Give Jerry Kill a break..

This is not going to be anywhere near the major building job that faced Brewster when he took over from Mason. It should be a disappointment to Gopher fans if they don't win at least 5 games this year. I personally expect them to win 6 games and qualify for a bowl game. There is more talent on the Gophers than most people understand. Brewster's recruiting is finally going to start paying off for Gopher fans.

That might be true, but doesn't it scare you HOW Brewster went about his recruiting?

The man recruited for a different style of offense all four and 1/2 years on campus. Think about it, Gray was recruited to run the Dunbar Spread offense. That means almost everyone that year was suppose to run the spread. Does that equal a year of wasted recruiting? Probably not, but the players are suited better for an offense we no longer run.

Next year a pro-style took over and Brewster recruited for that. Most recently, a power run offense was the goal. Perhaps Kill will be able to place his players in better positions. I believe he has told some players to look elsewhere to play because they won't fit his system.

so how does this translate to the defensive side of the ball.... I never hear about that. Did Brewster recruit for different defensive schemes every year too? How will the current defensive players fit into this new scheme?

Too funny. One coach left a bowl team behind with an identity. The other left a horrific mess. I for one will not be giving Brewster any credit with what Kill does with his players. Let Kill stand on his own. Either he shapes the team into a group that can compete with their peers or he doesn't.

I think that there is talent on this team, some high end talent. I don't think that Brew would have ever been able to utilize it well, but I am optimistic about Kill's ability to harness the talent. What I am most excited about is that I do not see us getting out schemed, out worked, and out disciplined by inferior (talent wise) opponents anymore.

I think we will be 7-5 next year, but I will probably move that number up as we get closer and my marooned colored glasses come more into focus.

You can have all the identity you want. It's meaningless if you don't leave very many players.

You credit Mason for leaving behind an "identity", yet you won't credit Brewster for recruiting nearly all of the players that Kill will field this fall. So which is it? You can't have it both ways.

Kill is currently cleaning up a little mess as to academic standards with a few of Brew's recruits. Apparently those players didn't "get it" as to why they are in school in the first place.

It's quite possible that there is more talent on this time than the record indicated, it remains to be seen how much was coaching and how much was talent. But being disappointed if we don't win 5 games in 2011 doesn't seem reasonable.
All we've heard for the past four years is why we shouldn't have expectations or hold the staff accountable. Are we already starting that with Kill, too? Expecting bowl eligibility or whatever would be a stretch, but not even 5 games?

When will highwayman post a comment that actually has something to do with a Minnesota player, coach, opponent or anything related to the nuts and bolts of Gopher football? Or is he just a troll, trolling for trolls? Who needs that on a message board?

Jeebus...if you want to instigate a pissing match at least keep it confined to the thread that got you PO'd in the first place.

I'm not saying we won't win 5 games. But it isn't time for pitchforks and torches if the Gophers only win 4 games. If getting to 6 wins and bowl elligibility is a stretch, then why is 4 games so unthinkable?

if they only win 3 games next year probably more a reflection on the actual talent that is here than the new coaching staff.

if they win 6 games next year probably a good indication what many what to believe that Brewster did recruit ok but the new caoching staff did a better job coaching them.

IMO the win total will be more towards the 3 win side than the 6 win side but this head coach has a system and a staff that after a few months on the job puts it in a far better position to get to 6 wins in the first year than the previous regime.

Good question.

My answers would be:

first off, I think its obvious that Brewster cut some corners in recruiting defense to begin with. His defenses were never any good.

Second, it seems to me that in college on defense schemes don't seem to matter. How many different draft prospects this year are listed as OLB/DE or DT/DE?

In college these prospects are finding their position on defense and seem to be interchangeable until they find their true position.

Minnesota's defense in 2009 was better than any Mason ever had and was pretty darned good. It would have been excellent if Brewster had not installed a completely new offense which forced the defense to stay on the field all of the time.

Expressing disappointment if the Gophers don't win 5 games is not the same as saying that it will be time for pitchforks and torches if they win fewer games. Every Division I college football coach needs a mininum of four years to make the progam totally their own. I will give Coach Kill at least that long before I take to the streets with my pitchfork. Assuming his health doesn't become a problem, I fully expect that Kill will be coaching the Gophers ten years from now, and probably much longer.

I am wondering, why is 6 wins such a stretch?

If the Gophers go 3-1 in OOC games (wins vs Miami, NDSU, & NMSU) and 3-5 in conference (one game better than 2010), that is 6 wins.

Man you know what? Expectations that's how it needs to be. We Gophers, son that's how it goes down. Kill come over to a prime bcs conference and ain't set up to be knocked off. My cuz didn come up to freeze and win nuttin, Thats how it is, thats life, thats this U.

Six wins son. E-Z.

Quotin dis.

Having come into this earth in the year 19 and 79, I have no expectations for this team or any coach. All that can be said is at least Kill does not project himself as a jackass and that is a measurement that might not appear in the old W/L column, but ought to be worth something nonetheless. Lose, but lose with your mouth shut.

Man how you gonna start raggin on someone like that huh? you dont know coach Kill. Oh you think Coach Kill like some kinda punk? Coach Kill is hardcore, son. He lays it down like it aoutta be laid down. Whereever we go, whatever we do, everyone gonna know about this U.

People need to realize that it will take some time to implement another new offensive and defensive scheme with this team. It will not happen overnight. I admit I was a skeptic when Kill was hired, but am now somewhat optimistic that his system and approach may work here. The most accurate thing that Coach Kill has said is that the focus must be on getting better every day(Brewster had a similar quote which was getting better each and every day). I won't judge Kill's first team on wins and losses as much as if this team is playing better football at the end of next season.

His system will work--to what extent, we won't know. I'd say we will get a good idea from October 1 to November 12:

Sat, Oct 01 Michigan * at Ann Arbor, Mich. TBA

Sat, Oct 08 Purdue * at West Lafayette, Ind. TBA

Sat, Oct 22 Nebraska * TCF Bank Stadium TBA

Sat, Oct 29 Iowa * TCF Bank Stadium TBA

Sat, Nov 05 Michigan State * at East Lansing, Mich. TBA

Sat, Nov 12 Wisconsin * TCF Bank Stadium TBA

How happy would you be at 2-4 or 3-3 in Big Ten at that point. It's not as crazy a leap as it seems. I'm just sayin'.

To compare Kill to Brewster on quotes alone is ridiculous. Not saying you're doing that. I have judged Kill so far on his organization skills versus the chaos of the last 4 years. That alone has shown me how a "big time" propgram works.

By the way, when I saw "sceptic" (skeptic), I thought I saw "I admit I was septic..." It made me laugh because I thought it was a great expression of disgust!:)

Lemme tell you how this is gon go down k?

I imagined Jerry Kill's cousin to have more of a Kansas dialect.
