College Basketball Transfer Portal Thread - 2024

Obviously don't know until they play, but feels like a 2-way guard who is big and scores 10 a game would be an improvement over any of the Ola-Joseph, Ihnen, Carrington transfers...getting better, but need to get a big name big.

I watched him in that NIT game they had against Ohio State. He definitely stood out - tough, strong, and a fierce competitor. Doesn't look like much of a 3 point shooter but he definitely attacks the basket strong. He didn't look like the stereotype of an Ivy League player. That was a very tight game until late.

saw some numbers from a writer on Twitter (X). over 1,100 players already in portal for D1 Men's hoops. estimated a total of roughly 5,000 players. with roughly 1,000 using up their eligibility, that means D1 is approaching 30% of all returning players in the portal and that figure could get pass 40% before all is said and done.

think about that - up to 40% of all the players in the sport could potentially move to different teams.

Don’t “need to get a big name big.” They must need to get a big that’s gonna contribute and want to be here. Big name or not doesn’t matter.

I think the point is that we need bigger impact guys. Guys like Gray are ok if they are the 8th or 9th man. If they're the best we get out the portal it won't be a good season.

Did you see his FG%? I bet he fearlessly gets to the rim.
Just looking statistically, give me 3 guys that will play their role and play it well. With diverse skill sets. Those players win games. Those are the types that get you more from the team.

Not saying your out of line. Big impact guys are awesome. Isiaih Gray types go way farther then one thinks, and they are often discounted.

This guy turns Carrington into - Bye Felicia.

Have you watched him play? If what I saw of him in the NIT game against Ohio State is indicative of his general abilities, I'd call him a 6th man at this level anyway. They need another guard and I don't know why not him. He's certainly looked like more a force than Carrington ever was.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "bigger impact guys." What I think we need are at least 8 guys who can be trusted to make solid contributions on a consistent basis. That's actually hoping for a lot since we've never had that during Ben Johnson's tenure (didn't have it for most of the time under Pitino either).

Look, I don't think we're going to get another player of Garcia's stature in the portal. I don't think we'll get a center that can match Payne's strengths either but we might get a center who can do some things that Payne doesn't do well or at all.

the one avenue we have the nets us an impact transfer is the lure of Garcia, Christie, etc.

Remember Jerome Tangs KSU squad. Tang was quoted as that was all put together by his one player. Just went out and looked for guys willing to win with him.

Much like you I saw him 1 game. But my point remains the same, if he's our best get in the portal we are screwed. Nice player as I said in a bench role, but not many guys who put up 9-3-2 in the Ivy do much in the Big 10. This why I said we need to get better players in the portal. You've made that point several times, we need 9ish guys. But we need more of that 9 to have upper level talent

Looks like a grad transfer, scored 19 against Ohio St. in the NIT
I've watched Cornell several times this year. This dude's a junkyard dog who is all over the court, plays with an New York edge and is very physical, and keeps his balance / can finish around the rim with the best of them.

Very efficient player who does several different things well that directly contribute to winning. He didn't get enough minutes for what his play warranted imo.

Gray would be incredible as a 6th/7th man and paired with Fox off the bench they could both cause headaches for opposing teams and fire up a crowd.

Also, I'm keeping an eye on Taison Chatman from Ohio State. Have heard a few rumblings (not yet sure what he'll end up deciding to do) but if he does hit the portal the Gophers would have a good shot to bring him home.

Pretty raw still and needs a full year of consistent play in a reserve role, but he definitely projects to develop into a very solid floor general as an upperclassmen.

I think if all goes well in his development over the next 18 months he turns into a Trey Alexander (from Creighton) type in his final 2 seasons. Maybe 80-90% as good. You'd take that any day of the week.

How does he fit with Asuma?

IMG_9028.jpegjust spitballing here. I wonder if there can be a Pepperdine pipeline with Mike Mitchell Jr. CBJ should at least have Mike make a quick call to Porter 😅

I’m curious as to what Ben’s recruiting pitch for transfers is. Plenty of minutes available as we will probably only have 3 guys on scholarship

There was mention of Fox potentially coming back as well so that would be 8.

Bmb was probably just doing the typical Minnesota fan of assuming the worst in all situations.
Completely forgot about Fox somehow.

thought - players looking at MN have to ask the question - how much playing time will I get?

Ben through 3 years has a track record of running with a short bench. most nights it's a 7-man rotation with an 8th guy getting a few minutes.

so if you are looking at MN as a transfer, you had better be pretty damn confident that you will be in the top 7. If you're not, you're going to spend most of your time sitting and watching.

that is the real catch-22 of the NIL/Portal era. unless you are going to fill out your bench with walk-ons, there are going to be 4 or 5 scholarship players sitting on the bench. unless you're handing out a bleep-load of NIL those guys are prime candidates to bolt as soon as the season is over.

"North Dakota State transfer Andrew Morgan was already high on #Nebrasketball. But his visit to Lincoln on Wednesday may have moved NU to the top.“This is a one-of-a-kind place. It definitely made its case for where I’m going to go next.”
