Oregon Dan Lanning: Koi is "football serious."

I don't know why people are talking about Koi so much. I didn’t see him make a single tackle in the Gopher spring game this year. I think he needs to work on his tackling.
So you don't know why people are talking about Koi while in the very same post commenting on an aspect of his playing ability.

Maybe you answered your own question.

Honestly I think getting every opportunity last year in all 3 phases and having just an okay year (IMO) likely was a wake up call for him.

There is going to be less pressure, more money, more winning at Oregon. Maybe he thinks not being a big name will help him get better and he know he has to get better? That’s my hope for him.
Even if it was the same money, I think I'd rather go to Oregon with a legit shot at the natty before declaring for the draft, getting paid to come plug-in and be the new Theinaman this year, as opposed to expectations of being all-world putting the Gophers entire team on your back. Theinaman first round, we'll be seeing him 2x per year here now

Just wait til we see Koi 17 (maybe 18+) times a year and he becomes beloved in Minnesota again! He really hasn’t been shy about his true goals in life and football. Talk about a 360 for a guy/family!

Koi goes from the most loved player to being hated on in the span of 8 months here. Lol.

I'll bet he has a very good season in Oregon, and I'm happy we had him for two years.
Agreed- If Danny Collins is as bad of a DC as everyone on this god forsaken website suggests, then this was obviously a very good move by Koi for both his near and long term future.

So you are assuming if Perich becomes a Viking, the utter lack of Playoff success will continue.

Bummer.

...but please, feel free to share again...

Looks like they got him on a new “””training””” regimen.

He was good as a freshman and DC Hetherman left to get Miami into the National Championship.
I'd say coaching was a contributor to the decline in performance of Koi and our defense.

Koi also wasn't asked to do as much his freshman year. He took a step back when responsibility became greater. Our CBs were awful last year too which also put more pressure on safeties to play responsibly. Koi didn't adjust very well to that.

Here's a ridiculously deep dive into Koi's 2 years of "performance" at Minnesota from SB Nation at Addicted to Quack. While the focus is on Koi, it is actually a major indictment of Coach Collins approach and how Koi was used last year. From this take, Koi's "dropoff" on the defensive side of the ball that certainly this GHer lamented was almost entirely situational as some others opined.

This does not address using him on offense or as a returner, but he probably was not happy with the shift from Heatherman to Collins at the helm that showed up on the field.

Again, WARNING, do not click this if you have no further interest in Perich as a Duck. That offered, some interesting takes for those deep into the Xs and Os of football. The HC might take note of some of this too.

I think some of that 8 months was not without reason. Even before that if you asked fans they had valid criticisms.

I get the guy changes team and fans change their tune idea, happens everywhere, but that's not all anyone has had to say about his play.... and young guys with even flaws get a lot of grace from fans.

The biggest thing I got out of that is that they bet on Koi to be able to handle a different role (and stuck with it, perhaps due to being no apparent better option and wanting to not change base defense to accommodate) and Koi didn't handle it as well as they assumed he would. Perhaps a case of overestimating what Koi could do.

Our lack of quality CBs was a huge issue for us last year. However I think if our defense performs similarly to last year Collins will be out, maybe even before the season is over. We do have a former OKST defensive coordinator on staff in case of emergency.

Both our coordinators are green and haven’t shown much. The defense last year was actually ranked in the middle of the pack. The offense in the last four years rankings have been awful last year I believe we’re 130th in yards per game and 115th in points per game. That’s about where we’ve been under our current OC. As I’ve said before, if either of our OC or DC were out there and said they would coach another P4 team for free I don’t think there would be any takers.

No kidding! I can't imagine the time it took to write that. I'll give the author credit though, it's far better than most of the articles just pumped out nowadays.
That really is a DEEP dive. I like the one and only comment on it. Saying playing a really good saftey at saftey is better than playing a really good saftey at linebacker. I wish I read that first it would have saved me 45 minutes.

It's certainly possible that Heatherman always intended to use Minnesota as a stepping stop to be a DC at program with legitimate chances at a natty. (And Miami certainly fit the bill there.)

You'd hope he'd stay here more than one year, but circumstances were what they were and Miami came calling. Maybe he never had any interest in staying here more than two years tops, who knows.

But multiple things can be true and factors can more more than 0% true and not the main reason but still a non-zero contributing reason.

I choose to believe that Fleck biffed it. Not unlike other coordinator decisions.

I'm sure Fleck would dodge it by saying something like "Corey had other ambitions and we were grateful for the time and effort he gave to Gopher football".

Could have tried harder to keep him. Could have offered more money.

But the worst thing Fleck did by far was promote Collins and think he could call games and strategize as well as Heatherman.

Such a downgrade
