Gophers able to execute Bo Ryan's old plan for success, Make more free throws than your opponent
attempts, Easy to talk about but HARD to do, especially with guys playing 35 minutes and fighting fatigue.
Does your 1986 Iron Five reference go back to the Mitchell Lee and buddies incident in Madison? I link it to the 1973 squad after that disgraceful Ohio State stomping party. We have been better behaved since those days!
I realize that Perich arrived after being a highly sought-after recruit. Regardless of their pedigree, ALL Gopher players who prove they can perform at a high level are and will be at-risk, until another Bob McNamara rides into town.
It's like PJ says, we are a "developmental program". We have to expect to lose some really good players and we were lucky to have had Perich for two years.
Good job! I agree with so many names on your extensive list. I would also take Utecht over Spaeth, though Spaeth was a terrific blocker, as evidenced by his NFL longevity. I also would take Greg Larson at center and find room for Tom Brown and Clayton Tonnemaker somewhere on that defense.
Seems to me Pat Reusse was involved in an annual Turkey of the Year feature, either as a selector or recipient. Not sure which, could have been a muti-year winner.
The old "separation" problem needs to be addressed. It limits the kinds of routes we can run. When I see teams with enough speed to hit deep throws, I say "Oh, we don't have that play." I have hopes for Jaylen Smith, however.
I think a more experienced O-line next year will be a big help. Lindsey will be better also, provided that his "weapons" are sufficiently retained/augmented. With prices rising, that may be problematic.
