New Coach Short List

Could care less about woman or melatonin, but it would be an experiment. The game is different and recruiting connections are completely different.
There is no question that had she wanted to, the late Pat Summitt could have coached any basketball team in the country regardless of gender. But there aren't a lot of Pat Summitt's around period.

Honestly I could get excited about anybody at this point.

Medved is interesting to me. Someone else mentioned Tim Miles really built up Colorado State, and Larry Eustachy had success before he was fired for bad behavior (although they were 11-21 the year he was fired). Developed players like Roddy, Tonje, Isaiah Stevens, Nique Clifford. Had one down year which took some of the shine off him IMO but has since rebounded well. Will be very interesting to hopefully watch them take on NMSU.

Larry Eustachy sat in the announcing booth for a short time during a preseason tournament either last season or the season before. He was clearly drunk, and it was sad and embarassing.

Haven’t heard this name much, but if this were up to me, I’d pick Eric Henderson from South Dakota State. Younger guy, plenty of experience at Sdsu getting to the tournament, developed Scheierman, Mayo, and some other absolute studs so far. I think a young enthusiastic guy like him who can develop and identify good talent is exactly what we need right now.

He has been pretty solid so far. Only finished 3rd in the Summit this year, but with 9 freshmen on the roster.

No offense.....but HELL NO. Maybe I am simply being unrealistic, but this program needs a SPLASH! Like a Tubby hire. Someone that is going to bring in NIL---Nadine Babu tweeted earlier something to effect in terms of defending Ben that "a group of physicians refused to donate to NIL as long as Ben was coach"....she went on to say that we should support whoever is the coach. BS---the coach needs to drum up this support, either thru effort or thru reputation. Will Wade (or something to that effect) would do it. I just don't see a relative unknown like Henderson being able to do it. And let me say, he might be a fine coach, but now is not the time or place.

We could just dig up John Wooden. Prop him up by the court with a hat and some sunglasses. It'd be like a Weekend at Bernies type thing.

I don't think there is much doubt that Fleck was the hot name at the time and was a home run hire.

So who 1) is the bb Fleck and 2) will he come here?

Wade could qualify for the first part. I don't feel very confident about Wade regarding the second part.

Not sure who else would meet the "Fleck criteria" tbh.

There'd probably be a snowstorm and he wouldn't be able to make the interview.

In all seriousness, Wooden was crooked as hell like so many others, but he was the most protected coach in NCAA history. Had he come here, some douchenozzle like George Dohrmann would have exposed his bag man years before and Wooden would have been gone like Clem.

Despite what PJ said about rebuilding, which is part of what pissed off Kill so much, the program wasn't in terrible shape when he was hired. This is far more similar to when they hired Kill to replace Brew, who was arguably the worst Gopher FB hire in my lifetime. We all wanted a big time hire when Kill came here, but it was said that nobody of note wanted the job (except Mike Leach, who would have come, but the U wasn't going to touch him at the time).

Saunders has NBA coaching experience and is young with flair like PJ Fleck. That relates to players that want to get to the league. He can surround himself with good assistant coaches, but Saunders is recognizable name that kids know.
Do they know him though? What is he even doing right now?

Again....my point was that "DEI" is a dogwhistle that's being utilized to push a nasty narrative. Particularly in the past year or so. I don't think that was golfing18now's intention.
A dog whistle is a term that's not supposed to be provocative i.e., discrete or literally, recognized only by the dog. DEI is of course a very provocative and direct term.

I honestly like this.

I am pretty sure that bag man didn’t have any affect until five titles were already won.

Lew Alcindor was already at UCLA when Gilbert first started connecting with players. So they probably were gonna hit 8 in a row.

People love to trash Wooden for Sam Gilbert, but he probably only helped put a cherry on top.

Even still, without Gilbert, they still would have gotten Bill Walton.

Gilbert is all we actually know about. I'm not trashing on Wooden as a coach. Guy was an unbelievable basketball coach. But the people who put him on some kind of pedestal as the epitome of honesty and virtue are fooling themselves. And it's no coincidence that the NCAA investigation didn't go back farther than it did. Wooden was protected.

Sure, I can handle that.

I was more thinking how much sam gilbert gets overplayed on Wooden winning. I am positve He came in because woooden was winning. He was a shit head with money that needed to be around the stars.

I am also sure Wooden knew by the kate 60s that Gilbert was dirty. He probably could have told, but tall that does is tarnish shit he really did accomplish. Very likely won 8 titles without whether Gilbert is there or not. Maybe Gilbert helped with one or two.

Then Gilbert gets entrenched and starts being mafia like.

I recall reading Wooden’s replacment became deathly afraid of Gilbert.

I guess its when people use the Wooden had a bag man, in an overly simplisticly manner without the improrant details that still show his coaching as unparalleled.

Of course. Wooden was a brilliant coach. And with or without Gilbert (or whatever else may have been going on that we don't know about, if we want to be honest) he had the advantage of coaching in LA in the 60's and 70's. For whatever people want to say about LA and California in general today, what kid wouldn't want to live in southern California in that era? The culture, the weather, the pretty girls - it would have been paradise.

It's a broad term that's been bastardized to generally blame a group of people that aren't white males for problems regardless of whether the blame is warranted or not. It's a dog whistle and it's usage is increasing as a catch all.
