All Things RB Jeffrey Jones Thread

How can Jeff go there if Emily is here? Lets start recruiting Emily to Minnesota! Maybe we can get her a full scholly in the Sports Management program.

Jeff Jones is an elite talent.

Here's hoping he opens the floodgate for elite talent to the U of MN.

Good luck young man.

I was very impressed with his performance in the UnderArmour. He has a nice combination of quickness, power, vision, and elusiveness. He also looked good catching balls out of the backfield. I think he would fit perfectly into Kill's offense. He could be the face of the program and I REALLY hope he stays in MN.

Hope you stay home Jeff, look at what happened to Seantrel Henderson. #1 recruit in country, chose the helmet school and now is maybe going to be a mid round draft pick. Rashede stays close to his inner circle and gets the hometown treatment at The U and will now be a 1st round draft pick.

This is the key. Jeff Jones is a phenomenal football player. He will succeed anywhere.

BUT

Jeff Jones has a unique opportunity at Minnesota. Not only can be become the face of the program and a local hero, but here Jones can play in an offense designed to primarily feature the team's best RBs. At Minnesota, Jeff Jones can be a hometown hero, be the face of the program, and get 25+ carries a game if he wants.

Anywhere else, JJ will be an elite player, but he'll be like any other elite player.

Jeff, choose the Maroon and Gold and you won't regret it. You will immediately become the biggest fan favorite on the team.

Our offense fits Jones well. Kill and staff are still building the line and pieces to for titles but progress has clearly been made. If we take a step back for a minute and look at what Cobb was able to produce this season (1200 yards rushing) without becoming a full time starter until about the midpoint of the season and with only one senior on the OL (and he was injured half the year) a player like JJ, who has more natural talent and athleticism, should be licking his chops at the opportunity.

Florida has a big name but there is a reason they're switching coordinators and OL coach. Their HC is a defensive guy and doesn't have the set philosophy on offense. Muschamp came in to Florida at the same time Kill and staff came to Minnesota. He wants to run the football but he hasn't proven he knows how to build the staff and that is why he is starting over rather than making clear progress.

Michigan is in much the same position. Hoke is a D-line guy. He has an aging coordinator that he has worked with and had success with in the past but they're struggling to build the pro-style offense. I mean they had negative rushing yards in back-to-back games this year and one of those was against a Nebraska team that we gashed for 271 rushing yards against. I don't care how good the running back is he needs an OL to open holes and showcase his skill. Michigan does not have that and given that Hoke & staff have been there as long as Kill & staff there is no indication that situation is getting better or that there is the same commitment to running the football.

Offensive philosophy and building block-wise, Minnesota is actually the most stable situation and is making the most progress to take the next step. It is odd to say but Minnesota actually has more coaching stability and is doing the better job of building what would make Jones a stud back.

Not to mention, local pressure would have Muschamp playing his local 5* running back instead of a recruit he pulls out of Minnesota because he has to go back to those high schools and talk to those coaches for their future recruits. Local pressure in Michigan would be to play their 5* #1 in the country RB that he brought in this year. Local pressure in Minnesota would actually work in JJs favor because people want to see their local recruits do well.

Just my two cents on the situation.

Not saying he'll win the Heisman, but why isn't it possible? He's got the talent for that kind of achievement.

Yeah the dude just won MVP of one of the most decorated all-america high school football games in the country. I'd say it's possible for him to win any number of individual awards, no matter where he goes.

Jeff please stay home. Gophers need you! Dont be someone elses second option. Gophers fans have suffered long enough. We finally coming up. Kill will get the best out of you. Maroney, Barber, and the next great Jeff Jones. Stay home buddy, but like everyone else said, have fun at your visits, but hurry on home.

People get weird when it comes to recruiting. We all know he is a great player. We all would love to see him as a Gopher and believe he could be a state hero. But the decision is his choice. What are people arguing about?

The things some people try to argue are just silly. Please don't call out a high school athlete for taking time to make a decision. His choice affects him in more ways than only football. I had enough difficulty making my college choice without people who have never met me nagging me to go to one place over another.

He
Give me a break. That's fine if you don't agree with him. What is wrong with being positive and excited about a player? He made a comment that he sees a Heisman in the future. So what?

I just don't understand people who get so bent out of shape when someone dares to be excited and dream big.

Exactly. This is probably one of the few fan bases that enthusiasm and excitement is met with ridicule.

But on the other side of the coin, long time Gopher fans have been jaded by repeat disappointment.

I can see both sides but the constant propensity of some to dwell on the past instead of enjoying the present has worn my patience thin numerous times.

