12/27 - Rashad Vaughn will NOT attend the U

I like our chances with Vaughn. Come be the man. D. Hollins, Vaughn and Travis would be exciting. Throw in Eliason and Ellenson and it would be exciting.

Saw Vaughn on Sunday at EYBL. He buried a few 3's and had a couple dunks against NJ Playaz. He seemed like the best player of all the Playaz on the court. We left early in the second half, because Burton34 had to go eat dinner with his mommy and daddy; however, we managed to snap this picture of Vaughn during warm-ups.

That's one high quality photo...

I had a great time watching Rashad and Sandy light up the NJ Playaz. Rashad is easily the best MN high school player I've ever seen. Unfortunately, Stryker and his Dad ate all the popcorn and candy at the EYBL so I had to go home and get fed by mommy and daddy.

After the tournament I've really grow on Tyus, and like one recruiting analyst said... It might take you until your 4th or 5th time watching him to really appreciate his game, and that was the case with myself. Scoring, passing, defense, IQ, ball handling, etc... He does it all so well. It's obvious he is going to be a team leader in college.

That being said, Rashad has more talent, and part of what makes hi, special is he is lengthy for a SG, so he can rebound with the best of them even so in college, finish at the rim, his perimeter shot is great, he can create, and if trained right, should be a pretty good passer. I think his effect on the gophers could be so great it would be unmeasured.

The best part: Unlike Tyus, I feel good about our chances with Rashad.

i find it hilarious that wisconsin offered rashad.. whats their pitch going to be?.. hey come take 6 shots a game and be prepared to hold the ball at half court for 30 seconds.. oh and i hope you love Defense!! hahaha stupid wisconsin, u wont get anymore minnesotans bo you moron..

Bo goes crazy with recruiting. He offered Carlton Bragg, a 6'9" SF/PF who is from Cleveland, a likely 5-star in the 2015 class, and Bragg's strength is using his athleticism to get out and run the floor. Bo dares to dream, gotta give him that - no way Vaughn would give them a second thought. Not sure why Bo even bothers to offer some of the guys he offers from out of state.

Can't win unless you play haha, might as well throw it out there, see if anything sticks.

Appease the fan base that is constantly crying out for more athleticism.

I hate Bo. But c'mon man. How can you say that? He just beat out OSU (your team) for 4-star Nigel Hayes (Toledo, Ohio native).

Are you sure about that? I know one of the OSU reporters said Hayes never had a committable offer from OSU at the time he decided to go to Wisconsin, that he tried to commit to OSU and they told him to wait, eventually he decided to stop waiting and picked Wisconsin. So in fairness keep in mind that you're relying on the player to say who has offered and who hasn't. At any rate, Hayes is not in the same ballpark as a 5-star recruit that everyone wants like Vaughn anyway.

UW offered Vaughn some time ago, long before he was a top 10 prospect in the class. He also visited Madison at least twice. As he grew into the home run prospect that he is now, UW faded and they haven't spent much time on him.

Bo and his staff have done a really nice job of identifying and offering kids early, but landing them has been much more difficult, especially when they develop into prospects who recruited by big time programs.

STrib: Catching up with Rashad Vaughn

When did you first hear from new Gophers coach Richard Pitino? I guess the day he got the job, he called me that night … He knows he’s got to start recruiting us now cause he’s new, so it made me feel good that he called on the first day.

You’ve been recruited by Minnesota all this time, and Tubby Smith, and now there’s a total change of coaching staff. Is that weird for you? Yeah, kind of. But I talk to them a lot, I’ve got a good relationship with them and coach Kimani and when it was (during) open period he was at mostly every game, so I think they’re doing good recruiting.

How is the new staff's recruiting style different than Smith’s? He [Pitino] is young, so he knows how to relate. Tubby, I talked to him every now and then and I’d see him every now and then, but them, I see them a lot and I talk to them every other day.

I know you were close with Vince Taylor. Was it weird for him to leave the picture? I don’t really talk to him no more, but he called me every now and then.

Is Minnesota one of the schools that’s contacting you the most right now? Yeah, they’re one of them.

