They interviewed/contacted 11 candidates, "Many were sitting HC's" but landed on Foster. This likely means they didn't have the funds/stability to pull a sitting HC.

"They see him as a modern CEO coach..."

I don’t think that necessarily shows that they were interested interested in Fleck. But I don’t think it’s laughable that they might’ve been interested.

I have my doubts that UCLA administration is really willing to pay / play at the level ... people expect.

This guy's resume .... ooof.

Agreed, this doesn't automatically imply that PJ had any sort of offer or anything close to it, but a lot of people thought it was ridiculous that UCLA would look at a guy like PJ.

I think the college football fan world just doesn't realize UCLA administration ... just might not care.

UCLA hasn't been who the fan scuttlebutt expects them to be for a LONG time.
 



I don't consider UCLA to be a top program anymore but for arguments sake I'll call them that ... for this post.

As far as a big program goes this has to be one of the weakest resume hires to a program like that in recent memory right?



n 2012, he joined Jim L. Mora's staff at UCLA as a volunteer assistant, before becoming a graduate assistant the following year. In 2015, he became the program's director of player development and high school relations.

In 2016, he left UCLA and joined Texas Tech as its running backs coach under Kliff Kingsbury. On January 21, 2017, he returned to UCLA, serving in the same role on Chip Kelly's initial staff.

On February 12, 2024, ten days after being hired as the running backs coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, Foster was named head football coach at UCLA, replacing Kelly

Well... Chip Kelly quit as head coach at UCLA in order to become a coordinator at a real B1G school. That seems rather telling.

It sure looks like UCLA no longer resembles the Bruins of the past.

Seems like a safe play by the AD. Hometown guy, UCLA HOF member, solid pro career, and experienced with the program. He must've shown he makes up for his lack of experience in other areas. Have to imagine one of those areas is the fact that his resume demands less pay than an established HC.
 

I used to have him in fantasy football. Was a solid 3rd or 4th choice RB to get you through the lean times, which might also describe the UCLA hiring process.

Hmmm.....

Maybe Fleck could have got the job despite this last season.

Even though I had said no, maybe an extra check to Fleck would have been in order.

Does he have no recruiting experience? Has he not been working in college football for a decade? Does he have no experience working with the players and coaches in the program?

If you think there is no overlap between being a college coach, and being a college HEAD coach, then yes I guess he has no experience in anything,

UCLA should've just hired you Slab. Same amount of experience.

This doesn't really seem like a terrible hire. It's not flashy, it's not groundbreaking, but it's a safe hire in that it promotes continuity in the program (especially with the timing of Kelly leaving), and promoting a coach on staff is pretty common.

Any experience doing anything related to CFB?

My argument was that it's a safe hire to which you commented on his "lack of experience in ... everything?"

Since you weren't capable of picking up on my sarcasm, I'll spell it out for you. Foster has experience working with the team, recruiting, and coaching at the same level. With all of this in mind, I think its silly to say he has no experience, and in fact I think he has enough experience for the hire to make sense.

It seems like by your logic, no head coach should ever be hired unless they have head coaching experience. That's kinda like needing 3 years of experience to get an entry level job... It doesn't make sense.
