For some reason I am not really surprised by this. Too bad, he had potential. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall...I wont forget his game against IA though.

I assume theoretically he would then still have two years left to play if he decided to come back the following year. He has not used his red shirt year yet.

it's likely he see his future in track and he's ess likely to realize his potential there if he is injured playing football.

Well that about does it.... for Wolitarsky's redshirt that is. Give me a kid with sure hands and football acumen over a trackster any day. Best of luck to DCT and his future in track. Will also be intersting to see if this impacts where Donavohn Jones may play though Wolitarsky is probably more polished at this time for immediate playing time at receiver based on his past accomplishments and body habitus.

Ditto to these thoughts. It's a blow, but I can't help but think if it appeared he was gonna be one of the top line guys, this decision wouldn't have been made. On the Iowa game, I thought that was gonna lead to so much more.

Here's to him winning a title on the track then.

I am not one for predictions and I wouldn't say your comment is one either. It is a sure thing.

With Harbison back and McDonald now healthy it's not a big deal.

If your not totally committed to football and the rigors, that's when you get hurt. Your level of concentration is just not there. Best of luck to DCT. He's a great kid!

Already thin at the WR group and more questions than answers any loss at the position is a big deal.

Fall is when the track athletes do their hard training for the season, that's when they get better, and it sounds like he is top flight.

I don't think they're thin. I think it's more of a lack of "the man" than anything else. The WRs remind me of the Patriots group when they were winning Super Bowls. A bunch of capable guys with no one really standing out.

We have more room for people to step up and will like to see what McDonald can do now that he is back. And how Harribson recovers from his injury. I liked what I saw out of Engel and Issac near the end of the season.

We have 11 scholarship receivers and 5 walk ons. As said has been said already, we have bodies but we don't have a clearcut rotation.

I was thinking he'd be the odd man out this season. This isn't a big loss IMO.

+2 I think that a true deep threat is always an asset. I aqree with Ruppertflywheel. If you're not 100% in it, that is when you can get hurt.

Maybe after a year totally focusing on track, he may elect to return.

Crawford-Tufts To Focus On Track And Field

Devin Crawford-Tufts was a member of both the football and men’s track and field team at Minnesota during his sophomore year in 2012-13. For the upcoming 2013-14 academic year, Crawford-Tufts will participate only in track and field and will not be a member of the football team.

“Devin and I have met multiple times over the past couple of months, and he has decided to focus on track and field for the upcoming season,” said Minnesota coach Jerry Kill. “Devin is a fine young man. We wish him well and will be rooting for him.”

Crawford-Tufts made 24 catches for 345 yards in 21 career games for the Gophers. His lone touchdown reception came against Texas Tech in the Meineke Car Care Bowl last season. Crawford-Tufts, who was a Minnesota state champion in the 100 and 200 meters in high school, joined the track and field team in February 2013. He went on to finish fourth at the Big Ten Championships in 60 meters.

1500: Gophers WR Crawford-Tufts' departure not ideal, but not a major loss

Crawford-Tufts' departure comes less than a week before the Gophers are slated to open preseason training camp.

While the loss of Crawford-Tufts is not ideal, it is not a total shock, nor is it as big of a blow to the already questionable receiving corps as it may look on the surface.

Crawford-Tufts, who split his time between football and track last season, spent his first two years battling reoccurring injuries, most notably with his hamstrings, while seeing only on mild success on the field.

FSN: Gophers WR Devin Crawford-Tufts leaving football team

The Gophers were hoping Crawford-Tufts could help strengthen the rather inexperienced wide receiver corps this year. The speedy Edina, Minn., native had 16 catches for 189 yards as a sophomore last year. During his freshman season in 2011, Crawford-Tufts caught eight passes for 156 yards in nine games.

DCT for a scholarship at the trade deadline seems like a good deal to me.

Let's hope wally doesn't do the same and sticks with basketball, I guess there is a lot less chance of injury in basketball but he is better then Devin at track and field

Tell that to the kid that missed half of last season injured.

There'd been talk of things regarding DCT for a while now. It just never seemed like he enjoyed football, specifically the physicality of it that much. He sure didn't enjoy getting jammed at the line by DB's or blocking.

As a gopher track alum, this is exciting news. As a football fan, I would have liked to see what he might have become in the future. Regardless, good luck DCT. Bring the big ten title back where it belongs!

I'd say the group is inexperienced, but we have a bunch of diffident types of guys at the position. Most seem able to catch the ball, which is kind of a big deal...