What’s the next step for you? Do you have any officials set up right now? No, none right now that I know of set up.

You’re planning on doing some though, later this summer or fall? Yeah, I probably take an official. I don’t know where, but I’m going to try to get out there and take an official.

Do you want to take all five? Yeah.

I know you’ve done unofficials at North Carolina and Iowa State. There are rumors that you nearly committed to UNC when you were down there. Is that true? Na. I went and talked to my parents about it but we all decided to just wait until the time was right, so we didn’t do it.

Hey, I get it. I’m from North Carolina. Tarheel fan, even though my Gophers readers hate me for it. It was a good atmosphere, I’ve got a good relationship with all the coaches.

Do you have an idea of when you want to make a decision? Sometime in my senior year.

Do you have a list of favorites right now? Nope, no favorites.

Are you going to make one? I mean, you’ve got to narrow it down at some point, right? Yeah. Sometime. I got no timeline of when I’m going to do that, but I’m looking to do that.

The word is that you’re considering transferring for senior year, perhaps to Huntington Prep. Anything to that? Yeah, I thought about it, but I’m not sure about it right now.

And what would go into that decision? Just to play good competition every day and get prepared for that next level.

Go Gophers!!

The part that REALLY concerns me here is that he talked to his parents about possibly committing to UNC right there and then. That's shows that they are currently his favored choice.

He said he'll wait until the time is right to committ. Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but doesn't that mean he's just going to wait until a later date to commit to UNC?

It's pretty clear that he meant he will wait until the time is right to commit somewhere, not necessarily UNC. There has been word that he has cooled some what on the Heels but who knows. To be honest, there really isn't anything to be gleaned from that update. No new info whatsoever.

I really hope the Tarheels and his front have cooled on each other, and the Pinson and Jackson combo doesn't hurt the Gophers that's certain.

I wouldn't be too worried. He thought about committing early to Baylor before deciding "to wait until the time is right," too.

Seriously, his trip to UNC was on march 9th. That was well over 2 months ago. A lot can/has happened in that time. Relax and lets see how he feels going forward.

per Shama:

Rene Pulley doesn’t know if the Gophers will land any of the Big Three but Vaughn might be the most likely to play at Minnesota. “He has always wanted to embark on his own trail,” Pulley said. “Since the U is down on talent, he could trail blaze.”

For some reason I think he knows where at least two will play....

Pulley and Rashad have had previous conflicts as noted, so it seems as if Rene Pulley is getting back at Rashad by saying he plays where the talent isn't. (Playground Elite instead of Pulley)

And also, I don't know where I stand with Rene Pulley dissing the Gophers by saying basically we don't have talent. The Hollins bros seem pretty talented to me...

Nothing about this interview should be concerning. When he supposedly thought about committing, Tubby was still our coach. A LOT has changed since then. They have two 5-star wings committed already and Jerry Meyer (used to be the head recruiting guy at Rivals, but is now with 247Sports) has said that he feels UNC pushed for the Pinson commitment because they didn't feel good about where they stood with Rashad. I will be very surprised if Rashad plays for UNC.

He tweeted it. I posted it a couple pages back, but I'll copy and paste it. His tweets are in bold, the others are random people.

@mazsmith2: @jerrymeyer247 do you think Pinson commitment affects UNC landing Rashad Vaughn ?
@jerrymeyer247: @mazsmith2 I'm thinking UNC pushed Theo Pinson for a commitment cause they aren't feeling good about Rashad Vaughn.
@frankwilheel: @jerrymeyer247 @mazsmith2 Nah. UNC always needed 3 wings in this class. If its not Vaugh its booker, russell, hill, or lacey
@jerrymeyer247: @frankwilheel @mazsmith2 don't disagree but think things have cooled w Rashad Vaughn & UNC and part of why push for a Theo Pinson commitment

Rene Pulley showing his true colors. It's all about his program and his ego. He does the U no favors.

Pulley champions the attitude that, if you choose to attend Minnesota, you're "settling." I wonder how many athletes he's steered away from the U.
