Phil Miller: "Post-Bennett Gophers 'in good shape' at RB, Kill says"

Thanks for posting, dpo. This is the second quote i've seen from Jerry saying he can't talk about recruiting (and I know he is prohibited from talking about players till they sign) and implying that things are better than he can tell us. hmmmm, very interesting.

Class of all 5-stars comin' in!

It bodes well that Kill feels we're in good shape at RB since he's a straight shooter and knows 1000x more than me, but I don't see it yet. Next to the secondary, it looks to me like our weakest area heading into next year. The Gophers will not turn the corner until we have 1-2 players that have a legitimate shot at 100 rushing yards each game.

Who needs a RB that can run when you've got Gray carving up defenses through the air and on the run? Perhaps Kill is referring to a better blocking back.

Including the QB?

I think we will be in pretty good shape if we have a QB who can run the ball near Gray's level and a RB who can reach 1,000 yards. There really aren't many teams who are going to have 2 RBs that have decent chances of reaching 1,000 yards on a given season.

I'm not expecting a repeat of the Barber/Maroney years where we have two 1000 yard backs. What I'm saying is that we need a legitimate 1000 yard back, and enough depth where if the #1 back goes down, the 2nd guy on the depth chart is good enough where he could string together a few 100 yard games, or at least would have the potential to do it. And it needs to be 2 RB's, not Marqueis or a different QB. That is the type of depth a good team has. Right now, everyone is shocked if we get a 100 yard rushing game from a back, and I think we've only had one all year (Bennett vs. Iowa) w/o looking it up.

I think we have plenty of other positions to worry about instead....

When your top back is a senior with 450 yards through 10 games, and the second best running back (Kirkwood) is a Redshirt Freshmen w/ 205 yards on the year, I'd beg to differ.

When your offensive line is starting a true freshman walk on running backs' stats don't tell the whole story.

On his radio show yesterday, Kill described Foster Bush as his best O Lineman - and Bush is one of five OL redshirting. With all the experience the current OL is getting this year and with everyone including the OL and RB's getting another year of lifting and conditioning with Kline, I expect the whole offense and especially the running game to be exponentially better next year.

This.

I think Kill likes what he has with Kirkwood, David Cobb, D. Wright, and the incoming JUCO as far as backs. Is anyone else redshirting that will compete for carries?
During same interview he really gave the impression that Edwards didn't want to play anywhere but RB, saying he's doing what's best for the team at the moment.

I'm not as concerned with the offensive backfield, I'm hopeful one or two will rise to the top.
