College Basketball Transfer Portal Thread - 2024

I wouldn't be surprised at all if your guess was correct but it is "baffling" as you say. If you don't play one of those players at all and hardly play the other over the last third of the season, how could either side be particularly happy?

I don't know whether it was fatigue, health issues, or both but Payne appeared to have lost a little something in the final part of the season. I really think we could use one more big man of substance who could be counted on for 20 minutes a game if needed. It wouldn't hurt Garcia to play a fewer minutes per game either.

Indiana State appeared to play only one big man against us. Maybe Johnson wants to transition to that type of lineup eventually but our front court was our greatest strength this season.

Playing with a bad back and still being our bull in a china shop may have been the culprit.

We need someone to be able to spell him as needed and go big big if warranted.

Payne also needs to learn how to play more under control. He took some really really hard falls and when you are already dealing with a sore back that can't help. Can't question his effort but he has to find a way to not go down so hard as much as he did.

Buxton learning curve.

Always rather have a big you have to reign in, then motivate to play harder.

Maybe the excess can be shared with JOJ?

I think a good pickup for one year.. not a rim protector at all even in the Summit… 26 career block total in 3 years.. laterally not real quick.. I saw him play 3 games against UST this year one game he had 2 the other 4 points.. UST would isolate him and whoever he was guarding would go right at him… plays hard decent hops and actually a decent touch from the outside.. a tad turnover prone and will commit some fouls.. I think it would be a solid pickup for the Gophers a good plug in..

Seems a little like settling to me. Hopefully be able to help more than Jack, but think still need another big besides him too.

Who are you going to get? Who wants to transfer and watch Payne play 30 minutes..

Payne doesn't play 30 minutes per game too often (only 8 times in 32 games this season). That's why I think Morgan may be a good fit. He probably lacks Payne's physicality but he can shoot from outside and could sub for both Payne and Garcia.

Not too many posts play 30 minutes a game. Between Payne staying healthy, foul trouble, and effort he gives. 20-25 min is more realistic. That leaves half a game of playing time + filling in 4 at times too. Look at Arizona. They swapped their posts. Ballo is 25 min a game this year. Plenty of people out there. More selling the team making a final four run.

If you don't have DEPTH your season takes a huge turn for the worse with an injury, sickness, or just getting getting worn out by the end of the year which maybe some of our players did this year.

Because he has confidence to shoot from outside, I think he can sub for both Payne and Garcia. I think losing offense when we go to the bench is as big of a problem, or maybe more, than losing defense when we go to the bench. This guy averaged 12.9 points per game this season while only averaging 23 minutes per game. That's 22.2 points per 40 minutes. That's the same per 40 minute average that Garcia had and higher than anyone else on our team. Sure, I think it will go down in the Big Ten but at least we know he's not a stiff on the offensive end.

Another way to put it

If C position depth chart is Payne and Morgan...what happens if one goes down? Morgan to me would be great to fill 3rd C position and 2nd to the 4 position with Grove being 3rd on the 4 position. Morgan be ok with 10-15 min of playing time helping a Big 10 team make the dance for first time in a while. Also does he just have 1 year left to play?

Afraid CBJ is setting himself up if many stay this year that after next year he will be looking for 8-10 guys again. Only has 2 freshman so far coming in next year.

This kid should be high priority IMO - I like him
He's a ton of fun to watch against Summit opponents. Tremendous vertical and gets up quick. Limited offensive game, though. Didn't look the part against Iowa State.

Kyle is going to have his pick of just about any team he wants to go to....just his defensive presence would help anybody. He's from Nebraska so that would be a logical spot. Hope we at least offer.

Good points, I will also point out that the last ~8 games he was consistently scoring more than earlier in the season. Might have turned a corner.

Some think we need a true small forward. Here is a promising one. He's a soph and played for Belmont. Was 2nd Team Missouri Valley this season and led the conference in 3 point field goal percentage.

Cade Tyson

Jevon Porter who will be a Junior next year have more than 1 year, but still lots of experience to contribute next year.