Winning the Heisman requires everything, team and individually, comes together at the same time. Lets not forget that only 3-6 players each year get invited to NYC. It's a big dream but its not impossible.

While this late surge in offers for Jones worries me considerably, I really like the Gophers chances. This is going to be a long month but I have confidence in the relationship Kill and Co. Have established with Jones.

I hope JJ decides to be the next in line of great Gopher RBs. Lawrence Maroney, 1st round pick of NE Patriots, 2006. Marion Barber III. 4th round pick of Dallas Cowboys, 2005. Pro Bowl 2007.

BTW - Since it was my (complimentary) post that JJ first responded to here, and since others on this site feel we can impact decisions with our posts, it goes to reason that if he comes to the U, I will be one reason why. Go Spoofin!

All Jeff would need to do to get a few votes in the heisman would be to rush for at least 1700 yards and have at least a 10 win team, both are very realistic, even somehwat expected, it is delusional if you think he will win it but it is very realistic to expect him to be somewhat in the converasation, i mean Cobb ran for 1200 without being the starter for the first few games, he could have ran for about 1500 if he was the clear cut #1from day 1 and Jeff will have a much better O-line then David had this year and he should get more carries since there will be a much bigger drop off in talent at the position with jeff to Berkley then Cobb to Donnel, and for wins i think we win 9 or 10 next year and 10 or 11 in 2 years

i don't know if that's what's expected. Given we have some talented backs, the carries should be shared more. And let's hope to god we can throw more effectively in the coming years. plus if we really start showing we can pound the rock, the RB recruits will start to take notice.

Great to see you post here again, GrunkieJr. You always bring a touch of sanity to the forum, imho

So, if you're really Jeff Jones, and you say you'll take my bet of $500.00, then tell me this. Why did you state a few posts further down that we're in your "top 3"? If you're willing to bet $500.00, that must mean you're coming to Minnesota. Yet, you claim that you've only narrowed it down to 3. Which one is it? Enough with all the games and getting people to beg you to come here. Be a man and tell the University of Minnesota that you're coming to Minnesota if that's your selection.

Jeff, you probably know you don't need an account to look at the threads. I will say most Gopher fans are not like this poster. We all want you to be our RB badly! Rashede Hageman (Washburn/Gophers) is being put as high as #14-#15 in the NFL Draft. Come carve the same path out!

In the past decade, the Gophers have produced 3 RBs who would all play in the NFL.

Marion Barber- Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears (Pro-Bowler)
Laurence Maroney- New England Patriots, Denver Broncos (Played in Super Bowl)
Gary Russell- Pittsburgh Steelers (Won a Super Bowl)

Jeff Jones- Could be next in line!

actually Michigan will have 5 RBs on scholarship next year, a former five star, 2 four stars, a 3 star and a 2 star

Florida has scheduled an in home visit with 4 star Oregon RB commit who is rated about as highly as Jeff, so Jeff, the Oregon commit and Durrell Scott are all being recruited by Florida and all are of equal talent, that makes me feel a little better then Jeff being their only RB target

I will literally sprint through my office building screaming if Jeff Jones signs with the Gophers. Will be a big day for my favorite team.

FYI, we deleted a number of recent posts in this thread that included some bickering back and forth. Please keep this thread on topic, and in good taste. As we're reminded today, many recruits read and post in these threads. Please keep that in mind.

ya don't say...hmmmmmmmmm..."somewhat expected".....sounds easy

Wait, what?

If we want to eventually become big ten title contenders we're going to have to beat out the helmet schools for recruits every once in a while. The Eric Murray's of the world are great and you can field a competitive team with low-rated recruiting classes as long as you develop players and they fit your system, but to take that next step you need to supplement these classes with a few impact guys with elite talent. There's no better time than now to keep players like Ragnow and Jones home. It's time for the coaching staff to put up or shut up and flex their recruiting muscles.

While the Florida and Michigan offers are worrisome, neither one of these teams have developed a relationship with Jones or his family for a few years like the Gophers staff. I'm confident these teams are too late. Not to mention, both teams had disappointing seasons leading to both coaches being on the hot seat (Muschamp moreso than Hoke), and both have highly rated freshman RB's almost guaranteed to get carries next year. Jones wanted more exposure and wanted to take a few visits, he has the opportunity now. In the end, I still think he ends up a Gopher and realizes the advantages to staying home and playing for the U are too good to pass up.

And for the record, I'm sick of the Minnesota sports fan defeatist attitude already showing up on message boards and twitter. The fans are part of the problem as to why talented in-state players go elsewhere if better offers are on the table.[/QUOTE]

I agree.
