Long-time lurker, first time poster here,

I graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNLV's older and better brother) last year and have no connections to Minn. or the Gophers, but I stumbled on to the Gopher Sports channel on Youtube last winter. I was struck by how positive Coach Kill presented himself and how much faith the Gopher Nation has in their football team. Long story short, I became a fan of the Gophers from afar and I'm excited to see them rebuild and take on the Big10 this year. Just wanted to drop in officially and wish you all the best this year.

P.S. I lived in Las Vegas for 10 years and if I can answer any questions about the city, UNLV's stadium and team, or the sights and sounds of downtown I'd be happy to help and make the trip out West a little better/ more fun.

Been going out to Reno/Tahoe for quite a few years and following the Wolf Pack for the last few. That Offense has been a lot of fun to watch. Hope to see a Gopher/Wolfpack series sometime in the future.
 


Well, the nearest bar to Sam Boyd Stadium is IN Sam Boyd Stadium. The state's libertarian attitude can be thanked for that. But, of course, the prices at concessions will be high. I found the selection and service to be decent the last time I was there. Just be aware of the Rebel fans; they've been hungry for a good start for a long time and they can be nasty if things go south (or, for that matter, very rude if things go well for them.)

As far as bars outside the stadium, it really depends on a lot of things: where you're staying, how much do you want to pay, what kind of atmosphere are you looking for, etc..

I can recall a fun tequila bar located inside the T.I. casino. They had a great selection of tequila and it had a good atmosphere as well. It's called the Margarita Bar.

If you're into some very nitty/gritty bars, old downtown is the place to be. You'll be guaranteed to meet tons of interesting characters there.

If you want a classy bar, you generally can't go wrong finding one inside one of the classier casinos (Paris, Bellagio,Venetian, or Mandalay Bay). I strongly recommend Red Square inside Mandalay Bay, it's a very sweet bar made from ice. I would also highly, highly recommend the Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill inside Caesar's palace. It's a classy restaurant, so be forewarned.
 

I've been all over Europe and the US (except MN, of course) and, in my opinion, Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

The pistol offense has done wonders for our football team and I think it goes without saying that Coach Ault IS Nevada football. I'd love to see Nevada take on the Gophers. In a couple of years, I think that would make for an excellent series between our two schools.

Just an FYI; it's actually Wolf Pack, not Wolfpack. NC State is the Wolfpack and there was a lawsuit between the two schools some time ago regarding the branding of the two schools.

Hehe. I actually never saw the show, but I do know that Lt. Dangle led the homecoming parade one year. Booty shorts and all. It's was nice to know Reno had a sense of humor about it.

The article claims "The Technician reports that the National Collegiate Athletic Association has over 1,000 member schools, yet only two - NCSU and Nevada - have mascots involving wolves." Northern State's (South Dakota) teams are called the "Wolves" and their mascot is "Thunder the Wolf".

NC State's logo and Nevada's logo are very similar, but I don't think any school can claim exlusive rights to a name, just look at how many schools use "Wildcats".

I'd imagine it is, but I think they sell some others (Sam Adams, if I recall correctly). If they have Northern Nevada's microbrew Icky IPA (after the state fossil, Ichthyosaurus) I would recommend that. It's probably best to BYOB your own in the parking lot. Don't worry about the liquor prices or locations either, hard liquor is sold everywhere in the state and there are no ABC stores either.

What little I know about Trademark Law, you can't trademark standard usage, but you can non standard usage. NCSU might have been able to defend Wolfpack but they could not prevent the use of Wolf Pack.

In addition to NSU (where I had the misfortune of attending for a year to get my teaching certification), Kaler's old stomping grounds at Stony Brook have the Seawolves. I'm almost positive there are others.

I don't know whether or not a school can trademark their nickname or not. Perhaps the first team to use the name Wildcats could have at one point trademarked their name. There is one other Wolfpack out there, Loyola New Orleans.

A number of other schools use some sort of variant on the wolf for their nickname:

Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves
Stony Brook Seawolves
Western Georgia Wolves
Western Oregon Wolves
Alaska Anchorage Sea Wolves
Arkansas State Red Wolves
Cheyney Wolved
Colorado State - Pueblo Thunderwolves
Northern State Wolves
 

I would say that is truly a pack of wolves you put together RodentRampage. I wonder how many rodents you need to have a pack?
