Great news! Really hope for his sake that he is deemed eligible by the NCAA and can receive a schollie this year.

Kick-a$$!!!

Congrats to Jeff. Keep it up in the classroom and on the field.

Ski-U-Mah and Go Gophers!

Pig Man. What is the difference between illegible and eligible?

I think prior to getting married my wife might have described me as an eligible bachelor whereas her mother would have said I was illegible. Hope that clears thing up.

Go Gophers!!

JJ's got the juice like OJ!

Minny is truly rising Brick By Brick!

Go Gophers! :clap::clap::clap:

As the team was going into the tunnel at the half, I thought I saw him on the big screen going in with them.

I was going to ask if anyone else saw him... on tv there was a brief camera shot of the sidelines that appeared to show Jones in street clothes on the Gopher sideline. I'm not 100% sure, but it looked like him.

per Shama:

Jeff Jones, the former Washburn four-star running back and 2013 state Mr. Football winner, is enrolled in classes at Minnesota and has the full benefits of a Gophers athletic scholarship even though he isn’t academically eligible to practice or play this fall. He needs to achieve a 2.5 GPA or better to be eligible to train with the team next winter, a source told Sports Headliners.

Go Gophers!!

I saw him talking to Mitch on the sideline during the game when i watched the replay.

Go Gophers!!

So is this the partial-qualifier thing?

That's good news, especially that he'll have access to the tutors/academic advantages that come with an athletic scholarship. Hope the young man takes advantage of the opportunity and is able to join the team during the winter.

Alright Jones, your athletic ability and effort has given you a chance that a lot of people in your academic shoes don't. I wish you the best of luck, work hard, make sure you hit the 2.5 you need (aim for 3.5 just to be safe), and here's to seeing you playing games in the maroon and gold next fall.

So if he doesn't practice or play this year, and fulfills his academic requirements to become eligible next year, would he still be considered a true freshman next year?

Good news, hope to see Jeff get fully eligible this semester and impress everyone during spring ball.

No. His 5-year clock has already started. In addition, as a nonqualifier he would technically have only 3 years to compete over 4 years beginning next year. However, he could "earn" a fourth year of competition.

But, lots of work to do or else none of it matters.

The good news is he is starting with a clean-slate. He has no college GPA, so he just needs to maintain a 2.5 going forward, he is no longer needing to vastly overperform the bar in order to drag up an average which had been polluted by multiple semesters of below-standard work like he was his last year in high school.

But "earning" a fourth year of competition (in his fifth year of college) only requires him to have made 80% progress towards his degree through four years.

Also, by "lots of work to do" you mean averaging a B- in entry level college courses with the help of tutors. I am confident in the young man.

Can he attend, and not participate in, practices, film, etc.?
