Houston Baptist DT transfer Kyler Baugh commits to the Gophers!

I want this guy to be some dominant DT so everything he takes down a player the crowd can say:

BAUGH BRUH!

I'm out of touch with eligibility lingo... What's "three years to play two" mean exactly?

No downside to this.

Depth never hurts unless it turns off a top notch 23/24 high schooler.

He's got 2 years of playing eligibility.. but has 3 years to do it... could redshirt
To elaborate:

the baseline thing for every NCAA student-athlete is that you have a 5 calendar year running clock that starts from I believe the first day you are enrolled at a post-secondary school. So JUCO counts too. NAIA counts. etc.

Within those five years, you get to "participate" in four "seasons".

- in every sport except football, participate literally means you set foot on a court or field of competition during an official regular or post season game. You set foot on it, boom. That's a participated season.
- a few years ago, for football only, they changed the rule to say if you only play in 4 or fewer official regular or post season games, that does not count as a participated season.

- A season has some technical definition, and part of that is that it ends with a championship. So for example, the spring "season" isn't really a season. And so on. It's pretty obvious in football, maybe slightly less obvious in some other sports.

Wow.

Houston Baptist athletic dept website didn't just remove him from the roster (ie, remove the table row and link from the roster table) ... they scrubbed his entire bio page from the site!

I guess that's what to expect from an athletic dept where the football team went 0-11 in 2021.

EDIT: they do still have his bio pages for the older seasons. I guess for some dumb reason they decided to make a separate page for the current spring (that would have 2021 info/stats) than use the previously updated page.

That was lighting quick, went into the portal on Monday, got an offer from us on Wednesday, and committed on Friday. Has to be some connection between our staff and Houston Baptist.

Worst case scenario he provides experienced depth along the D-Line, best case scenario he comes in and is ready to play.

I believe that it has to be enrolled at any college. You can take a post-graduate year at a prep school for example and not start your 5 year clock

I'm wondering how the competition level of Dallas Baptist compares with Harvard. He and Chris Smith had very similar stats.

saw a tweet that Baugh has more career tackles than any of the other DT's on the Gopher roster. I think (can't find the tweet) that Baugh had something over 100 career tackles while Tril Carter leads the other Gopher DT's with about 35 tackles.

So, experience - at a lower level.
at the very least another big body to go in the DT rotation.

IMO, it's better to have a lot of playing experience in a lower-level league, than to ride the bench on a P5. I'm all in, welcome to the Gophers Kyler :cool03::clap::cool03:

Good point! I was thinking college when I wrote that, so I'm not sure what the correct language is then.

I'd like to know that as well. Take it for what it's worth, but a poster on another site said Houston Baptist plays in a similar, or slightly better conference than Harvard?

It was better when the Southland had Sam Houston St. and Abilene Christian. The bolted to the WAC last year, and it looks like Sam Houston St. is going to C-USA in 2023.

Looks like he would fit as rush end depth! Couple clips in his reel have him pursuing downfield showing his no quit motor! I like him better than Harvard! SUM!

"They envision me fitting right in with the other guys in the defensive tackle room, and letting me get to work this summer with them. I'll be mainly a one-technique there."

He states he was a former Linebacker though so he should be able to move fairly well anyways.

Note that it doesn’t really matter as this dude is going to have a monster season and head for the draft.

But that’s the price you pay for enjoying a remarkable talent.

I think last year both the new WAC and the remaining Southland were FCS. Houston Baptist struggled mightily (I think their program is fairly new):

Incarnate Word is going to the WAC in 2022 as well. It will still be FCS and will have 8 teams, two of which are still transitioning up from DII. https://wacsports.prestosports.com/sports/fball/2021-22/releases/20220112en4son

As mentioned, Sam Houston (along with New Mexico St, which is FBS Independent) are moving to the new (decimated) CUSA starting in 2023. It's possible but unknown how likely that another of the new WAC Texas schools could join later.

Is there any tape of this guy in college? He moved really well in his high school tape playing linebacker. I honestly didn’t think Chris Smith looked particularly special and now he’s going to ND. Curious how the two compare to others.

We had some fun DLs in the earlier part of the Mason run (1999 specifically) but has been a while since we have consistently had a good defensive line. Feels like we are moving back in that direction but time will tell.
I feel like those DLs really benefited from stacking EVERYONE in the box and relying on Tyrone Carter cleaning up ... almost everything that went 5 yards beyond the line of scrimmage ;)

That's not a knock on the DL but but more an observation that at that time they were operating in a somewhat strange environment / getting lots of help / operated in a very high risk / reward manner that likely gets you BOMBED these days... or even then.

At least that's what I remember ...
