (4%)
Brewers: Caleb Boushley (.008%-my favorite UW-Lacrosse alum on the board, narrowly edging out Jerry Augustine)
6+ WAR: Bob Allison (.7%)

I'm going to have to take a look at that WAR in detail, shocked that Mays had a 6+ WAR season. WAR is such a fascinating concept to me--my most glaring example that of Dante Bichette with his nearly 2000 hits, 275 HR's, .299 batting average and his lifetime WAR sits at 5.6. In 1995, he lead the NL in hits, HR's, and RBI's and had a WAR of 1.2. Really brings into light the stadium effect/defensive liability factors, but still was mind blowing to me when I ran across the details.

I could have just as easily added Corey Koskie as being surprised that he's on the 6WAR list but former AL MVP Justin Morneau is absent.

Twins & Vikings on the grid today…
Cubs: closer from early ‘80s who was gasoline and a match (.9%)
ROY: shared the award and had a promising career cut short by a bad back (9%)
20 game: hero of ‘65 squad

Rams: HOF lineman who ran the string out with the Rams (1%)
Chiefs: one of the recent CB draft disappointments for the Vikes (2%)
10 TD’s: my first favorite Viking, #85, from the late ‘70s/80’s (1%)

I burned myself on the 10 TD square. I used this player's brother in the Chiefs/Vikes square for 0.7%, but it turns out he never reached 10 TDs, he topped out at 9.

For the Vikes I went:

Rams - Mitch Berger (0.2%)
Chiefs - Rich Gannon (4%)
10 TDs - Adam Thielen (9%)

Interesting that only 8 Vikes have cracked double digits in receiving touchdowns in a single season.

Lots of big names are NOT on the list including these guys:

Gene Washington
Ahmad Rashad
Anthony Carter
Joe Senser
Steve Jordan
Jake Reed
Kyle Randolph
Stefon Diggs

Wow, really shocked on AC being on that list, not the 10+ TD list. I did my typical cheat code, knowing that I had Moss in my pocket, so went looking for low scores and checked Jordan and Senser and then went w/Sammy White (only his rookie season did he eclipse). It is interesting, as prolific as the team has been through the air (generally speaking) since the Tarkenton era.

From those 8 that I listed, only Jordan was well short. His best was 6 TDs. Surprising, given how regular a Pro Bowler he was.

All the rest at least got to 8 TDs.

A couple of surprising close calls, both Bill Brown & Chuck Foreman got to 9.

I had the opportunity to tour Target Field yesterday on a field trip with my son's class. Downstairs kind of near the Twins locker room, there's a wall with a star for every Twins player that's ever been an All-Star. If there's a Twins/All-Star square coming up soon, I'm ready. Took lots of mental notes.

Who were your biggest surprises/obscurities?

I saw Doug Corbett 1981 and had to look that one up. Once I saw him, I remember him being an Angels pitcher, had no idea he was ever a Twin, much less an All Star. Ken Landreaux I knew was a Twin, had no idea he was an All Star. When I think token All Star representative from awful Twins teams, Ron Coomer is the one that comes to mind first (99). I now have Matt Lawton from 2000 ready to use as well.
