Cam Christie is entering the Transfer Portal

There's a rookie wage scale. He has no leverage with nba teams. His contract isn't negotiable if he's a first round pick and if he's an early 2nd round pick, there's plenty of evidence to suggest what type of deal he'll get.
He has leverage.
He can threaten to stay in college, take NIL money and mooch off his older brother who is a millionaire for the LA Lakers!

Max Christie made about $1,719,000 this season and slightly less last season.

He has to pull out of the draft by 5/29, so no he doesn't have any leverage with the NBA really.

Not money leverage. BUT....
If he is not getting positive feedback from NBA teams regarding his IMMEDIATE professional basketball future, he can go back to college ball, like Zach Edey did last year.

Sure. But teams can tell him they like him and blow smoke at him about drafting him. They have zero obligation to follow through and do so.

Yeah, and then he goes back to school and gets drafted next year. He has no leverage. It's silly to think he does.

Teams which lie to him will demonstrate their lack of integrity and in that business, integrity is important.
And his brother and parents already know who can be trusted in the NBA to tell him the truth. They went through this with his brother Max when he was drafted

I never said that. But Colorado state has outperformed us... Niko is the better coach. If we're going with d3 players... Atleast have someone in place who CAN coach em up
So, if you didn't say that, what did you say? That three Gopher starters are leaving for money and nothing to do with Johnson? Well, hell, we already know that.

Where did Colorado State finish up in the Big Ten? I think Purdue won it ... were they second?

Christie will be better next year if he is in college. I have no doubt that he will work hard on his game. That said Ben gave him more spotlight opportunity that he would have gotten at the power school level than almost anyone. Ben invested a ton in him and Christie got noticeably better during the season.
Not exactly true. Ben chose to let Hawkins control the ball and develop his incredible assist-making. If your primary goal is to feature Christie you go to a quick ball movement offense that gives the spot up shooter more open looks.

Hawkins was featured, not Cam.

None of it matters. Christie was never playing here a second year. He wants to be drafted. If late pre-draft information shows he might go late or not at all, he wants college money next year. He is a professional athlete thinking like one.

But the NBA team that is considering drafting him does care, especially if they are considering drafting someone else.
Which every NBA team is always considering.
Why would an NBA team care if he was in the portal or not? Come draft day, he’ll either be available to draft or not.

There is a point of no return where he would forfeit his college eligibility by remaining in the draft pool.

Christie is 100% gone, and Johnson’s staff has likely known it for quite some time.

If it was just Cam I would agree with you. But you couple that with Payne and Hawkins and silver lining is more like aluminum foil. And there is little to no chance we will replace him with someone that has the potential he did.

Look, none of the players is irreplaceable on their own but the 3 together are going to be difficult...and even if we do even up swap out all 3 the chances the team will be able to gel at all is slim. And it isn't like even with those guys the team was some barburner, we were likely to be a bubble team. Now?
Yes, if May 1 is the deadline for setting the roster and no additions after today. It's so hard to say because most teams competing next year for tournament spots only have seven or eight guys, just like us.

You think there are no boosters out there who would give more money to a good team than a bad team?
Real boosters give money to buy the good team. They are smart enough to know today players come first; winning later.

I think he's saying Niko is a better coach than Johnson. Which is a fact, unfortunately.
Better in what way? Did Niko recruit and develop three guys being bought off his team with big money?

It amazes me that the posters on GopherHole are so certain they know things that are unknowable.
If this was a Poker game, every player would be bluffing on every hand, and if there was an honest player in the game, he would go home a millionaire!

That isn't how this works nor does it make any sense. If any team drafts him he is gone and they know that. You are grasping at straws.

And how does the portal change that? Do you really think and NBA team is going to be blackmailed into drafting him?

Whatever you are smoking please pass some my way brother!

CBJ has had to approach this offseason as if Christie is not coming back, regardless of whether it happened via the NBA or the portal. It's just not wise to intentionally hold a roster spot for another month - if he stays in the draft, you missed a month's worth of prime portal recruiting. No one's coming here if there's only a "provisional" spot for them.

Because of this, I don't think it matters one iota whether he announces portal entry April 1 or May 1. You still have to recruit as if he's not coming back.

From Christie's perspective, not going into the portal would be a serious loss of leverage should he subsequently opt out of the draft. You box yourself in to one school, and then the school has the leverage in negotiating the NIL deal because you have no other college options at that point. The DTA could theoretically low-ball him and save the dollars for the guys that might not come/stay here. If he's in the portal, he maintains the leverage.

I think this is a problem of timing. If there was a way to make the decision date for staying in the draft the same as the portal closing date (and have that date be something close to May 1), that might make this a little better.
This is the reason for the portal decision.

He's probably 90% gone to the draft. But if he comes back to college he's probably coming back to MN because of the original reason he came here: playing time. If he goes to a blue blood he risks a reduction in playing time, role, ball-handling, game-ending shots, etc.

Ben's known this since he recruited the kid. So as this offseason happen, none of this with Christie is a surprise. The reason for the portal decision today is likely because Ben convinced him to wait until there was good news to balance out the bad. Mmm. It just so happens that two players committed today.

Christie was headed to the NBA anyways, so this announcement shouldn't get anyone riled up, but clearly has.

Most teams competing for tournament spots are starting off in a better place than we are.

A week ago everyone was using Christie as a reason why with the right pieces we could be fine without Payne and Hawkins. (and before that Hawkins and Cam were the reasons we would be ok without Payne) Now we don't have Cam...I mean you have to admit we are kind of behind the 8 ball here.

All we can go on is the info we have today, and right now it looks like we have one bonafide starter and a lot of role players. That could change or they could improve but today this roster is not very inspiring. Tomorrow it might be, but that isn't really what most of us are talking about since this is a thread about one of our top returning players leaving.

It amazes me you don't see the projection in your post! It also amazes me that you apparently have no idea how logic works...

But please tell us more about how Cam Christie is going to force the hand of NBA teams when it comes to the draft. I am sure they will really sweat his decision...if he even pretends to play hard ball they will just not draft him. He isn't going to be a lottery pick dude whoever picks him is taking him on potential and likely puts him in the G-League. Garcia would have more leverage than Cam...

If he is coming back here why make the portal announcement at all? It changes nothing and adds nothing. His position today is the same as it was a week ago.

You are right though he has almost no intention of stepping foot on a campus again as a player.

Nobody with a brain has been factoring Christie into projections for next year.

It is of no interest to project how the team will do next year before we have a roster or to compare our team on May 1 with other team rosters as of May 1. It is meaningless.

Where are we getting these players even if we have $$ now? I know numerically there are still a ton of guys in the portal, but as @bga1 pointed out, most of the top 200 are off the board. Even if the timeline has shifted some this year, it's still probably too late to think you're getting multiple impact players now. Especially if you're MN. Hopefully they have the PG signed up. Beyond that, I expect any additions to be the 7-12 spots.
Was Hawkins a top 200 player last year in the portal?
