All Things Gophers Coaching Search Thread (rumors, tweets, tid-bits and more)

It seems like there is a lot of buzz with Niko but I don't know if it's truly his job or just that he was the "obvious" candidate so people are just trying to be first rather than actually having information. The guys that are supposed to be the insiders in the coaching world didn't even have good info on Ben Johnson's job status.

I am watching the Rams tonight and trying to talk myself in to the potential hire. In no way do I think he's bad, I just question him being the guy to come in and excite fans/donors and potential recruits and we're going to need a monster portal haul.

I think it's interesting everyone hates Dave Joerger. He'd really intrigue me, but if the fanbase wouldn't be interested then he's clearly not the right guy.
Remember the more recent poll asked us to pick just one, who we THOUGHT would be the next Gophers coach. That's not the same as asking who we hope or prefer. If you have to pick one, Niko is the most likely imo.

On McCollum, I'm not convinced Indiana wants him. Whether talent-related or not, it's a slow-pace offence and similar to the Bennett's, not for everyone.

Ben McCollum: Northwest Missouri State won four national championships, 12 regular season conference titles and eight conference tournament titles under McCollum. He won eight conference coach of the year awards and eight Division II national coach of the year awards.
That is 24 titles and he moves to Drake and wins two more titles for 26 titles..

Niko has one going into Saturday,

Richard now has 3 titles and two Conference Coach of the Year awards.

If there is any truth to the rumor he'd like to be at Minnesota and we don't hire him....well... I don't know what to say. Get it done Mr Coyle.
If McCollum does have interest in MN, then this is the time to evaluate Coyle as AD. As far as I am concerned, McCollum checks all the boxes and more. He should be the candidate that gets 80 percent of Coyles attention. The rest of the candidates combined the remainder.

If this thread is going to develop into chaos on the rumor of one guy wanting to come here, can we at least get one, even semi believable, source that the rumor is true? Shush and 60’s guy saying it, doesn’t make it true.

Hell yeah, go for it.

Even if you think he may be headed to Iowa (or Indiana or wherever), there's no reason at all not to put on the full-court press to try and sell him on coming to Minnesota.
Drive up that price for him at a minimum.

If you read the DMR account of Niko leaving Drake it sours his appeal. Partying on Tuesday with A.D. and President and telling them he is not interested in the CSU job. Then on Thursday takes the job. Not sure you can trust the man.

Not different from any other coach or normal people looking to move up or on etc.

We are on the internet...what's true?, what's a rumor? is pretty much a question that has to be asked no matter what you read or who says it?
The far greater point is the track record of Ben McCollum....that is fact. as such he should be the priority. And that is just my opinion. I do know this...if I was going to hire anybody...I'd like to talk to them in person first to make my decision. On paper, Ben is impressive.

Ya, a lot can change in 48 hours. More money, best player says he's going into the portal, wife wants to move...million possibilities can change what seemed true 48 hours ago.

Does anyone truly believe that Shama has a source that could speak on this with credibility? I legitimately think it’s his friend or neighbor talking out his ass saying”yeah I bet they’ve reached a deal.”
"Those sources include a former college basketball coach with Minnesota ties who called Sports Headliners Friday to say Medved, head coach at Colorado State since 2018, will succeed Ben Johnson who was dismissed earlier this week after four losing Big Ten seasons."

So the source is Ben Johnson.
