Tubby Smith bringing in two recruits

I can't seem to find any updated info on Brooks. Rivals doesn't have him rated and Scout has him at two stars which seems a little odd. Why would Tubby, desperately seeking an impact player, target such an anonymous prospect? I guess if he is good enough for Maryland and GTown he is good enough for me.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recruiting/player-Henry-Brooks-73362 You didn't look very far - Rivals has Brooks as 3 Star sought by many schools.

Like the other poster said, you obviously didnt look very hard on rivals. The kid has offers from Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Harvard, Maryland, Xavier, NorthWestern, 3 star on rivals. 6-8, 215lbs obviously very smart with offers from Harvard, NW & Rice ha. So why the hate??

I'm not hating. I just get nervous building a program around 3-star, non top 150 prospects, that's all.

Some of the info on sites gets to be very dated... sounds like along with us, Tennessee and Mizzou are the bigger players as of now...

Brooks looks pretty damn good. I'm worried about Tennessee, but maybe all the drama around Pearl will scare Brooks off. It's more likely Pearl will be out at UT, than Tubby here.

I think Rodney is the where the scholly will open. I think he's going pro, whether he anyone think he's ready or not. Everyone is concentrating on Trevor, but I think he'll come back. Rodney will be the one to go I think.

We'll see what happens.

Brooks was excited about the offer. “I don’t know what I’m going to do yet, but it was good news. Tennessee has a great basketball program and it’s close to home so my friends and family can see me play. I’m definitely very interested.”

Mbakwe was Top 150 in 2007.

Sampson and Iverson were Top 150 in 2008.

Williams was Top 150 in 2009.

Walker was Top 150 in 2010.

Hollins and Coleman are Top 150 in 2011.

Did you forget them?

Must be poor coaching then?

And just one of them has performed like a Top 150. The Beast. Walker may get there someday but the other three have been what? Top 500?

I hope Trevor goes pro. As this year has proven once again, there are no certainties in college except for not getting paid. MSU has lost players; Minnesota has lost players. Key players get injured. I want to see Trevor getting paid.

Yep - if he can get paid (NBA or Europe, wherever) he should go.

Paid playing basketball? Mbakwe wouldn't make the Timberwolves roster and they are the worst team in the league. You honestly think there is a lot of interest in a player like Mbakwe by NBA teams? He has to learn to shot first. Players who are 6'10 in the NBA don't miss open shots from 15 feet. Teams the Gophers play basically beg Mbakwe to shot from 12 to 15 feet. He is the same age as Love and Beasley. Beasley was the best player in the country, is taller, more athletic and averaged 26 and 13 as a freshmen in college. He was basically given to the Timberwolves for salary cap room. I look at the Wolves roster and there is no one he could beat out for a roster spot at this time.

He can still go to Europe and make a hell of a lot more than the average person would be making at a normal job. And he'd be in Europe -- awesome experience.

What is the average salary of a pro bball player in Europe?

the leagues really vary in salary structure. The bottom leagues (Kevin Payton actually played for money here) pays about $30,000 plus free housing and meals. On the other end of the spectrum Kahlid El Amin plays in a league that I have seen him making over $500,000 per year. (I can't remember where or when I saw that so if it was from a Sid column, I apologize for the factual error in advance)
I remember hearing about another former Gopher a couple of years back coming back in mid-season because the paychecks were bouncing anyway. Some of the Euro economies have struggled.
I don't see his game fitting the Euro leagues as well as it fits the NBDL though. You have to be able to shoot a jumper consistently to play in Europe. Apparently Ricky Rubio is the exception to this thought though.

Rick Rickert was a pretty big deal in New Zealand if i remember correctly

There is no doubt that Mbakwe could make money playing basketball some place next year. He could possibly even make the NBA. The point was that some of you are under the impression that he would just decide to go pro and easily go right to the NBA. It certainly isn't, pardon the pun, a slam dunk that he makes a roster or is even drafted. He has to improve his shot if he is going to be successful there, and I think he would be better off playing another year at the U. That's why if I had to guess he will be back at the next season.

Agreed. TM is a phenomenal rebounder, but not a consistent scorer yet.

I'm in agreement with the general consensus- he has potential to be an NBA player. But as of now, he doesn't have the jump shot, a go-to scoring move, or the ball handling skills (even of a big man). He is a phenomenal rebounder, he's a good finisher around the basket, and he plays with great intensity. The tools are certainly there, but he would (in my opinion) need a good deal of work because his superior athleticism wouldn't be so superior in the NBA.

The question is: does he think he can learn those things better in the NBA or at the U? I definitely hope to see him back here as I love watching him play for us.

This is the right thread to have an even dumber post than the original. I hope trevor will be here, Rodney might as well go pro, he is doing nothing here, and it aint Tubby's fault. The NBA sucks anyway you watch it.
