Just scanning the board and I am surprised by the hyperbole on the board. Less than two months on the job and one guy has him up with CEO's FOrtune 500 companies. Another guy is promising six wins next year. Give the guy a break. This is going to be a major building job and this is his first job EVER at a BCS school, assistant or head coach. Only two members of his staff have ever coached at a BCS school. This is a tough job and maybe only Indiana is a tougher one in the Big Ten. He just took a beating on a the recruiting trail. Stop, take a step back, and give the guy a break.

Many of you were guilty of this same exact talk when Brewster came on board, slow down...........

I think most of the people praising Coach Kill on the boards are being pretty realistic about what they expect to see. I'm very excited about what I think he's bringing to the table, but if I keep hearing the right things I won't be even remotely concerned if the next couple of years are still a struggle.

I don't see what's wrong with having expectations. When Kill was selling himself for this job he wasn't preaching managed expectations.

And anyways I hardly think 6 wins is a lofty goal.
 

He made it very clear time and again that it will take two to three years before we can gauge how well the program is after the current players take time to develop. IMHO, once the players buy into the disciplined hard work they'll start winning more games. We all know winning improves a lot of things including attracting higher rated recruits. It will take time.

Not a fan of the hire, eh? Is it because he loves the sweet, sweet lord?

After the last four years, I'm a little shocked at how quickly peeps here have bought part and parcel into the KILL message and claiming he's our savior. I like KILL as he seems like a genuine guy and he's saying all the right things; but we all liked Brew and thought he was saying all the right things, too. Can we just temper the hyperbole (on both sides...I don't get the 'KILL is the suck' viewpoint either) for once and give him a year or two to do his thing?

This is not going to be anywhere near the major building job that faced Brewster when he took over from Mason. It should be a disappointment to Gopher fans if they don't win at least 5 games this year. I personally expect them to win 6 games and qualify for a bowl game. There is more talent on the Gophers than most people understand. Brewster's recruiting is finally going to start paying off for Gopher fans.

The players have to be thinking "here we go again learning another new system." One positive is that most of them are used to it!!

Not only will we be running a new offensive sytem but also will have an inexperienced QB, potentially a very young and green OL and questions at WR. We could struggle on offense.

If the young guys returning on the D develop with the new conditioning program and Beal is as good as advertised, we will improve on D. A healthy Rallis and Royston will give us much needed experience. I hope Jacobs ends up at DT as I can see him being a force. I think the DL/LB's will enjoy Claeys system. Said that, I hope the D can keep the games within reach. And Gray and the offense will show gradual improvement and manage execute the basics and sneak up on a few in the 4th quarter.

I think 6 wins will be a stretch.

Not according to Coach Kill himself who said this team had no speed, defensive backs are frail, and disappointed in their conditioning. I will not expect to much this year.

Right on! The only point I have been trying to make is the way Jerry Kill has been going about his business is quite different than way Mason and Brewster did. He has his work out for him but he knows what he is doing. That alone is enough of a reason to celebrate. Watching Mason and Brewster not always knowing what they were doing could be quite painful at times.

Maybe so, but I don't think you or I am in the place to read into what he says with any level of accuracy. Therefore, I will take what he says literally until he proves to not be a straight shooter like the last guy. I tend to agree with him that this teams has little to no talent based on previous performances.
 

Perhaps Jerry Kill 's "poor boying it" right now. In other words, he's downplaying the talent he has going into the season. All coaches do this to some extent--especially first year coaches. Most coaches also approach the media build-up to each game by saying that their opponents are so strong that they're weak little teams probably shouldn't even show up.

It's hard for me to believe Kill thinks he inherited absolutely no talent at Minnesota, as some on this thread have implied or said outright. Kill has said his FIRST impression based on ONE or TWO workouts is that his team lacks speed and strength. He's also said his thin at some positions, especially in the defensive backfield. That's a long way from saying he has no talent at all with which to work.
 

I agree with the OP.
In his first year, I'll be measuring him against Mason's 1st year (3-9/1-7) and Brewster's 1st year (1-11/0-8). My expectation is that he will do better than either of our former coaches in their 1st year.

I am amazed at some people's lack of ability to realize that all good coaches say things that they realize isn't necessarily true. Even though Jerry Kill is a man of integrity you shouldn’t take what he says as “The Truth”.

If you want to understand Jerry Kill you better realize that everything Jerry says has a purpose but you need to look beyond the words. Great coaches are great psychologists. There is a line in the movie Patton where his aid says to him "Sir, they don't know that you don't mean that." "You need to tell them that." Patten then says something to the effect "It is only important that we know that".

Part of the reason Jerry Kill may have said these things is that trying to establish an identity for what he wants this football team to be. These statements are just part of him establishing his culture.

Bootcamp before combat

Jerry Kill is putting the team through bootcamp right now. Condition and train the body. If his S&C coach thinks the team is weak in areas, Coach Kill is then motivated to get the team in shape. I don't think the team is that far from being in the condition the coach wants them. He is merely pointing out the direction he wants them to be focused on. I think the team is responding well to coach Kill.

Did you ever notice who closely Coach looks like Goldy!
 

It's quite possible that there is more talent on this time than the record indicated, it remains to be seen how much was coaching and how much was talent. But being disappointed if we don't win 5 games in 2011 doesn't seem reasonable.

When will highwayman post a comment that actually has something to do with a Minnesota player, coach, opponent or anything related to the nuts and bolts of Gopher football? Or is he just a troll, trolling for trolls? Who needs that on a message board?
